Just a quick note: I would not recommend Rat Manor cage, while it is affordable the mesh coming together at the corners can trap rats fingers. We had to amputate a finger of one of our boys because his finger stuck and snapped when he tried to jump down :( please be aware

There's a bittersweetness to knowing that my exuberant little troublemakers will likely mellow out as they get older. On the one hand, I may eventually be able to just hang out with them somewhere other than their cage or their playroom. On the other, I'll know they're mellowing out because they're getting old, and knowing how short a time they're with us can be such a curse.

When my first pet died, I was told "Hellos are simple but goodbyes are complicated." . Once you say hello to something or someone, you'll always have to say goodbye. The good news is, there are plenty of other animals that can benefit from the love and experience that a humans lifespan can attain. So much opportunity for new, precious memories. "The story of life is quicker than the blink of an eye, the story of love is hello, goodbye."

@@Melaniefann18282 or more is usually recommended, so as long as you have at least a pair, you're good. I will say, though, that you should keep in mind if 1 were to pass away suddenly, the other would be alone until you got another or until it passes away as well. I believe that's why many people get trios as it ensures that they always have a buddy if something were to happen to one of them or if one needs overnight vet care for some reason, etc.

Never in my life did I ever even think about owning a pet rat. Then 3 weeks ago I had to go to a pet shop near me as my bro wanted to look at snakes.... I was drawn to the rats straight away. I went up 4 times in a week and done my research. Got two boys and I swear I couldn't be happier. The perfect pet in so many ways. Love that I've found these videos to help me. Love my furr babies. Might add another couple in as I've a large cage with plenty of toys

I adopted a female rat (2 y) who lived her entire life alone and in a really small cage... I upgraded her cage (she loved it) and tried to put other rats with her. I introduced them, they were all fine... but as time passed by, she started to get really nervous and angry at everything... then, every time one of the rats would come to groom her, she would scream.. I separated them and now she came back to being sweet and adorable... I think she just doesn’t like being around other rats...

Had a rat just like that. Absolutely hated other rats and was perfectly content with being on his own and preffered just being with humans. He had grown up with his rwt siblings as a baby and I had a cage mate for gim but no matter what I tried he would also fight and hurt the other so eventually I just kept him alone. Algernon was a really weird fella

Some thirty years ago when I didn't know better I had a sweet rat girl without any rat companions. I'm not happy about it thinking back about the time she spent alone, but obviously she became very loving towards me and my mom who would also dote on her, so I think you can in at least some way compensate with your human companionship for a solo rat. Still, I wouldn't for instance have her sleep in my bed next to me so that would be many hours each day she would spend isolated. Otherwise if you could always keep your rat next to you I think they would be fine with having human companions instead of other rats, or even as I've seen in real life stories about rats bonding with other species such as cats or dogs (!)

In regards to clipping my rats nails, sometimes I let them crawl around under my shirt and when their nail points stick through the fabric, I give it a lil clip so they aren't as scratchy. Its not fool proof but its less stressful on both me and the rats and I don't worry about taking off too much as their whole nails don't stick through.

we had our rats in an open terrarium. They could get out whenever they wanted - and except for putting dirt into their bowl and extra save sleeping house, they roamed our house freely. Cables were not a problem. They had plenty of things to chew and we made sure they had plenty of minerals in their food. One of them loved to climb into one of my sisters beds at night and sleep on her chest. This one also loved to climb bookshelfs and stores. The others prefered to dig into our biggest flower pot or jumping on you when sleeping and shoving their noses into your nostrils or ears and start making noises. It was also nice when you watched a film late at night and one of them (or all of them) climbed up on you and then just lay on a hand or your lap, watching tv with you while being gently stroked (usually they fell asleep quickly).

On that note, I’d love some tips on getting the new babies to be excited to play with me and my hands! He’s currently choosing to crawl all over me and he’s less afraid of hands, but i see yours actually playing with your hands like another rat and I’d love to have them that attached to me. I have them out with me in my bed (my smell) as much as possible, hoping that’s enough to make them more comfortable. Also, Napoleon is very interested in nibbling my hair. Is it safe, or how should I train him away from that? They’re only babies, Napoleon maybe 4-6 weeks old and Malachi is much bigger so I’m guessing closer to 8 weeks. We weren’t provided a birthday:(

If you let you rats free range in a bedroom or other large area that has a lot of hiding places it is a good idea to sound train your rat to either a clicker or another noise call. With my rats I had as a teenager were trained to come running when I clicked my tongue. It made it so much easier to find them when it was bedtime. Rats are very smart and are very treat motivated!

I love this video! Especially, the vet part. I rely on ratguide so much and always bring videos and close up pick to the vet which is so useful as well as their weight over weeks. Rats and kids are the same when you go to doctors, they are so sick at home but bounce happily as if nothing was wrong at dr. You and your vet should be a team, vet job is really hard as he has a patient who can't speak and will hide it's symptoms so it is up to the owner to provide the medical history which is extremely important for a correct diagnoses!

Lolol She also wasn't litter trained so her nasty smelling poop was all over. I've adopted rats many times and they always seem to understand the flowand use the litter boxes as they see their new friends doing. But this new rat...lol she was so scared, pobrecita. She was kept alone for idk how long but she was not happy to meet my rats. Usually, the new rat had been kept alone for a whilebut remembers and misses their friends and immediately bond. This new rat was just so scared of my other rats for 2 days. Day 3 they were okay, Today, day 4, they are play fighting and grooming. Rats area so resilient. I love them

If the ones being dominated are especially small or timid, you need to consider actively separating them and slowly reintroducing. Something that is not explored in most 'introduction' videos is that if you, the human, are present during their interactions, they will not fight each other nearly as much. By present, I do not mean you are outside of the cage looking in, but that you are actually with them (or they are with you) and they feel your presence (can be your hand in the cage). They respond to other species by being more tame usually. In the end, dominant rats will be dominant but unlike most species, they don't mean to hurt, they only mean to say 'this is my patch of land'. What you can do is use food on the fur of the submissive rats and other such techniques to incentivise them to befriend each other but know that rats are extremely intelligent (especially dominant ones), and if they notice that when they fight that you interact more with them or that you cover the submissive ones in food, they will actually get more aggressive intentionally when you're around (to get the reward) so it's a complex thing to explain. Ultimately, if the dominant one is too much of a brute, separation can help where one by one you let the others spend time with him (or her, but if it's that bad it's usually a him). Notice who he gets along with and who he doesn't, then focus hard on increasing the interactions with those he dislikes a few hours every day. The loneliness will make him want to be nicer to the other over time, he will learn that he stays alone if he fights.

As the other person said, dominance squabbles are totally normal in rats! You shouldn’t separate them unless you see injuries/blood, and let them sort out their differences x

I’ve had a single rat for awhile now, he came from a breeder and was supposed to be snake food but my snake wasn’t interested and I fell in love with the baby rat so I kept him, I know he should have a mate but i don’t know if it’s a good idea since he’s been alone for so long, I used to be scared of him but ever since I started watching your videos I’ve been showing him more trust and realized he’s more scared of me then I am of him and he’s started to trust me back but is still too scared to let me hold him so i let him run around in my bathroom with cat toys and food and I play relaxing music for rats on my speaker and I noticed he’s more interested in me when he’s out of the cage

I'm only watching this cause I'm trying to refresh my memory but dang syring training is important guys. My poor rat, when I first got her, was already sick and the vet told me to hold her an awkward way (up against my chest) and she hated it SO MUCH she refused to use it. I have to measure it and put it on my finger or on a treat now if she ever gets sick again :(

Very helpful video, thank you! :) Just a random note for 17:49, you can actually use antibiotics against mycoplasma species, its just one that doesnt target the cell wall, for example tetracyclines like doxycycline. :)

You're amazing thank you so much for posting videos like this, the first rats I got were around nine months old and not super friendly so a little hard to tame down but your videos gave me a lot of good advice - im getting some baby rats soon and im excited to use your taming videos, also trying out the bedding you use bc fleece gets gross pretty easily and atleast my old rats would just tear it up instantly

I rewatch this video often when I'm planning for the rats I never thought I would get. I researched them for two years, and yesterday I was finally granted permission as a present. I have very fond memories watching this for the first time, planning off of this video, and finding cute rats I didn't think I would get. I'm re-planning off of this video, and my little rats will be spoiled for life. I'm beyond excited. :D

thank you so much more making videos like this. I bought 2 rats a couple months ago (one male and one female). I didn't really know how to take care of them, besides the changing water, cleaning the cage and bedding, but I really do know more about them now! my cage doesn't contain many toys and is kind of empty so I want to change that and possibly also DIY some toys and sleeping nooks. I'm preparing to start training my rats too. I can't train my dogs to do tricks if my life depended on it, besides what they already know, so I'm going to train my rats 😄 Unfortunately, my two darlings love to trash their cage as soon as I clean the heck out of it -.- They poop and pee everywhere (this is where your potty training method comes in) and they also love to throw their toys, accessories and food all around the cage. It gets annoying because I spend so long cleaning the cage but hopefully training them will give them some manners.

You first statement makes so much sense when I was a little girl we took care of a rat for a friend. It was all by itself, and it did so well but one day it started to get mean. Now I think it was because it had been alone for so long and it just started to feel depressed or irritated and stated to bite. I don’t remember how old he was, but I do know that the biting started not long before he passed. I felt bad for him, but also I learned to be afraid of small rodents from him when started to bite. Your statement has added a lot of clarity to why he started to behave in such a way. It hurts my heart thinking that he lived a lonely life.
