The New Yankee Workshop

Күн бұрын

Norm visits the Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts to see one of the surviving wall clocks built by Shaker craftsman Isaac Young. Norm's version of the clock improves on the past with the use of a quartz timepiece that costs only five dollars. Made from handsome walnut, it is a small, elegant piece that fits into any decor.

I was so inspired by this build when this episode was first released I had to build it. Norm really taught me a lot and gave me the confidence to duplicate his work. I still have it today and that Makita planer that I bought for this build. Norm was very impressionable on my tool buys back in the day. If it was in his shop it was worthy and in mine. 🤣🤣🤣

I know what you mean. I built the same clock out of cherry back in the 1990s. Now up to 30 of these clocks built for friends and relatives. I n my younger days I had the good fortune to have buddy’s with a sawmill and a kiln. All the wild cherry was cut from our farm, milled at one friend’s sawmill, dried it at the other friend’s kiln, and dimensioned the whole lot in my shop. These clocks have made great wedding gifts over the years. I use some of the same cherry stock to built youth sized two-step shaker stools for the children that come along after the wedding! Norm and my grandfather were huge influences on my woodworking hobby. I’m still using old tools from my grandpap’s shop. Cheers! Whipple

I recently finished building a Clock case similar to the clock case being built in this video out of Redwood with a couple of exceptions I avoided the rabbit joint that holds the shelf in place, avoided the rabbits in the side pieces, avoided using Mortis and 10 and joints for the doors, and avoided putting those little windows to see the clockworks

I like tinkering with clock movements, and this is very interesting because it shows the respect that the simple cheap quartz battery movement had in the decades after it came out, today of course everything uses that and the actual spring movement clocks are more desirable. When you find an old clock somebody has upgraded with a quartz movement it's a big disappointment. It'd be interesting to try to use Norm's direction but use a pendulum movement instead, it would fit right in!

I built three of these after watching this show. I kind of cheated and bought square clock faces first, then used the dimensions of those to scale the rest of the clocks rather than order plans. I recorded the episode and kept pausing it to compare my proportions. Mine were a bit smaller and differed in some minor details but came out quite nicely and I still have one today.

For anyone who is planning on building one of these clocks: You can get embossed metal clock faces which won't curl up on you. The way Norm did his where he only put the glue in the corners will cause the paper to warp up in the middle. I rebuilt 2 thrift store clocks with new movements and metal faces and it cost me less than $50 for all the parts. The upgrade was absolutely worth it.

Hey Norm. How do u hide the Brad nail heads after nailing the back board through the side panels?? Those nail heads surely show up on the piece?? Am I wrong for thinking that way? I was wondering if u had to punch the nails in deeper and fill the holes?? If anybody in the comments section can drop me some helpful hints or tips I'd be very grateful to u all. Thanks in advance.. I love the look of this WALNUT for the clock.

20:19 what’s the matter with a 1/8” thick panel? This clock is not going to be under any stress. Coulda resawed the 3/4” stock.

Amazon and Etsy have some. Look for 9 inch clock face sticker. Or just use Google with the same search, lots of clock suppliers.

@@Guysm1l3y "Kids these days" was something you would have heard in 1991, 1981, 1971, 1841, 71 BC, etc. etc. etc. Parents have always scoffed at their kids, and the kids have always rolled their eyes.

There is sound but it's very low. This is one of our early uploads, and we had not adjusted the sound level. You have to turn up the volume. We would re-upload them, but then you lose everyone's comments :(
