This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, released in 2021 and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. This movie is part of Phase 4 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has a great cast, with Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Tony Leung, and Michelle Yeoh being huge highlights for me. I adore the village of Ta Lo. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

They pretty explicitly explained the reference from Iron Man 3 to the Ten Rings, but the first time we were introduced to the Ten Rings was in the very first Iron Man movie that started the whole MCU. The terrorists that kidnapped him were a chapter of the Ten Rings. A lot of people seem to not recall that at this point.

In the comics, before the retcon epidemic, Shang-Chi and Iron Fist first met in Master of Kung Fu Annual #1 in 1976. Danny Rand was looking for a missing Colleen Wing in London, so MI-6 sent him to Shang-Chi (at the time he was working with MI-6) the trail led them to a mirror version of K'un Lun. They next met in the b/w magazine "Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu" #29 in 1977, when they were forced to fight each other. They featured in a storyline through issue #34, the final issue. These stories showed them to be equally skilled martial artists.

I don't know if you recognize him, but the guy on the bus who went live on his phone to "grade" the fight is the same guy who told Spider-Man to "do a flip" in the Homecoming movie. I thought it was cool that they brought him back for a scene. Simple things like that just add to the continuity.

Hey there, just wanted to add a little clarity on Wenwu, its easy as the audience to label him as being so in grief that he becomes delusional, but remember that he lives in a world where he has magic energy rings and his wife had magic powers and was literally born in another dimension, let alone all of the other things in the mcu, and while we in real life see his behaviors and think yes obviously shes dead and his grief blinded him to it, in his world stranger things happen every day and Michelle Yeohs Character does let us know that the dweller really is calling out to him, the voice he is hearing isnt a delusion, its just not really what it seems... so its not so terribly unrealistic that when he hears her that he believes that maybe her soul really is trapped behind some magic gate in her home dimension. Especially since their mother left them the pendants to someday make their way there. So while his methods and the way he goes about it are terrible and unruly, he does deserve a little bit of a pass and some understanding on buying so much into it. Also the second he sees hes wrong he not only protects Shang, but also gives up his immortality by passing the rings on having seen what he has done.

Hi, Kaiielle! Great to see you continuing with the MCU! I've been looking forward to your Phase 4 reactions for a while now, and your viewing of "Shang-Chi" didn't disappoint. Among the many enjoyable aspects of this film, I'm very impressed by the fact that Marvel Studios convinced Tony Leung to take part. From what I've heard, he's a huge star in Hong Kong, but he'd never worked in Hollywood before "Shang-Chi". His involvement is a big deal. I find it fascinating that you might want to explore Shang-Chi's comics first. It's testament to Simu Liu's acting, and the hard work of the writers, that you found his character so interesting. If you read his older stories, though, you'll find his origin a lot different from what you watched here. The character first came about during the era of "yellow peril", so his concept and background had to be re-imagined in a big way to match the proper understanding of Chinese culture. Please don't be too discouraged by what you've heard about the MCU in recent years. I've been enjoying the movies a lot myself, and I'm a long way from giving up on it yet.

I REALLY enjoyed this movie. The visual storytelling, fighting choreography, the CGI, and the fathers conflicted nature and redemption, was so well done. I like that the father was just a one dimensional bad guy. He was "bad" throughout his past and only sought power, which is why they denied him access to Ta Lo. But he genuinely changed when he met their mother. He did go back to his old ways out of grief, but his whole campaign to take over Ta Lo was all based on him being deceived. He wouldn't have done that, had the Dweller in Darkness not manipulated him. His redemption at the end by saving Shang-Chi was really well done. Also, the Great Protector (Dragon) was so well done that it gave me chills on multiple occasions. Its reveal was beautiful and the CGI was incredible. I just really enjoyed this movie all around. I loved the Chinese mythology combined with the fighting and artistic style. I have found that some people didn't really enjoy this movie very much, but I personally found it to be the best, post-endgame movie so far (besides the spiderman movies). I have not had really any interest in any of the other new characters/movies in the MCU, since endgame. Glad you enjoyed it to

Typically in Chinese martial arts, there are two different types: hard styles and soft styles. Wenwu and Shang Chi used a hard style that generally is very linear in its movements, attacks and defensive moves, that also pretty much focuses on using power and strength to overwhelm opponents. His mother and aunt used a soft style that is more circular in their movements, attacks and defensive tactics, that focuses more on redirecting their opponents energy and power away from themselves.

Hey Kaielle. Happy to see you back with the MCU especially with this one. This was an awesome action movie. The fight scenes were dope, especially the bus sequence. The big green monster that Wong fought was Emil Blonsky aka the Abomination (from the Incredible Hulk, whom you met in the 2nd MCU entry). I feel like in the end that Shang Chi was the proper blend of both of his parents’ fighting styles which is what his Auntie Nan was trying to impress upon him.

So a lot of the martial arts inspiration for this movie is drawn from Chinese wuxia movies. One of the first such movies to make it really big with general western audiences was 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' about, uh... 24 years ago now (I feel old, so very old). Michelle Yeoh was one of the stars, and as others have mentioned this would be a great place to start your journey into her back catalogue because it would also help provide a bit of context for the cinematic style and choreography that this film was trying to mimic. If you like the style, there are a ton of other wuxia movies worth checking out like ('Hero' from 2002 is another one that got a lot of traction on this side of the Pacific on the heels of CTHD and holds up very well). This can also start a whole discussion on other martial arts, action, and martial arts action comedy movies coming out of China and Hong Kong (and elsewhere).

I never had a problem with the CGI in this movie, but I was generally pleasantly surprised. I wasn't feeling the promotion of it at all so I went in with rather low expectations, but it blew me away. As far as origin stories go, it's one of the strongest entries in the MCU in my opinion. If I remember correctly, one of the reasons why the CGI is (apparently) a little dodgy in this movie is that this is right when Marvel decided to cram out a ton of movies and shows at the same time. There aren't THAT many special effects studios that can handle those kinds of CGI-heavy gigs so the few that would normally handle them were worked basically to the bones with way more projects than they had previously worked on at the same time. That plus general Covid-related issues (and less oversight of individual projects since there were so many of them) leads to a somewhat unstable period of the MCU going forward. Hopefully we're past it now. Covid is over so those specific problems won't affect new projects going forward, and after a change in leadership a while back, Marvel has decided to scale back a lot and not pump out new projects quite as frantically as they did in the years between this movie and now, basically. However, my main problem with this rough patch is not that projects have been outright "bad" - most are at least perfectly passable. It's more that each movie and show set up a lot of future storylines that are never followed through on. We're still waiting on Shang-Chi 2, for example. In fact, I'd almost advice against watching the post-credit scenes because they are almost never relevant to anything that you're likely to see in the foreseeable future. For me, they've mostly been frustrating. Long gone are the days where they'd tease something that's going to happen in the next movie or the one after that. No, now they tease something that might happen in the next PHASE or the one after that. That being said, I hope you enjoy what's coming despite some flaws. There are still a lot of fun stuff in the future for you. It's just not as consistently great as it was in the previous phases.
@Elliecesa
@Elliecesa 3 ай бұрын
I would like to add to that another reason the CGI starts getting worse from here is that Marvel starts wanting more and more changes afterwards without giving the artists more time. I'm really hoping the VFX workers choose to strike because they deserve way better conditions than this

The ending really missed a golden opportunity. The heart of this film was the father/son dynamic to me. The dragons were McGuffins. So, in my head canon ending, Wen defeats his son and lets out the dweller. Then realizes his wife is gone. But the dweller is killing Shang Chi. Wen gives his life to save his son. But that give Shang Chi and the good dragon enough time to rally and send the dweller back into the void. Then the good dragon sacrifices itself to seal the portal.

It's a lot of good fun and Yeoh does some crazy stunts. Though not her best (it's very early on in her career), also try Yes Madam, with Cynthia Rothrock (the inspiration for Mortal Kombat's Sonya Blade). Hi, Kaiielle! Thank you for the watch. As always... delightful. Thank you. I enjoyed this movie. I guess I was surprised to have enjoyed it as much as I did. But... I think I was still suffering from Infinity Saga fatigue. I love the MCU, and I love how they wove it all together. But, after 20+++ movies... I got burned out. And, I think I'm still suffering from that a bit. But, I'm still watching, and will continue to do so. So, no spoilers going forward. Fear not. At least not from me. As you said, this movie is fresh, and different, and I think sufficiently removed from our current MCU experience that it seems like it's own thing, and I think we're taking it as such. As for the CGI... well... CGI is best used to create things that we are familiar with, but are unlikely to see in real life. When its used to create things that don't exist in real life, already, we have to suspend our disbelief. Sometimes it's easier to do than others. I tell you what... the CGI in the original Jurassic Park was so astoundingly amazing... it still holds up... what? 30 years later? Jeepers! Has it been that long! Wow! Yeah... it was fantastic, but not fantastical, you know? It looked like they got real dinosaurs to harass the actors. At any rate... these days, I take the CGI in stride. If it looks fake, I make a greater effort to suspend my disbelief. I try not to let the impossible hobble my enjoyment of the present extant. It's a tenuous relationship, but it's what it is. If the story is good, if the characters are good, if the action is good... it's good. Well... at any rate, thank you again for the watch. Keep on watching, and I will keep on watching with you. I hope you have a pleasant spring. Take care.

So...pet theory: it never made *any* sense that Fury would have sent Batroc and the mercs to seize the Shield/(Hydra) ship at the start of "Winter soldier", especially to proceed to then send Rogers & Natasha to stop them. My headcanon is instead that the Ten Rings (or another MCU villain organization - don't want to get too specific in case KT reads these comments, not sure how far she is in the Marvel TV content on Patreon) sent Batroc, with Fury using it as an opportunity to have Black Widow gather intel during the rescue.

If you never watched Crouching Tiger-Hidden Dragon you should watch that. It's another Michelle Yeoh movie. There's some fighting elements from that movie they used in this. The rings are not really tied into Doctor Strange. Wong came because he and Strange are the protectors of the Earth from mystical beings so the rings basically alerted them when Shang-Chi used them.

If Ta Lo has an Airbnb, I call dibs. The movie definitely has the right balance of elements that make it one of the MCU’s better small films. I was taken by the kung-fu inspired fighting and blend of mythical creatures and elemental powers. New characters with well-written backstories unconnected to the larger scope of things felt fresh. Trim, good pacing, no time for overly quippy jokes/pointless dialogue, and gives us alot of information efficiently without any exposition dumps. Highly rewatchable.

Holy crap I just realized despite subscribing I fell off on your Marvel reactions even though you're one of my favorites. Yikes. Jumping back in here where I left off and yay it's one of my favorites from Phase 4!! Also pre-movie, nice to see you are doing the Netflix MCU shows... even though they exist outside of the "phases" (technically overlapping with the events from Age of Ultron through just before Infinity War), they are canon and a lot of fun. Especially the first season of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. I hope you're enjoying them). So the Ten Rings ... I wasn't sure when the flag came up if you recognized it from Iron Man 1 and 3 but obviously by the time Trevor pops up you're up to speed. In the comics, the ten rings are actual finger rings, each with a different super power, and they are worn by the Mandarin -- not a man pretending to be the Mandarin like Trevor was in Iron Man 3 but an actual Chinese-nationalist crime lord with the title of "The Mandarin." Also in the comics, The Mandarin and Shang-Chi's father are two different characters. Shang-Chi is a Marvel original but when they started his series, Marvel had the license rights to make comics based on Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu books, so they mad Fu Manchu Shang-Chi's father, and his sister and a few other supporting characters were also from Rohmer's novels. When they lost the license rights, they "revealed" that Fu Manchu was just an alias that Shang-Chi's father was using and renamed him and retired the Caucasian characters from the Rohmer novels. Interestingly, his name in this film is different than his true name in the comics ... probably because Marvel Studios made the decision to combine Shang-Chi's dad and the true Mandarin into one character for the MCU. But back to the "rings" ... after this film the comics actually introduced these arm gauntlet rings from this film as another artifact, and they are now in Shang-Chi's arsenal, in addition to the finger rings of the Mandarin. By the by, if you like this film, the Shang Chi comics from his original 1970s-1980s run are fantastic. It starts as another run-of-the-mill "yellow peril" type story but really quickly course corrects into a James Bond meets kung fu pastiche. One of Marvel's best titles. If you want to hunt them down, they begin in the comic book Special Marvel Edition and continue into the series Master of Kung Fu. Seemed like you didn't recognize Wong's sparring mate as Tim Roth's character, Emil Blonsky/Abomination from the 2008 Incredible Hulk film, making him the third character and second original actor after William Hurt to return from that film. And apparently, yes, that is Tim Roth doing the ADR growls. Take that with a grain of salt. But since Marvel Studios is not allowed to do an direct sequels to the Incredible Hulk, they have to continue those plotlines in non-Hulk films. That's why William Hurt first returns in Civil War and Blonsky here. Also in the fight club I don't know if you noticed in one of the cages was a Black Widow, and she was played here by one of the actresses from the Black Widow film, from the group that Natasha had to un-mind-control. The creatures in Ta Lo are based on actual Chinese mythology. In the comics, Ta Lo didn't originally appear in the Shang-Chi series I mentioned above, that series was fairly down-to-earth. Ta Lo first appeared in the Thor comic series as that series began to deal with the other pantheons of gods beyond the Asgardians. The Dweller-In-Darkness was likewise normally a Thor and Doctor Strange character.

X-Men: I've started this, you can watch two reactions so far if you want. The first has been on the channel for a while now. X2 is on Patreon with the edited version to come. Don't skip the intro for my reaction to X-Men as I discuss what I've already seen in the series and what my plan is. Sam Raimi Spider-Man films: I've mentioned these movies in a number of my reactions at this point. There won't be reactions to them as I've seen them many times. Fantastic Four: seen the 2005 one many times. The 2007 one is one of those "Have I seen it?" movies and honestly isn't a priority. Garfield Spider-Man films: I actually talked about this in the intro of this very video you commented on. I even included a link to the playlist for those reactions. I see that you're subscribed so it might be best to hit that notification bell for my channel. I would also recommend watching my video intro's because I promise that I don't just babble on about nothing!

"Visually beautiful". I'm betting after you edited, you could upgrade it to "visually gorgeous". I've watched it 4 or 5 times and am always awed by the visual wonder this does. After Endgame, every MCU entry has some redeeming qualities and some entries are as strong as the great ones. But as the entries progress, it becomes easier and easier to cast aspersions on the product. Haven't met an entry I hate, but some leave a gigantic hole in you.

Hey, Kaiielle! The One-Shot "All Hail the King" was the bridge between "Iron Man 3" and "Shang-Chi" showing how Trevor came into the real Mandarin's custody. The vlogger on the bus was the same street vendor in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" who exhorted Peter to flip on the rooftop! Wong's sparring partner was Emil Blonsky aka Abomination from "Incredible Hulk" who is taken back to his cell by Wong after the match. Jade Xu reprised her role as a Widow in the undercard room passed by Shang and Katie as they're led to the main event arena. She was last seen pinning Natasha against a pillar in Dreykov's control room during the all-out Widow brawl in "Black Widow"! I highly recommend Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" for more Michelle Yeoh! This was an atrocious adaptation of the "Shang-Chi" comics written by Doug Moench and illustrated by Paul Gulacy which were gritty, sexy, violent and espionage-heavy. The character debuted in the 1970s capitalizing on the kung fu craze generated by the incredible martial artistry of Bruce Lee! In the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of the Sax Rohmer 1930s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu but they changed it in the film to have him be the son of Tony Stark's nemesis in the comics, the Mandarin. The license to use Fu Manchu had long since expired and the Chinese government would have prohibited distribution of the film in the lucrative Asian market due to cultural hypersensitivity about "Yellow Peril" stereotypes. Substituting one of Marvel Comics premiere villains like the Mandarin for Fu Manchu could have worked brilliantly if he had been adapted with fidelity. Instead, both the Mandarin and Shang-Chi are nerfed into a lovelorn widow with sentimental aspirations to reconnect with his prodigal son and a milquetoast slacker suffering from arrested development, respectively. Despite sanitizing and defanging the story, the Chinese government banned the film anyway so Disney compromised Marvel's artistic integrity for nothing! The Ten Rings are the Mandarin's weapons and are a product of Makluan science in the comics, an alien civilization whose beings resemble talking dragons. Hence, the motif of talking dragons in Chinese folklore. Awkwafina's relationship with Shang rings false from the start and is a missed opportunity for much-needed romantic tension. He's attractive and she's awkward. Katie clearly has a crush on Shang but is reluctant to test the boundaries of their friendship for fear of destroying it. He's oblivious to her secret affection because he's grown comfortable with perceiving her as a surrogate sister he didn't abandon. The two talented actors could have played with these elements to great effect. The comics are like a mash-up of Bruce Lee and James Bond! It's a 125-issue run that Quentin Tarantino grew up devouring! There are some pleasing fight sequences but Jackie Chan does it better. Tremendous mega-stars like Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are frustratingly wasted in this dreck! Ben Kingsley reprising Trevor Slattery was painfully unfunny and he should have appeared as a torture victim sadistically kept alive for the temerity of impersonating the Mandarin as a way of demonstrating the ruthlessness and narcissism of the villain. Razorfist and Death Dealer are authentic pulls from the comics. This film was a huge disappointment and completely unrecognizable from the source material. A terrible shame as it could have been as culturally significant to the Asian community as "Black Panther" had been to the African community. I highly recommend the savage and sexy comics which have been collected into four excellent omnibuses but, if you're looking for the film's silly story, it exists only in the MCU.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention: if you didn't watch it before, I can recommend the Marvel One Shot "All Hail the King". Marvel used to do these little short films (maybe 10 minutes or so) where they expanded the stories of their movies in various - often funny - ways. I think they were mainly done to be a little extra something for the blu rays, but they are (or at least All Hail the King is) on Disney+ now. This specific short is about Trevor's time in prison after Iron Man 3, where he's become a bit of a celebrity. The short follows a filmmaker there who's trying to do a documentary about Trevor, with limited success. It bridges the gap (a bit) between where Iron Man 3 left him and where you see him again in Shang-Chi. It's probably less impactful after you've actually seen where he ends up but it's still a fun watch.

I think the MCU after Endgame is just less consistent in how every movie and tv series is connected. So you still get some really good movies (hell, I actually quite like Eternals, which many people don't), but it just feels like the story overall being told isn't quite there. Tbh I still have no idea what the overall story past Endgame is even supposed to be. As for Shang Chi, I get the love for this movie. For me personally some things kept it from being top tier MCU. The CGI is one thing, that particularly annoyed me in the otherwise well done fight scenes. On the one hand they have good choreo on the other hand they have a CGI bus and that just takes me out of the experience at times. Also, if you've watched a lot of classic Martial Arts movies (which I have), none of these fight scenes are gonna be looking all that new to you and they certainly won't be more impressive than anything Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, etc. have done. That is just to say that I think this movie tends to be more impressive to Martial Arts movie newbies, which is totally cool. I just happen not to be one, so it didn't catch me as much. I also think they could have given the characters some more space to develop and for the backstory to play out in a lot more detail. Maybe cut a couple of the action sequences or cut them down. There are some deleted scenes for this movie online and I think a couple of them really ought to have been included in the actual film. I also fully support your intention of starting to read some of the comics eventually. Honestly, some of the comic book storylines are a lot better than their MCU counter parts in terms of the story telling.

You don't? Its actually VERY clear. Not going to say it because don't want to spoil anything but its not hidden at all. Even KL mentioned it. Not every show or movie tied into it directly, but the majority do. If you look at the movies that were scheduled, there's no doubt about it. Recent events may have changed future plans though. But all those movies and shows up to this point were headed in that direction.

I see people, who aren't as much into Asian cinema (in particular Martial Arts and Wuxia films) liking this film a lot more and I'm really happy they enjoy it more, even more so if it makes them check out more Asian cinema. I sadly get the feeling though, that it's not the case a lot of the time. As for Shang Chi, I feel like his sister puts it really well in the film: "Did America make you soft?" Ironically that question could be posed to the film itself.

It's a very unique film mixing martial arts with comedy, and while you won't recognize many of the actors, they're all top-tier martial artists from China/Hong King in the last 4 decades.
