In this video we venture out of the Disney Parks and the Pudong area and head into Shanghai City. This was the busiest city I have ever been too and that includes New York! We ended up going to a fake shop which is a must in China and picked up a little something!

Depending on which day you went the busyness and police presence might be because there was a public holiday may 1st to may 5th! A lot of domestic tourism to shanghai happens around that time and police are there to regulate the crowds.

yeah, I don't see that much police presence when I was there. I would say better to avoid May1st, Oct1st, New year and Lunar New Year Holidays.

they had a people stampede a few years back at the bund and a bunch of people died so they have much more police during holidays there now to make sure crowd doesn't get too big.

Omg, I would never go to traveling on the first week of may, it’s public holidays, people are everywhere

On the new year eve of 2014, 310,000 people gathered around the bund to celebrate. An incident triggered a stampede which resulted the death of 31. Since then the government issued strict measures around the area to prevent it from happenning again. The soldiers were there as human fence to regulate crowd flow especially during national holidays as May1. This is why the soldiers were unarmed but police were.

you probably went during the first week of may? it's a national holiday and I believe they brought several navy ships to dock near the bund. the soldiers are more for show than anything since all they do is stand in place for their shifts. also not everyone you think is police is police... many are just security guards for the shopping areas.
