The Shanghai Transrapid Maglev train is the fastest train in the world, reaching an incredible 430 kilometers an hour in regular service. The maglev line opened in 2004 and has been hurtling passengers safely to and from the Pudong International Airport and several metro lines near downtown Shanghai. Unfortunately for the maglev, the Metro line two now serves the airport as well taking many passengers.
There are 2 trains used during regular service with a third spare train. The trains used to change tracks in a pinched loop system, but currently the two trains simply run as a shuttle service never changing tracks all day. Service is every 15 minutes for most of the day. Sadly, just 12 trains a day in each direction run at full speed while the rest run at 'only' 300 km/h. Trains run at 430 km/h from 9am to 10:45am and from 3pm to 3:45pm.
I had a great time riding the maglev trains and walking the length of the track over several days taking video. A few days were incredibly foggy which made for interesting, but limited photo opportunities.
The switches aren't used today in regular operation, except in the morning and night to put the trains away in the depot. I posted a video shot in 2006 showing the switches being operated. • Shanghai Maglev switch

This is undoubtedly THE best video showing the Shanghai Maglev in action. There are plenty of videos showing the ride from the inside but the outside shots really adequately show the speed of this train. My favourite shots are at 1:40 and 4:19. Great job!

Well done, Luke. Definitely an insider's video. Very good outside/unconventional shots, all high-quality, from lots of different angles and distances, demonstrating at least one major feature: the real-world noise characteristics that set the maglev apart from conventional steel-wheel trains. I've always liked vehicle-travelling-overhead shots and sounds, too, so this video is right down my alley. Can't say enough good things about it.

I have ridden that train more times than I can count. I like the knowledge that I'm riding on the fastest train in the world! There are a couple places in the USA that people want to build these Transrapid maglev system. As far as I know, these maglevs are incredible expensive to build, but cheap to maintain and operate, making it the more cost effective option in the long run.

So you would also love the ET3 concept? Putting the maglev in a vacuum tube. Hopefully the USA will get it's maglev in Orlando and that Japan creates a 200+ miles connection between Nagoya and Tokyo. I'm hoping for such a train in Europe. Also good video to point people to who claim that the maglev is just as loud as a regular train. Any idea on power consumption of the thing, I was wondering if covering the top of the track with solar panels (new generation) would attribute to a significant part of the power consumption.

Namsep I remember thinking of the vaccum tube idea, then googling it and realizing I wasn't the first :( Anyways, maybe they should make a clear tube that has low air pressure inside. A vaccum will be dangerous and expensive, and the clear tube lets u see everything flying super fast :D

Theres been rumors that the US is debating on building a high speed rail system that covers the entire united states. It will run from NYC to Miami, then Atlanta to LA. Granted its a rumor and all I have seen is it will be finished by 2050. Yeah....

I didn't get harassed at all. I got some strange looks, but more because I was a Westerner in these tiny communities. I just walk by with my camera in my backpack, and I get a lot of attention. People stare a lot because they probably haven't seen a foreigner walk through their little village or community before. Foreigners usually stay in the big city.

Hey Luke! Do u think the Transrapid as show here could be scaled down for slower Urban Maglev systems or was this designed just for High Speed.
@Luke_Starkenburg
@Luke_Starkenburg 3 жыл бұрын
I think the track is very wide to be used for urban maglevs, but I guess it could be scaled down. There are already urban maglev systems operating in Japan (Linimo Maglev in Nagoya), South Korea (Incheon Airport Maglev), and in China (Changsha Maglev Express and the Beijing Maglev). These maglev systems look similar to the Transrapid maglev. China is building at least 2 more urban maglev systems around the country and is also working on a next generation high speed maglev!

Very interesting. Nicely done. Are there many more passengers in the 430kph periods? There seems to be a train load waiting at the station in one scene but an on-board shot later show an empty train. (May I suggest a split screen for the 300kph vs. 430kph comparison?)
@Luke_Starkenburg
@Luke_Starkenburg 10 жыл бұрын
A split screen would have worked as well. Whenever I film inside a train, I walk to the most empty car because I don't want to invade people's privacy with my camera. I guess this does give a false impression of the ridership. On an average train trip, there were about 80-150 passengers onboard, sometimes many more. This is well under the train's ability, but with a frequency of only 15 minutes, it is good. The Shanghai maglev took a huge hit in ridership when the subway Line 2 connected to the airport a few years back. Passengers who are riding on Line two have the choice to get off the train and transfer to the maglev to the airport (with a new higher fare) or to simply stay in their seat and continue to the airport.

@Luke_Starkenburg
@Luke_Starkenburg 6 жыл бұрын
LeTravailleur when I go, I take the Subway Line 2 (light green) to Chuansha Station. The maglev track is a 24 minute walk from there but I usually hop on a motorcycle taxi to save on walking. The Chuansha Park is also nearby the metro station but in the opposite direction. The park is worth the visit in my opinion and is totally Chinese; no tourists usually go which is awesome!

If you want to catch the train going 430kph, you need to pay specific attention to the timetable. It only goes 430kph during a few hours of the day, some in the morning hours and some in the afternoon. This is quite disappointing to me.

In USA, if we start a project of this magnitude it will take another 20 years to complete. While China and Japan would accomplish the same project in 5 years at maximum. Let me give you an example of speed of development work in New York. Road expansion of 2 miles infront of Laguardia Airport took 6 years. The road from JFK to the city is jam packed every day from morning till evening. The current JFK road expansion took 10 years to complete which is insignificant and the construction was lethargic. Just imagine the level of competence of American administration and their oversight of the development projects.

@Luke_Starkenburg
@Luke_Starkenburg 4 жыл бұрын
Ronaldo Leite the ride is only 8 minutes long so there is no reason to have toilets on the train. I’m sure if they build a maglev train where the ride (including stations) is 1/2 or more the trains will have toilets. I don’t know how long the trains can be, but I hope they can make an 8-12 car train. China is planning on building a Transrapid style maglev train from Shanghai to Ningbo, so if this becomes a reality, your and my questions will be answered. @Luke_Starkenburg
@Luke_Starkenburg 9 жыл бұрын
The switches bend. I'll post a video in a few days showing the switches operate. In the first few years of operation, the trains switched tracks for every run forming a "pinched loop" system. Now, the two trains operating simply stay on their own tracks all day until they are sent to the depot every night. It makes sense to do this, but it certainly makes the operation less interesting.

Stop calling it a train... it’s not on tracks so I don’t class it as a train

It's a cool train but the main thing this reminds me of is how polluted China is.

This is somehow really stupid project ,as you can see the maglev is alway so empty ,people prefer take subway or taxi ,but the government spent a scary number of money on this ,and they probably never get back !

When I am shooting video, I try to go to a less crowded carriage so I can avoid getting people's faces in the video for privacy.

I haven't gone to China, but I know something of the wealth divide. I'm not jealous of 70% of china, they live in poverty.

Yeah, the fact that the fastest train is in Shanghai, it's amazing. China's economic growth is part of what's called "The Asian Miracle". What's not so amazing (or nice) is the huge wealth divide in China. Not all economic growth spurts come with massively growing wealth gaps (e.g Europe after WW2), and the inequality is China ( a "communist" country) is abhorrent.

George Rickard Perhaps you should go to China before you start running your mouth. The simple fact that you think someone lives in the shack at 1:53 shows how ignorant you are. It's time to think for yourself instead of listening to the media.

Despite great poverty in certain areas in China, if you think 1:53 is how most Chinese live you've clearly been misled...

Yes, that's an uninhabited shack. I was using the screenshot to display my point, perhaps misguidedly. The point remains though, the wealth gap in China is large, displayed by the fact that the Shanghai maglev is too expensive for most citizens.
