In this video I tested the effects of having an anchor shank with a sharp leading edge. Two anchor shanks were temporarily modified, one, with the edge sharped, while the other was made more blunt. Holding power tests were conducted back-to-back, with and without the modifications.

Thankyou so much for all your amazing research and presentation style. This is the 1st vid I have found a flaw in your testing. I am a full time liveaboard at anchor sailor. Last 3 new anchors(different boats) were Rocna Vulcan Vulcan. Setting either in soft works too well! They bury themself if given enough time and appropriate scope. EG at 2:1 and a few minutes the flukes are maybe 50% buried. Then 3:1 and a cup of tea later 100% buried. NO Engine used. Then go to 5:1 or greater for the storm after the storm anc has disappeared and retrieval becomes a solid workout just before sail off anc. In these situations both Rocna and Vulcan come up with lots of mud. The anchor will do the setting if you let it.

Late to the party here. Thanks for all the testing videos! I've dived on my anchors lots of times, from southern Massachusetts down to Panama. In New England it is very rare to be able to find any part of the anchor sticking up from the typical thick mud, and sometimes mud-sand. Down in the Chesapeake and the ICW where you are often anchoring in gelatinous goo there is nothing to be seen at all of the anchor. You have to get it to dive down through the goo to something firmer to have any holding at all, but the good is so loose that I doubt sharpness of the shank would make much difference. I could see that a sharp shank could be helpful in thick grass, but it is so problematic that I will do a lot to avoid anchoring in it. In hard packed sand on the other hand, found in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, it is often the case that not much more than the point of the anchor and some of the body are buried. I've successfully (but nervously) hung on an anchor with nothing but an inch or two of the point or points buried, using lots of scope and as much chain as I could. My conclusion for where I've cruised is that sharpness of the point or points is critical, but the shank much less so.

Greetings John, glad to have you around. I have always appreciated your thoughts about anchoring. There was a time when I thought that I might have been able to travel to your part of the world with a bunch of test anchors. With those aspirations now faded, I rely on testimonials such as yours for that kind of information. Cheers, Steve

Thanks@@flygoodwin Of course a genuine CQR kind of proves the point with its incredibly fat, heavy and blunt shank. I have witnessed many a CQR on its side on the bottom, but still doing work with the plow part dug in. In fact, the typical set has a CQR on its side, at least in somewhat firm bottoms. Don't know if you've been there but many Bahamas anchorages are so crystal clear that you can easily observe everyone's anchors just from the dinghy with a glass-bottom bucket or by snorkeling on the surface. Back before we had new-gen anchors with sharp points I found that frequently the best anchor in the Bahamas was a Danforth Hi-Tensile and then the Fortress when they came out. I haven't tried my Mantus there yet, but I'm sure the sharp point would make it much better than my old CQRs.

Thanks for the test Steve. Seems obvious afterwards. Makes you wonder why we didn't see it before. Love the mods to your boat. She looks really nice. We fitted a maxprop to my last boat. You will notice the difference immediately. Low rpm thrust is huge. Reverse thrust difference is even higher. 1 strange anomaly. Before stopping the engine, we had to engage reverse for a few seconds and then finish in neutral. I can't remember why. But we had to.

I bought a Mantus 2 17lb for my Montgomery 17 Which i sail on Lake Erie upon your testing results hopefully Mantus is realizing this! I know you stated your reasoning for a 3.5:1 to 5:1 scope but in a lot of the testing like the Fortress in my experience they only start to work at 5:1 and are a different anchor at 7-10:1 with adequate chain. Anyway I appreciate the time your putting into this project!

@@flygoodwin I’m sure everybody is as impressed as me with the tremendous amount of work that you put into these anchor tests but I just wonder if 4 trials can result in any kind of real significant results given natural variation in the seabed, location of weed, rocks etc etc. A statistician might want 40 trials. Still it gives a good hint at the direction anchor design should take. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy and appreciate your body of work.

The seabeds in which I test produce fairly consistent, "good enough" results from a relatively small numbers of trials. Also, the camera really helps "weed out" (no pun intended) bad tests. But, it is always a "balancing act" between having a larger number of trails and the even more important (in my opinion), large number of test scenarios. For example, in this "leading edge test", if I had focused on the soft mud seabed and conducted 10 trials for each condition (10 x 4 = 40), we would have perfect data for that 1 seabed and zero data for the other 3 seabeds. In my opinion, having "good enough" data from 4 seabeds beats perfect data from 1 seabed. In a perfect world we would have: -Tests of relevant anchor designs (minimum 20) in at least 3 different sizes each. -Test all those with at least 3 different rode combinations with at least 3 different scopes. -Test all of the above with various "soak times" and different rates of pull increase. -Test all of the above with multiple "resets", veers, surges. -Test all of the above in at least 20 different seabeds that are spread around the globe. -And yes, test all of the above with at least 10X trial repetition. So that is 20 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 2 x 20 x 10 = 5,184,000 If I somehow conducted 30 trails per day, for 300 days per year, I would be finished in 576 YEARS!!! Don't forget the video editing and voice work which requires at least as much time as the "on water" testing - so now we are at well over 1,000 years!!! Note that this entire endeavor has been (and will likely remain) a net money loss for me.

I was exploring the Mediterranean on google earth as a place I would like to sail to some day. I noticed that anchoring may be a little sketchy because the bottoms tend to be very rocky. Is there a particular type of anchor that would be good for grappling onto rocks?
@petesweitz2858
@petesweitz2858 Жыл бұрын
I’ve sailed in many locations throughout the Mediterranean and never had a problem finding an anchorage with good holding substrate even with an inferior delta anchor (wasn’t my choice). The biggest problem with anchorages is being overcrowded in the summer months which will keep you on your toes.
