- combat strategy:
the penetrating style, with a pair of small and big forms, teaches to bypass or "penetrate" opponent's guard. its main tactics are:
tactic 13 - "befriend the far, attack the neighbor (远交近攻)": if the opponent puts part of his body openly close to you, it is an easy target, attack it as heavily as possible.
tactic 14 - "borrow a way to attack the city (假道伐虢)": seek an openness or open a way in opponent's guard to attack. as the saying goes, 'hands open doors for the legs.' hands are faster and more accurate, while legs have more power and range and are usually armored with the shoes, which gives them more destructive power. hands open opponent's guard, legs break him.
tactic 15 - "prepare the way in the light, cross the city in the dark (明修栈道, 暗渡陈仓)": when you try to open opponent's guard, he opposes by shifting guard and so leaves other areas open. attack those opened areas.
tactic 16 - "besiege enemy capital to relieve your city (围魏救赵)": when the opponent's guard is engaged, for example, when he wrestles or catches you, the most vulnerable parts of his body (the groins, eyes, fingers, shins, etc.) are left open. instead of opposing his arms-which requires much force and has a low chance of success-attack these sensitive open parts.
these involve bypassing, opening and penetrating moves of the limbs.

- history:
Tang dynasty (618-907):
in the late periods of the dynasty, the tong bi style was formed.
Five dynasties period (907-960):
Han Tong (韩通), a high-rank army general, mastered the tong bi style.
Later Zhou dynasty (951-960):
the last inheritor of the dynasty was a child, and Zhao Kuangyin (赵匡胤), commander of the palace guard, took the throne, and Han Tong was killed by Zhao Kuangyin's army. he was a great martial arts master and Zhao Kuangyin ordered a grand funeral ceremony for him.
Song dynasty (960-1279):
after 961 AD, Zhao Kuangyin, as the first emperor of the new dynasty, commissioned chief monk Fu Ju (福居) to improve and standardize Shaolin kung fu styles. the army generals, along with Zhao Kuangyin's long style (taizu chang quan), introduced Han Tong's penetrating-arm style (tong bi quan) to the temple. this is the 'small tong bi quan'.
Yuan dynasty (1279-1368):
in the late years of the dynasty, monk Jinnaluo (紧那罗) and others combined the small tong bi quan techniques into the base of small and big hong quans and a monkey style and created Shaolin 'big tong bi quan'.
Qing dynasty (1644-1912):
tong bi quan took its final shape during this dynasty.
__________________
- note: there are various other forms and styles named 'tong bi' or 'tong bei quan' in Chinese kung fu, and they are historically and technically different from Shaolin tong bi quan. these are just different styles with similar names.

I really miss Shi De Yang's history lessons on each form. Most of the new videos just jump into the form which is fine but, I usually end up being confused on how the form should done.

So thorough and beautiful to watch... Thanks for mentioning the title, I was wondering also if it was correct...

i've usually seen this form pronounced as "tong bei chuan". This title does present it as "tong bi chuan (quan)". however Shi fu pronounces it "tong bei chuan (quan)". So, yes, i had the same question. "tong bi" is actually two words 通 : tong - can refer to a language classifier of an action; and by itself can mean "connect" or "go through", or "open" (like watching TV - you look 'through' the TV. ) 臂 : bi - only means arm. 通 臂 - tong bi - then properly mean "connecting arm or arm connect" So, if the form is actually called "Through the Arm Fist", then this is correct. That said, I learned the name of the form as "connecting fist" in english, but i learned it was pronouced as "tong *bei* quan" "bei" has an altogether different meaning: 1. 背 bei : referring to "behind the back"; or hiding something behind your back, or 2. 備 bei: meaning "prepare", "get ready" so, "tong bei quan" in those cases, with "tong bei" being separate words can mean: 1. "connect behind the back fist" 2. "prepare to connect fist" However, "tong bei" (同輩) - as one word, means , again, something altogether different different than (通 臂 (tong bi), or 通 背/備 (tong bei)) 同輩 tongbei: essentially means a person of the same generation or "peer". Peer Fist makes no sense, so i'm pretty certain this is not the correct characters or name for this form. All that to say, to answer the question if this is the right title to the form as presented on this post, I'd have to say we'd have to ask someone at the temple the original meaning of the form. As presented here it may or may not be correct depending tong *bi* quan (通臂拳): " through the arms fist" or "connecting arms fist" or as Shifu says it (and as i've learned it's pronounced as well) tong *bei* quan ( 通 背/備 拳): "connect behind the back fist" or even "prepare to connect fist" I can't imagine both are correct - whoever named the form would have only meant one or the other.

@@mikewinburn He has very strong Henan accent, it's not clear, how he actually pronounces it and it's also one of the reasons, why there is a confusion in the first place. There might always have been some generations in the past, where the practices were transferred to illiterates, who didn't know which character was the correct one. Then over time, there might be two or three ways to write one method.

you haven't read the description below the video? it answers everything in detail. more about this: you're mixing two different styles, this is a common mistake even in China, tong bi and tong bei are not related, these are two totally different styles with similar names: - tong bi quan is a Shaolin Zen style, it has army origins; - tong bei has been created centuries later, it has Daoist origin. tong bi here means penetrating arms, read the description to see why it's called this. tong bei means through the back or backward style, its signature move is attacking backwards, you know this kind of move if you've seen those styles. also, sometimes the northern long-fist style is called tong bi, which in this context means full-arm which has the same meaning as long-fist. these tong bei and tong bi's are historically and technically totally different from Shaolin tong bi quan, these are just different styles with similar or the same name.

my opinion is that the performer is DeYang so this form is DaTongBiQuan.. when you will upload a video of LiuZhenHai performing that so you can write Xiao TongBi...exactly how you said before. Inside Shaolin there are a text names Shaolin Encyclopedia with ALL forms illustrated and THIS FORM is DaTongBiQuan. Any attempt to share a different names linked to DeYang means spread confusion. If you show a master performing some form so use that names in HIS lineage. Please. Its simple

that's what the channel used to be a few years before. so, the same form had different names depending on what the instructor called it in the video. this had very bad effects. i noticed that people had gotten really confused over the internet. the small luohan quan is called small in some and big in some other lineages. the same for the big luohan. nobody knew which form is small which is big, and these forms were also called by many other names, which worsened the case even further! every time we had a talk, we had to define which forms exactly we meant, or else, the people would mix up between the names and mistake the forms. that's why i decided to define a unification standard for the channel and for the people who use it. for this purpose, the simplest to understand scheme was based on the sizes of form, not their history or technical contents. however, you have a good point here. as i mentioned, i've decided to, while using these standard names as titles, contain all the various names of forms in their video descriptions, so people know all the names, their reasons, and their relative popularity, and they feel free to use any name they prefer. @@ShaolinKungFuInstructional - very nice way to try to bring clarity to confusion. I've asked many different trainers from the Overseas Shaolin schools here in the NYC area the correct characters for this (and other) form, and discovered that some trainers only spoke the language and could not write the characters. Even one case where the trainer did not read or write, but of course was quite fluent. But, in almost every case, they simply told me, "write it in english as it sounds to you" (it was pronounced, 'tong bei chuan'). So, i myself could not get anyone to definitely formalize the correct character / meaning of most forms. We simply had to learn the name of the form as it sounded and go by it. Unless, as TheFox Master suggests, its actually written down in an Encyclopedia with both the Name and form illustrated at the shaolin temple, I suspect, its original meaning may have been lost in translation. One would think, though, trainers from the temple would have been able to instruct the overseas students correctly regarding the "spelling/meaning" of the form names when teaching these forms. But, it wasn't the case. Too bad for us. But thanks for trying.

this form is a couple of dynasties older than the other tong bi form, so it's called big and the other small in most lineages. however, this form is smaller and the other is bigger in size. this is confusing. to avoid such unnecessary confusions, in this channel all smaller forms are called 'small' and the bigger forms are called 'big', just with respect to their sizes. Let me understand your logic....at the beginning of the video is CLEARLY written DA TONG BI QUAN and the Master that explains the form CLEARLY said that name DA TONG BI QUAN...but...."IN THIS CHANNEL TO AVOID CONFUSION YOU NAME SMALL TONG BI QUAN"? :-))))) i think THAT YOU ARE THE SOURCE OF CONFUSION if you continue to share FALSE INFORMATION!!!
@ShaolinKungFuInstructional
@ShaolinKungFuInstructional 7 жыл бұрын
all shaolin kung fu practitioners should understand that shaolin forms don't have fixed names; every form could have a different name in any different lineages. for example, if you look at the resourses, you see that this form is called by many different names: 'wu hua tui', 'big tong bi quan', 'small tong bi quan', 'tong bi quan form 1', or 'form 2', 'xiyuan da tong bei (not bi) quan form 1', and some other names. no name here is false, each name has either a technical, historical, genealogic, or size justification. if we were going to use all these different names that instructors use, we would end up with a confusing mixture of all these naming reasons and had also to use various names for the same form, which is horribly impossible! altogether, in shaolin styles, naming schemes are a matter of a random freedom of choice. here we use the simplest scheme: the smaller one, 'small', the bigger one 'big'. now, what's your opinion after reading these? thanks and Amituofo! _/\_

i also add that it's a while i've began adding short, yet rather sufficient descriptions for the videos, which contain all the known historical and technical aspects of forms and all their more known names and their connections far as known. that's definitely been always a need. hope it goes well. pin yin is the romanization of chinese characters. As such, there's a correct form for them. i was trying to figure our your meaning as it seems you were trying to "say" the words as you heard them.... but, due to the different tones in chinese, i couldn't figure it out. So, perhaps use google translate. The tool is very close in translating english to characters, and underneath the characters, it also puts the pin yin with the correct tone mark! If you want go a step further, use mdbg. net - This tool is much more exact. And, you can even listen to the characters pronounced correctly after translation. Then, re-post your comment. it'd be great to read what you meant.

LYTHMOHSEN , these forms are not the fighting style or necessarily the application for a fighting technique. They are a series of movements to aid stamina, strength, coordination etc etc then once you’ve have mastered the form your body is ready to fight in that style. And MMA is mixed martial art not just a style. However no ways days it’s all just grapple and ground and pound. If you want to beat the crap out of people bjj and judo are the way to go. But that’s not the point of shaolin Kung fu. And Kung fu literally means to practice something good.

If you don't know what you talking about, just say nothing. MMA is nothing without other martial arts because it is mixed. Without kung fu, no karate and other martial arts. Without other martial arts no MMA. Every style is only as good as the practitioner. If you like only MMA, no need for you to look at these video's. Goodluck

Kung Fu is not about winning it's about to live. There is a big difference between the two. Think about it...the best analogy I can come up is making money vs. not losing money in the stock market. In real society, who has a better change of living a long, healthy life, a MMA fighter or a Kung Fu master? Same reason parents sent their kids to learn Kung Fu, Karate, not MMA.
