For today’s episode, I’m honoured to welcome Master Shi Heng Yi. He belongs to the 35th generation of Shaolin Masters and began practising Kung Fu at the age of four. In the 36 years since, he’s acquired a wealth of knowledge in Chinese martial arts and Zen Buddhism. He’s now headmaster of the Shaolin Temple Europe in Germany, responsible for the physical and mental development of all the students and disciples of the Buddhist Order in Otterberg.
Along with the free videos he posts regularly to KZfaq, Shi Heng Yi has several online training courses via his website, to help teach the basics of the ancient practices he lives by. He wants to bring the wisdom of ‘self-mastery’ to the world in a practical, tangible way - and he does just that in this episode.
This is a wonderful, profound conversation that explores what self-mastery means. While mastering a skill can be taught by others, self-mastery is a personal matter. Our awareness is naturally drawn outwards in life, so we need to cultivate the ability to look inwards.
We discuss some of the ways we can start to do this, from practices of mindfulness and gratitude, to following a structured day. Shi Heng Yi explains what we can learn from the restrictions of temple life, how to identify our attachments and find happiness and freedom within us. Self-mastery, he says, means choosing the middle path of harmony, balance and stability.
We discuss the notion of ‘owning’ ideas and wisdom and discuss the fact that there is no truly original thought. Shi Heng Yi explains that he is not sharing his teachings with the world, only what he has learned and witnessed in life. Everything is infinite so already exists somewhere. Finally, Master Shi Heng Yi explains a beautiful concept - and caution - that our thoughts can shape our destiny.
It really was a privilege for me to have an in-depth discussion with such a knowledgeable, wise and compassionate man. I hope you enjoy listening.

Incredibly true. I'm a psychologist with 11 years of experience working with people from all over the world, and all of this stuff is spot on. It's also been my experience that about 90% of all the problems we have come from being stuck in our faulty childhood and cultural conditioning / programming, which we never consciously chose, and continuing to deceive ourselves about our worth, skills and lovability. Once we stop lying to ourselves and face the hard truths about our lives, we empower and free ourselves from wasting our one and only life completely lost in auto pilot and self-deception

Buddhism rocks and I am enjoying it. I would like to search for Bodhidharma's Indian village. I am a freelance researcher in Bihar in India where the Buddha moved around. I realize the Buddhist world failed to study and recognize Indian Buddhism in India. Buddhism in eastern UP and Bihar in India is alive and kicking. Sir, I have some good news. Day before yesterday I videographed the Vimalakirti's temple which marks the spot where he preached when he was sick, I videographed Kotigama where the Buddha would stay, I videographed Amrapali's property. Sir, she was stinking rich. She was the owner of ten sq km of land which she got through her profession. I videographed the place where her musicians lived, where she lived, where the Buddha's foster mother Maha Prajapati Gautami lived. And to top it all I videographed the exact spot where she attained Parinirvana. Locals pray to her as a village deity and they maintain the place where she died. It is a lovely temple with no statues or pictures of God. There were five tiny stupas on the spot she attained Parinirvana. I will be releasing the videos in my channel in a few days. If I can find Maha Prajapati Gautamies Parinirvana spot, I am confident I can find Bodhidharma of the Shaolin fame.

I appreciate how Dr Chatterjee recognizes how the messaging online are constantly contradicting each other, and people are outsourcing their own inner expertise to other people. I’ve suffered and felt the most lost in life from thinking I’ve found the answer from KZfaq gurus only to realize I’ve stopped hearing myself. Shi Heng Yi is one of the few people I still listen to online.

I'm surprised that people think it would be any other way. We are supposed to have people working in scientific fields that have different theories. I don't know why people expect scientists to all have the same theories. That would be odd. Pretty sure by default scientists/researchers SHOULD contradict eachother. Far too many variables in humans to just buy into one theory.

This was just extraordinary. Thanks so much for this. I have a little mantra that has been a reset button for me on my journey. When something bugs me at work and I find my thoughts shifting to the monkey mind of judgment and blame I say to my self, "I change my thoughts and I change my actions. I am building myself a better life." Since I also do parts work, IFS, I sometimes say we instead of I depending on the situation.

Oh my how true is the statement, "It's action that can start a change". I have struggled a lot since my illness of bacterial meningitis and the death of my Mum. Had a melt down and left my job as a result. I've watched many pod casts by Dr Chatterjee and Master Shi Heng Li. Started reading books by Gabor Mate. Gone to therapy and took up a Martial Art. Wow! I've just had the best week I have had in many months. Something switched inside my mind and I feel much better for making a few changes. I feel so good I've gone back to work on less hours to give myself a better balance. I love this conversation, thank you ❤

So lovely seeing Shi Heng Yi here. On the subject of habit, there seems to be something else going on. It may be simply when a habit is formed: as a child, habits have the chance to stick more readily, like brushing teeth. It may also be whether the action has a neutral psychological quality or history. The point is, some habits take little effort and some, no matter how long I've been doing it or how virtuous/non-virtuous, just drop. After months of yoga, breath work, and meditation, I woke up one day and shrugged my shoulders. After years of smoking (20) I also woke one day, took 3 puffs and never smoked again. 🤷‍♀🤔🙄

That's great right moment & time for you to give up smoking. You did it yourself...no one can make anyone give up smoking I know first hand "I wish it had been that easy for my Husband" addictions are the pits Smoking should have been banned in 70's & they should have blown up smoke industry when really starting to know dangers it's legalised so easy to get is so addictive easy to get hooked. I take off my hat to you as takes lot of strengths they liken it to giving up cocaine. I think giving up smoking or any addictions is huge best thing can do for self. Best wishes.

Structure and organization, even if that means restriction, are vital to figuring out your life's direction. I've found that making small, enjoyable, attainable goals and working towards them daily work best. There is great satisfaction found in such creativity. And THEN you can raise the bar if you want. I like the set meal times. You sit down and savor the food. You are grateful for it. Indeed, gratitude resonates much higher than even love. It's where the universe blesses us time and time again.

25:57 Yes, I agree... too many choices today... becoming stagnant because we can't CHOOSE. Very good point and found myself there, overwhelmed, confused, frustrated...but made the decision...NO MORE.... I unsubscribed from all the different websites I'd been connected to, trying to figure myself and my life out. Now... I only listen, for now... do Dr. Chatt's vids...and by slowly learning, absorbing, acknowledging, identifying, I then try to incorporate what I learn into positive change in my life. I will not be bombarded anymore by "so many choices" -it's crazy out there. Enough to make a person mad, I say. I'm choosing one thing...one thing at a time and try to do that well, for a bit and see... observe, watch how I progress, how I feel. One thing to focus on and commit to, for now. Otherwise, it's like trying to do 10 things well and ya don't get not one of 'em right! Thank you so much Dr. Chattergee - I see you are humble enough to learn as well. Bless your heart and keep up this awesome work. I appreciate you and all your efforts in offering such wonderful interviews to the public. YOU, are helping people!

At 15:00 i think i know amd he just said it , i just finnished 2x 10 sessions of silience and my second session my mind took off but like 25 years ago in a room while meditation was on and i could not do it that day because of thought, so they told me to concentrate on breeding when it happens amd suddenly , i was there in peace and this went on for 15 to 20 min of silence. So to uncondition and recondition is the key. But more so to keep breathing with discipline and let the mind become easy within itself. How else can it be done? Let the scenarios happen and use a bit of your ego to intimidate itself and it suddenly leaves you alone, so .......awarness is also the key on the progression of stillness.

It always amazed me that how can any spiritual leader neglect their body. I wouldn’t know what I know without the physical aspect. The physical aspect is what will promote the evolution in the longevity of our limited life. Part of the job is to extend this limit and guide others to not limit theirselves.

I feel we don't possess the comprehension as to how absolutely unique we actually are right this very moment, but because we want to know we restrict our abilities & then we build our civilizations within this boundary, maybe its conditioning, but it's almost like our development is obsolete by the time it's constructed, now if meditation is carried out then we get more knowledge of what's going on & why I think it should absolutely be part of the educational curriculum. June 22nd, World Peace day, let's chill relax & take in what this Universe advices ❤

But due to tendon, ligament, and collagen issues, my feet never sufficiently strengthened, and I began to have severe hip pain and knee pain due to my feet turning inward. If you have fallen arches, bunions, or any other foot issue, be it structural, organic, or due to injury, wear what your podiatrist prescribes. Or find what makes your feet and hips feel better, because believe me, if you don't, your whole musculo skeletal system will eventually suffer, and that is disastrous. Sometimes, devices like orthotics need to take over the load. Don't feel guilty about that.

Old habit must be replaced mindfully with healthier habits, schedule in the evening for the next day, split day in segments. Every day do the best you can with what you got and remember that no one is perfect but we can be 0,1% better every day. Being more focused on what we have instead complaining what we do not have helps a lot! In the long term you have better life and better Planet 🍀♥🙏🌱

People are programmed robot slaves of the system thinking happyness starts with extern factors like status, money, material things that means nothing and its relativ and an illusion create by society. If your happyness depend on extern factors you will never be because extern factors are endless. Happyness starts inside you. The more people around you, the more expectations, talk about others, lying, frustrations, negativity, jealousy, double standards, violent, sneakyness, own benefits, judge, comparing, double standards etc.... reflection of their broken souls. Alone or in solitude you have more strength, peace, power, happyness, freedom and time. Be the light in your life. And no, not feel better or superior but more be carefully and awake
