First let me thank the first several of you who corrected me on the transparency charts on the tubes vs box although I am. Still not sure on that because even the dark colors can either be like the box or opposite of it. So I am still trying to find out for sure.
Arteza asked me to review their set of 60 tubes of gouache. I did receive them for free but they are aware that I do honest reviews. I told them I had already reviewed the 24 set but they sent it out anyway. So I thought why not do a comparison by painting the same thing twice using Arteza Gouache on one and professional artists gouache on the other. The professional gouache used was M. Graham and Winsor and Newton.
Discount code for Arteza Gouache; I am waiting on Arteza to send this to me. I will post it here.

That was a great review :) I have the Arteza gouache myself, I only use it to paint in my sketchbook, so it seems ridiculous to buy decent gouache for that. I love it because it's cheap and it makes me not afraid to mess around with it. :) When buying expensive paints I always feel like the end result should be excellent or it would have been a waste of paint and therefore money. With these paints I don't care if it turns out awful, as long as I had fun! 😁

I love the identical paintings side-by-side as a way of doing a comparative review, Sharon. I don't think I've ever seen this method before - but it's very effective. Definitely agree with you regarding the redundant colours for landscape painters and I'll be happily sticking with my 24 colour selection - but, as you say, for 'crafters' this could be a very good buy. As regards the final paintings, to be honest I think I instinctively preferred the Arteza with their brighter yellow-green colour - but, as you say, the other version probably more faithfully reflects the true colours of nature (although I did think they perhaps looked ever so slightly chalky compared with the Arteza). There's definitely something for everyone in today's painting market, though, and videos such as yours really do assist in bringing the range to everyone's attention and helping us form our own ideas as to which products will best match our own individual needs. Thanks so much for this video and, of course, for all the others you've produced for us over the years. Oh, and I nearly forgot - great performance by Diesel in Act l of the play :-) it's always good to see/hear the little fellow putting in a guest appearance. All the best, Brian.

Thanks Brian. Ya know I believe the white made it come across chalky in the professional gouache. I think it was the camera. But maybe not. From my eyes I thought they were very similar and I agree, I kinda preferred the yellower one also!

It's a very personal thing. I feel like the Jeece's fine art is more buttery and professional. But all I can do is give my own opinion. I'm glad you found one that works for you. That's the important thing. I need to start stating this at the beginning of these videos. I have had people go off on me when I said I didn't like certain watercolor brands. This is a very thorough, extensive review. I think it’s a very balance view to and mimics what I have found. They are enjoyable, fun and great for no worry painting. I do agree that the 24 set is more than enough colours. I think is going to be a fair assessment that they will not compare to the professional brands, but they are certainly better than the Reeves gouache or the other hobby/craft brands. Things have been pretty tough here. My Hubby is prepping for the first of multiple surgeries as a result of a failed procedure back in November. So we have 6-8wks to get ready for that. Due to this I seem to have missed lots of videos here and there, but I’m trying to catch up on some! It’s so nice to see you looking a little less stressed than you had been and I hope that things are beginning to settle in your stunningly beautiful home. Hoping that your doors all turned out nice and that you are getting a chance to take care of yourself and enjoy your beautiful surroundings.

I got these gouache paints. I have always used W&N forever... I am not a painter but use gouache for calligraphy. I use watercolour for background and use both brands for this too... I actually like both... I have never used the DS or M. Graham but think I want to ... I am addicted to colour and just get a 'high' with colour swatches. I love mixing paint and messing with it, so Thank you for doing this comparison for us to enjoy.

If you are doing lettering to frame originals or something like that then I would recommend artist quality lightfast paint. But if you are crafting or working in a sketchbook then it really isn’t necessary. There are cheaper artist quality paints out there as well. I need to get my watercolor video done comparing all of the student vs artist brands I own. It is coming but it is a lot to edit.

Thank you Sharon. I recall reading (don't recall source.. maybe handprint?) that mfgrs are not required by law to list any opacifiers in the ingredients which chalk would be. I guess it could be my monitor but the Arteza looks more vibrant with less color shifting especially in the darks. I use MG only in gouache and I would definitely use Arteza based on what I'm seeing. Personally, I wouldn't buy a set this big especially with the MGs (about 15 tubes) I already have. BUT... there's always that.. I have my eye on the Miya set of 15 gouaches in pots... that 3 pound set in the neat palette/box. Edit: re my first sentence... after your painting was done/dry, the Artezas don't look chalky at all. Actually if comparing that only, the liightest pigments in the artist lines you used look more chalky just by comparison to Arteza. I know MG contains no opacifiers at all so if there were light MG pigments used its actually kind of shocking to me to see the difference. I would choose Arteza. I think all artist quality pigments, across the board in all mediums, are way over priced so maybe Arteza is just making less profit... always a possibility even in today's world. Thanks again Sharon. I would definitely recommend Arteza to anyone wishing to try gouache to see if they enjoy it... quality seems there and the price is great. Just an aside, I wouldn't recommend them that way in their watercolors though.

Yes part of it is that the colors in Arteza are not as realistic to nature’s colors, so they are vibrant in comparison. Also I could have taken more time in mixing my colors to try to get them closer. All in all this isn’t a bad gouache to begin on but I always recommend professional because of the texture, ease of use and moving the paint around, less streaking etc.

I love my Arteza and I have made bomb stuff with it. I kinda think the other “artist grade” stuff is difficult to buy, and kinda over rated. I have a bunch of Windsor and Newton Gouache and I was unimpressed with them for the cost. I’ll be buying the Arteza again. I started with the 60, and I’ll re-buy the 60. It’s affordable and my art is mostly for reproduction. I like the chalky finish, anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@SharonCullenArt
@SharonCullenArt 5 жыл бұрын
When I said chalky finish I meant “Chalk” Gouache is supposed to be matte. Not chalky. Winsor and Newton gouache is a bit harder when it dries yet reconstitutes well. I really love M Graham. That is my favorite but they still have a limited color line.

@@SharonCullenArt Have you thought about adding gum arabic to Arteza. Basically you can add more binder (after watering down the paint) and it should make it more shiny (from what I read). How are light transparent? There's full box on the tube printed in black because of light label and full box on the packaging printed in white because of black background. And then you show a swatch card with lights completely covering the black line and I've seen in other videos they are pretty much titanium white with added pigment. So how they are exactly?
@SharonCullenArt
@SharonCullenArt 5 жыл бұрын
I am unsure what you are asking for. I showed how transparent they are when I showed the card. Each one is different. I did another review video on gouache where I did this only and you can watch it. As far as labeling goes, even darker colors can show opposite of some of the other dark colors on tube. It has nothing to do with the color of the tube. It is printed on the color.

I have quite a few Arteza products but not the gouache so this was informative for me. I could see that each brand have their own characteristics that depending on what your project was would work the best. I think the Arteza gouache would be great for more craft like projects. The bright colors would be fun for florals, mandalas and greeting cards. Younger anime artistswould do well with the Arteza too. The professional paints are just that PROFESSIONAL. Their colors have been developed over years with traditional pigments. The consistency of them is nicer and the purity of color great. I have professional watercolors and acrylics I hard for my professional work. But I did like Arteza's bright colors and I wanted to support an American company so I bought Arteza acrylics. I really like them for my more craft like projects. I get a near professional look without the expense. I don't have to worry about the more serious aspects like lightfastness. Thank you for doing your review. I hope that as time goes on Arteza will refine their products. They have sent various products to several KZfaq artist to both advertise and I believe to get honest feedback. I would just like to mention, the boxes that show opaque-ness of the paints are actually consistent. They have to print the boxes white on the box because it is black, and black on the tubes because they are white. It is the same thing. Sorry if this came off as offensive, but I couldn't get over it and decided to tell you. I'm sorry.
@SharonCullenArt
@SharonCullenArt 5 жыл бұрын
No offensive at all Avery. You are the second one to tell me this. I said to myself oh DUH! LOL! But then I went back to look and noted they are printed on the color strip which has nothing to do with a light tube. Dark colors will show black and some will show white. Too confusing to note. But then I contacted Eugene who told me black is transparent and white is opaque end of story

All arteza products are student grade at best! They use very fugitive pigments, brighteners, tons of fillers and dyes. There colored pencils, watercolors and watercolor pencils fade within just a week in sunlight. There are alot of vids on KZfaq of people showing how bad they fade. Just search arteza ( product ) lightfast tests. They market their stuff as professional supplies and dance around the artist grade label. Don't waste your money on cheap Chinese made junk, because that's what it is. It's great for practice and newbies, NEVER EVER for artwork sold or displayed. Have a great day
