This scene shows that things will be different than the book. The book has Camille note that she never saw Richard again after she was rescued and the mother arrested--and that, considering how he reacted when he saw her scarred up body, she didn't expect to. Well...here they interact afterwards, and they part on good terms. There's potential hope that they'll meet again. Meantime, because of this, Camille is far less likely to briefly lapse back into cutting after learning the truth about Amma.
