Just wait for it... when Eric Marienthal hits, he hit's hard! Here is a killer solo by Eric on Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band's "Hit The Ground Running", the ease with how he can't stop providing more movement into the solo is almost uncanny. It's like it is too easy for him at times. So much to learn from saxophonists!

What goes unnoticed with his playing, especially with the Chick Corea Elektric band, is his incredible intonation. I’ve listened to all of their albums multiple times over the past 30 years and his pitch is excellent, especially in the altissimo range when doubling Chick’s synths. Stud musician.

I studied with Eric Marienthal during Covid, in zoom masterclass format. A surreal experience. He played songs for us but also had technique stuff he reviewed as well as doing Q&As. Hands down the nicest guy I've ever met. His technique, control and mastery of the saxophone is downright terrifying to witness. All the sax players in "smooth jazz" are amazing players, but guys like Eric, Everette Harp, Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright are in a completely different league of their own.

I went to High School with Eric. He was 3 years ahead of me. He would come back from time to time and do concerts. My god what a talent he was even then, probably not 20 years old yet. He was my teacher at ISOMATA the summer after I graduated. Such a helpful and honestly humble person. I would later run into him during my time at GWC while studying with Tom Kubis. After moving to the east coast I ran into him again when he did a concert at a winery in the Finger Lakes. Haven't seen him since then, but picked up every CD he did. We lost Michael Brecker, but thankfully we still have Eric.

Although it is difficult to perceive, the trombones are in fact occasionally nodding their head. Although this does not seem to be a very large action in comparison to the other sections, this is one of the highest forms of respect when dealing with the low brass species.

Always loved how Eric is just so much on top of his instrument, the control in combination with the madness is unreal. And while he is riffing non-stop, he keeps it adventurous. What part did you like the most? The epic altissimo glissando? The part with only sax and drums? The modal interchange? Let me know in the comments! By the way, one silly high school story with this solo (album version, with also this altissimo glissando). I was secretly listening to Hit The Ground Running while we were supposed to work in silence, somewhere in the back of the classroom with just one earpiece in so I could still hear when the teacher would say something. All good, except when that glissando came in, it even blasted fully through the earplugs catching the attention of the class, and the teacher... Thanks for the inspiration Eric, and the detention. /Jorre

Had the pleasure of seeing Eric Marienthal play as guest artist at a jazz festival at a community college. During a masterclass segment with a QnA with a few songs here and there my question was about playing over chords and not the key. The best example I could think to use was giant steps and then after giving me some advice he and his combo performed giant steps unrehearsed. Dude was an amazing talent all the way through the night and I don’t know if I’ll ever witness such absurd levels of musicianship ever again.
