I got a used one of these several weeks ago with a clobbered edge. Not only rolled and dull but the factory bevels weren't very even. Truly long story short, reset most of the edge to 17 and was truly amazed at how sharp it was when finished. And why I wrote, I love the thing for those thinking about it. Really like the tint the steel takes on too, looks serious (and it is).

Got my first hair whittling edge tonight after watching your technique on the Spyderco stones. I tried to mimic your movements and edge finding. I was surprised on how fast it got sharp. I was so pumped! 🤣🤣😝

@@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY it was the buck 110 lightweight with the stonewashed blade. I love that knife. I had cut a bunch of plastic with it so I brought it back with a Spyderco ultrafine triangle rod and a leather strop with green compound.

I've done it that way from time to time but its not ideal. I lay thing down on a stone. or even the edge of a counter. Then I use it like an actual stone. Surprisingly decent results once the thing is broken in considering its coated abrasive. I'm not sure about the so called grit ratings tho. I think they likely all leave scratches of the same depth. I dont think I'd bother with the those spiderco branded ceramic stones tho. If it aint' diamond or cbn its not actually going to cut this steel, just burnish it and likely damage the exposed carbides in the process... better off just stropping on wood with 4 micron diamond or something along that line. Alternatively you could use something like that ceramic alumina stone to basically... gently expose more carbides proud from the matrix. Really in the weeds of mental illness at that point tho. For $250 I wouldn't suggest anyone get that knife. k390 is about the upper usable limit for these high resistance steel that boy brained edc nuts are obsessed with mostly cuz most of them don't know how to use or maintain a knife and think some shit is gonna be magic.

Haven’t had the pleasure of working on Maxamet, but I suppose nothing is a match for diamonds. I wonder how many people watch your video and think you’re speeding up the playback speed with your rapid pace? I need to keep it much slower or I fear I’d be all over the place. May just pick up a couple of those DMTs for road kit, they look handy.

It's some tough stuff but diamonds make short work of it. Nothing wrong with slow and steady, in fact my edges would probably be a tad better if I slowed down a bit. The diafold's are great to have, I keep one in my vehicles and take them with me camping and whatnot. Can sharpen anything from a pen knife to a machete or an axe with them and they're small and light weight.

Great video. I have two small chips in my M390 PM3 and I have never free hand sharpened before. My understanding is that Spyderco's come with a 30 degree back bevel and a 40 degree micro bevel. Since you were repairing a chipped edge and needed to remove a decent amount of material, did you do a complete reprofile (new back bevel and micro bevel)? I'm trying to do this myself and I am a little confused and frustrated.
@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes did a complete re-profile, if you have not sharpened freehand before I would advise against your first time being on a PM3. I would practice on a beater or two if you can first before going onto something nice. What is your sharpening setup? I know it can be somewhat frustrating at times but just takes some practice.

@@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY Hey man, thank you so much for the reply. I purchased a DMT Diafold Coarse/Fine to give freehand a go, and I experimented on my Dragonfly in ZDP-189. Possibly not the best steel to begin my freehand journey considering how hard the steel is. I do have a Spyderco Sharpmaker, but the coarsest stones I have are the medium ceramic and I wasn't sure how long it would take to remove enough material to get the chips out of the blade. I don't think they are that deep though, probably as deep as the one your Native had in this video. If I wanted to give the Sharpmaker a try, how would I go about it? It has two angles to choose from. Thirty degrees for the back bevel, and forty for the micro bevel. Since I am fixing a chip, would I need to sharpen at 30 degree until the chips are no longer there, and add a micro bevel after that is accomplished?
@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY 4 жыл бұрын
@@AV1776 Sure, no problem. The sharpmaker works well however the ceramic rods cut very slowly especially on higher alloy steels, you can get the 400 diamond rods but still kinda slow. The DMT will remove material quickly, just be careful and go nice and slow. You could get a set of wedge type guides off amazon that you attach with rubber bands, that would help give you a good idea where to hold your angle. My guess is that in the 30 degree setting the rods will make contact with the shoulder and the 40 degree will make contact near the apex as it should. Best bet IMO would be the DMT however you could take a sharpie and mark the bevel of your knife and try both the 30 and 40 degree settings to see where metal is being removed from. If the chips are not to big with a little time you may be able to remove them on the 40 depending where it's making contact.

yeah, which is maxamet is not a good choice for a general use blade steel even on a small and non heavy use pocket knife. It's mostly just a marking gimmick this company uses to get OCD prone EDC bros to drop $250 on a crappy looking knife most folks would think cost $10 at the gas station.
