When just starting out in free hand sharpening, these are the stones I always recommend. This is not "budget" minded, but I do discuss pricing of these particular brands.

The Kuromaku and the Shapton Pro stones are exactly the same, no difference whatsoever, only the name. On this side of the pond they import the stones directly from Japan and when you order a Shapton Pro you will get a Kuromaku. I contacted Shapton and they confirmed that they are exactly the same.

Awesome, thank you very much for the video, I appreciate it! I'm 100% down with getting these to work on my Spartan Blades combat knives, made from S35VN/58-60HRC steel. I already have the Norton 2.5" X 8" India coarse/fine stone, however, the fine side is #320, so I am in love with being able to get some further refinement with these stones. I'm going with just the #1200, & the #2500, since the Norton will take care of the initial work.

Hey Jef, a great video as usual; undoubtedbly some of the very best, most informative whetstone review available anywhere, right here. Kudos! You mentioned that Gritomatic stones' website said that certain alloys (E.g. 440c, 8Cr13MoV) would lead to faster wear. Now, while you do say that you've not found this to be the case; I wonder if, because of that superb collection of blades of yours, you tested this with well heat treated and harder samples of these steels. Perhaps it's using the Gritomatic stones with such alloys, but which have been left in a very soft state, that could result in faster wear? From what I think I understand, both 440c and 8Cr13MoV are uncommon stainless steels insofar as they both contain enough carbon to be readily heat treatable to 60+ HRC, so I'm thinking that there could be 10+ point gap in Rockwell C hardness between a high quality blade and a poorly heat treated one. I find it interesting that perhaps this is where the disconnect between your first-hand experience and the manufacturer's disclaimer, regarding wear speed, comes from. I'll preemptively grant any contrarians out there that this is a mainly hypothetical question; because as you very explicitly say: these silicon carbide Gritomatics would be advisable for particularly hard to grind, high carbide steels; whereas your general recommendation was for the Kuromakus. But I'd be curious to know if there's is actually some usage scenario which does result in the faster wear the manufacturer warned of with 440c, 8Cr13MoV or others.

Interesting observations, but I can only speak from own accounts. When using these stones, they just cut so fast, even with hard carbide rich steels, or something like aus8, the time on them is short. I am open to suggestions, on how to test that sort of thing.

Jef Jewell thank you once again! Just ordered bridge, suehiro holder, .5micr diamond spray... This is my second go round I tried whetstones in the early 90's wen I was a cook, living & woodworking in Boston. Jeff you've been spot on with ur guidance & observations. Muscle Memory! I'm getting there, only trouble spots i have are the tip & heal...
@Jef

Heel is still a major problem area for me. Just about every video I sharpen in, I make a comment about that area, and needing to work it more. Tips I kinda just let em do what they do. I don't focus on them, and let my strokes stop while still on the stone. I am sure many people could do better, but so far, my results have been enough for my needs. King are a solid brand. There is nothing wrong with sand paper either. It does have a slight amount of give, and will convex your apex a bit more than say a diamond plate, but I seriously doubt anyone would ever notice.

I'm thinking about buying some Shapton Pro stones but I have quite a few knives in S30V, S35VN, 20CV and of course 440C, 1095 and other low end steel. Will the Shapton Pro stones do the job?
@Jef
@Jef 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The only steel I would have hesitation towards, are the high vanadium steels. Such as s110v, s90v, Maxamet, 10v etc. I've sharpened s30, s35vn, 20cv, m390, s90v (it was doable, but tedious), 440a,b,c, all the mov steels (3cr3mov, 8cr13mov, 9cr14mov...), 154cm, cpm154, aus8, aus6, Gerber Mystery steel, Leatherman steel, Swiss Army Sak steel - and the list goes on. These stones can handle almost anything you try em against, although like everything, some other abrasives work better for certain steels. The higher you go up in wear resistant due to carbides or heat treat, the slower you will see these stones perform. That isn't to say they can't do it. Just don't expect the same progress on 440c as you would s90v. I bring that particular steel up often, bc it was the first super steel, that I sharpened, that totally ignored some of my abrasives. Shapton Glass would not cut it, once I got above 1000 grit. The pro stones, did. Take that for what it's worth.

the HCR line from Haidu ceramics in Hungary, ran me 100$ for 1k-4k-8k and 250grit for lapping, very nice sizes, Corundum abrasive. They had a retailer in USA as well, corwainertools. Imo the japanese stones, it's not that they don't do a great product, but very overrated, it's an expensive country to begin with so we can't blame them for the price. Always buy locally, i was lucky enough to live in Europe and have whetstone manufacturer close. I'm sure there are lots of out there. As long as the maker bakes the ceramic correctly. The corundum abrasive or the SiC are basically the same in any synthetic stone on the market.

The version i got were sic. They are fantastic for the price. Not as friable as the gritomatic stones, which make em a tad slower, but I have zero complaints. They did require a little lapping to flatten out and get the texture right, but i do that with all my stones. So i am unfamiliar with corundum. I thought that was pretty much another name for sic. What is the difference?
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Nevermind i googled corundum. It’s just aluminum oxide. That sucks they no longer make the sic. You could sharpen super steels with those. The alum ox haidu 1500 grit i have, won’t cut any of the cpm steels. It just burnishes them.

@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Hrc really makes no difference. Carbide volume does. I stated in the video high carbide steels work better on Gritomatic sic, Diamond, cbn. Most steels can be sharpened with shapton, with those exceptions. To be honest, even many high carbide can be sharpened on shapton, but they aren’t the best choice. If you just want a one size fits all, both sets can play that role. Gritomatic are more aggressive and shapton produce finer edges

Awesome! I got a set of the Korumaku as well, and from what I understand, they are practically the same stones as the Pro line. Shapton are my #1 stone. I love how hard they are, and the edges from them, are as good as I've ever achieved. Arkansas are fantastic, but you need to condition them once in awhile. They tend to glaze over, and stop cutting, if you use them a lot, without lapping them. Make sure you get yourself some loose silicone carbide grit, and a sheet of glass. I usually leave my Black Ark around the 6-800 grit finish. Some folks prefer even a higher grade than that, although I found going much higher, creates burnishing.
