So are you denying that children with autism grow up into adults with autism? You realize this is a genetic, physical condition caused by a difference in the wiring of the nervous system, right? Yes, you can help improve the cognitive skills of an autistic child and independence as they grow into adults, and yes, there are lots of autistic adults out there with lower support needs. However, this is not the same as their autism going away. Whether they "retain" an autism diagnosis or not, the autism does not go away. Autistic people can very much be curious and passionate about interacting with the world, people, and be intuitive and perceptive, while also fitting the diagnostic criteria. Not all autistic people are born with visible autism. I know the current science on autism and the spectrum. Neuroscience is what I will be majoring in and doing as my career when I go into grad school. I am also autistic, myself, and know a lot of autistic adults, and have known autistic children with more obvious autistic symptoms than me back then (I was a child at the time). Your view, as far as I can tell so far, on autism and the autism spectrum is very limited, and honestly comes across as ableist. You seem genuinely passionate about your job here, and about the individuals you work with. This dismissal of autistic teens and adults who are more capable of masking their disability, however, is saddening, ans honestly I feel as though ignoring this reality may interfere with your effectiveness as a provider. It's narrow views about autism like these from professionals that continues to limit the progress not only in the discovery and understanding of neurodivergency and neurdevelopmental conditions, but also handicaps millions of adults deemed "too capable" to get the help they need to function in society.

Hi there. Thank you for leaving such a well thought out comment. I appreciate that you can see that my desire to teach the cutting-edge science of autism comes deep from my heart. Congrats on majoring in neuroscience and your plans for grad school! I am not denying that some children with autism grow up into adults with autism. The video you commented on was about the published science that shows a certain percentage of children with autism lose their diagnosis. It's a well established scientific fact that some children will lose their autism diagnosis in childhood and therefore not have autism as an adult. The researchers were careful to study the outcomes and that is how they came up with the new term non-persistent autism. The causes of autism vary. Not everyone's autism is 100% related to genetics. Epigenetics also plays a role in autism. So does food, water, sleep, exercise, and so much more. Most of my videos are made with the goal of teaching parents the cutting-edge science of autism so that they can make the best decisions for their child. I started with that content because as a parent that was what I wished I had when starting on their autism journey. I found lots of opinions about autism but it was very difficult to find quality information unless I went to Pubmed. This Navigating AWEtism channel is bringing Pubmed to KZfaq. I am certainly not dismissing autistic teens or adults. I have a video on the published science of autism masking. Have you watched that one? I am happy to broaden my video topics if there is interest. What video topics about autism research interest you? Feel free to ask other autistic teens or adults to comment here too, if they'd like.
