Wow, quite an oil change. It is beyond me why the just didn’t design a trap or swing door a 3-4 inches inches in size and just swing or swivel it open to do the oil drain. I think ill be buying a 2018 RT semi auto 6 speed. If it has this problem it may be worth the hassle to make my own doors. Then all future oil changes would be sooooo much easier. Thanks for the very informative video and sharing your little but important tricks and tips!

Good video - A little long, but a lot of detailed information. Thanks for your tips - Working on the Spyder is a little intimidating for me and looks like I will be taking it to a dealer or reputable shop that won't charge an arm and leg! Thanks.

watching you take the Spyder apart makes me wonder just how many owners break things not knowing all your little tricks of the trade. I could just see myself breaking something trying to do all that lol listening to you talk about oil reminds me. I've got a brother in law works at a local refinery. They do gas , oil & other products for lots of different companies. They do different blends for each one using formulas in a folder. Every so often someone screws up the blend. If the supervisor doesn't catch it they'll send out the tanker loaded because no one wants to admit they screwed up and get fired. So i guess you never know what you're getting especially on the graveyard shift

I have a three cornered 3/8ths drive palm wrench from Snap on I got back in the 70s when I was wrenching for a living. It sure came in handy for bolts I couldn't turn by hand. When you figure out what the soap is we would all love to know. We used ZAP industrial soap at my old work. Thanks for sharing this.

I stuff a couple shop towels in front of my skid plates on my Chevy Z71 for the same reason. It acts as a filter to keep the oil from running up the back of the skid plate and dripping oil for a few days. Got so many tools overflowing out of my 1 tool chest one of these days I'll stop being so cheap and buy another chest or two and get a little organized.

Shawn after watching your vid I now know I will take my spyder in to have the oil changed. Question for you on the oil changes the manual says 9500 miles if I remember I will check that out again, how long do you go between oil changes and what do you recommend being the best. thanks for the help

Shawn do you have the spyders up on your lift at work to change oil and filter? can ya not use a regular car jack and pump it up on the frame so easier to get to? so interesting to watch you service them. not sure I would ever try it anyways. Is it the same way with the F3? thanks for letting us watch that's cool. thanks man

I wondered about making three ramps to drive the bike on so the it’s easier to get to rather drain plugs, or buy some? It sure would make it a lot easier!,

You know, you could always take a piece of Ducting tape (the aluminized tape) and tape off that pan so it can't run back up it.

oh lord I thought it said little over 10 minutes not over 40 minutes.LOL Guess I should always wear my glasses lol May be a long one but so darn interesting. I'm sure If you weren't vlogging it,you could have done it a lot quicker.takes time to explain good work like that. and I'm sure a lot of people learned a lot about not taking short cuts when servicing there's but will still be stubborn and say oh oils oil and orings will last 2 or three services.lol My F3 goes back to the dealer for the install of all the exccessories i bought and also for the 1000 mile service the 19th and said I won't get it back until maybe friday. wow the money I could save if I could do it all my self. the things you mentioned about what costumers do that messes things up.well that's why I will always take it back to the pros.LOL AWESOME VLOG SHAWN !!!

How about a headlight(low bulb) change video on the 2016 RTS? Tried to do it according to op manual but the manual is lacking. Paid $200 to get it changed at dealership. What a rip! Never had a problem doing it on my previous rides(2 wheelers)

Could you put a wax coated paper dixie cup(bottom cut out) in the drain area to keep the oil from running onto the undercarriage pan ? We use this on a much larger machine at work.

The two different drain plugs is a new thing to me. The use of a canister type oil filter makes the Spyder similar to some of the newer cars that use them as opposed to screw on filters. 5 quarts is a lot of oil. There are many cars that do not use that much oil lol.

Is there more than one drain plug on that drivers left side that takes a T 45? I started to pull what I thought was the oil drain plug on but the fluid coming out looks a little bit red?!! Is that what spent BRP oil looks like? Might I have pulled the plug for some other type of fluid? I only drained a few tablespoons before tightening it back up. Hoping you can coach me on this before I go back at it. Thanks!

Great video, fixing to do the first oil change on my 2019 RT Limited.Should it have the acoustic cover under the top side panel, mine does not.
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 5 жыл бұрын
There was a running production change in 2017 where the acoustic cover was removed. You should only see a black steel suport bar that does not need to be removed during the oil filter change. Thanks Gary!

Am I to understand that there are two different drain plugs for the oil? I noticed on the video you loosened one drain plug, and then went to the other side and loosened another. I'm going to be doing my first oil change on my Spyder, so I am interested in learning this. I've never had a bike where I had two drain plugs.

Is changing the oil on a 2015 Can Am Spyder RT 1330 Triple any different than changing it on a 2012 Can Am Spyder RT-SE5?
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 7 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Nessman - No Thomas, the 991 twins are different in every way with their oil change procedure. Seems like I did a video on the twins, but I may not have posted it... I'm not allowed to film procedures at work anymore, and may be the reason... Thanks for watching and commenting!
@ThomasNessman

Shawn Smoak I've also been told that that the 1330cc, three cylinder Can Am Spyder, actually achieves better gas mileage than the two cylinder. Even the local dealership has said as much. I don't find that the gas gauge is all that accurate, perhaps less so than those found on a Harley or Honda Gold Wing. And if it has a low fuel indicator, I've never seen it come on.

how to reset service monitor without buds?
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 7 жыл бұрын
It cannot be done without BUDS. However, the rider is never presented with a service reminder from the vehicle, it's an internal thing that only BRP can see through a BUDS report, if ever requested from the dealer. At the dealer level, we can only see the hours since the last service. It's only a concern if there is a questionable warranty issue that proper maintenance from a dealer would have otherwise taken care of during routine scheduled maintenance intervals... Thanks for watching and commenting Peter!

If a formula of more synthetic is better oil why not 100 percent synthetic?
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 5 жыл бұрын
Well that’s the thing, there are no actual 100% synthetic oils..! The only have to be a percentage (not sure of the number) of synthetic to be called 100% Kinda like “It’s 100% American Made” doesn’t really exist. I don’t like these misleading statements myself..! Thanks Scott!

Why not just use full synthetic oil in it?
@ShawnSmoak

At 70%, the BRP blend has as much or more than a lot of advertised full synthetic oils... This oil is so proven, I wouldn't consider using anything else... Thanks for watching and texting!
