She was Burt Bacharach's (the guy with the lovely voice) singing muse. She has the best phrasing of any singer I've ever heard. And singing all those amazing Bacharach and David songs makes for one of the greatest teams in popular music history

Ms. Warwick is music royalty! Extremely successful career! Her maternal aunt is Cissy Houston, making her cousins with the late Whitney Houston. Her sister Dee Dee also had a successful singing career. You can NEVER go wrong with reacting to a Dionne Warwick song! Burt Bacharach is also a fun rabbit hole of classic American pop songs!

Speaking of "closed mouth" singers, I will add Roy Orbison and Tammy Wynette. They all got so much projection and volume despite vocalizing in a way people would be taught not to. Of the three, Warwick was definitely a trained singer and her technical skills was one of the reasons David/Bach sought her out to sing their rather complex songs.

Dionne Warwick is one of America’s greatest female singers of the 20th Century. She has been active in the entertainment industry since 1955, according to Wikipedia. She had her greatest musical success during the 1960s and 1970s. Warwick has won six Grammy Awards, both as a solo artist, and in teamups with other music artists. She is a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and later this year, will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Dionne Warwick will celebrate her 84th birthday in December.

Burt Bacharach was the guy speaking at the beginning. He composed the music to this song (and most of Dionne's songs of this era) which was a collaboration with his lyricist partner Hal David. This must have been on a non-American (British?) TV show. Burt was an American. The British singer you were referring to who also sang this song is Cilla Black.

In a stage setting, tiny bindi microphones can be concealed in the hairline or cheek. These are almost invisible unless you know what to look for, and are near the front. In a TV studio, almost certainly miming.

This performance was from a 1964 or 1965 special on British TV featuring Burt Bacharach songs. There were many great tunes on this show, among them "Planes and Boats and Trains" in its original form. Her performance of this tune from a live performance in Belgium at a restaurant/bar in Belgium is amazing. What a voice. The collaboration between Ms. Warwick and Messrs. Bacharach and David produced some of the most beautiful music ever recorded.

Only Aretha Franklin had more charted hits. These songs were literally written for her, she sang some of the most difficult songs ever written for pop music. This is one of many songs Luther Vandross, who counted her as his musical inspiration, covered. She was first Black woman to win Grammy in pop music. She started in Gospel and later won Grammy in R&B too, 60+ year career. She is formally trained in music too with advanced degrees. American treasure (yes, Whitney H is her first cousin). She did some minor acting roles, but not actress, singer and activist.

Of course I pray for you ;-) - Dionne Warwicks albums (Walk On By / Greatest Hits) are for weeks the only thing I listen to walking over a mile to work (crossing Ku'damm in Berlin - a bit like 125th St. in NYC): Sometimes with odd 60's sound effects in the mastering; it's really a treat (before the daily BS is breaking loose). Listen to "Walk on by" - this is a song I always come back to (like a magic formula, like BeeGees "Nights on braodway" - I wait, even if it takes forever …). One more thing: Gil Scott Heron (known for political black jazz like "B-Movie") has a beautiful voice - look for something like "Winter in America" (will will see what I mean).

There is a story behind Cilla Black’s recording of ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart.’ Dionne was singing a concert in Paris and a couple of the Beatles-who were fans-attended (with a tape recorder). Dionne introduced ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ by saying: ‘This is our new single release and it will be out in a couple of weeks.’ The Beatles rushed their recorded version back to London. Cilla Black was on the Beatles record label. She listened to the tape. Ran into the studio and did a rip-off version of Dionne’s live performance, which was rushed out in the UK BEFORE Dionne’s recording was released there. Cilla then made a mini-career of covering Dionne Warwick songs: including ‘Alfie’ for the film version. Needless to say, Dionne never had a kind word for Ms. Black who is now dead.

This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It is one of many that Dionne recorded for Bacharach and David. Others include Walk On By, The Look of Love, Do You Know the Way to San Jose and I Say a Little Prayer, amongst many others. There was a string of hits, mostly in the 60s, but recently Bacharachs cool style has become popular again, and Dionne delivers it so well

Britt, as many of your responders here have mentioned, Dionne has a number of of great songs besides this one, each with its own particular charm and beauty. One that has stayed in my heart since the early 60's is called "Trains and Boats and Planes." It first touched me when my girlfriend, who was a foreign-exchange student, said goodbye and returned to Europe. The song -and the memory of our love - has stayed with me forever. Such is Dionnes' magnitism. Give it a listen, and you'll see why.

a lot of times on those shows the people running things wouldn't let the artist perform live.... maybe because a lot quicker to pump through the artists on the show...easy to tell...go listen to the studio version and if all the backing vocals and instruments sound the same then they lip syncing . . .you see some groups playing up coz they obviously not happy having to lip sync . . . .

Dionne was a very prolific recording artist in the 60's through the eighties. She recorded so many Burt Bacharach and Hal David songs. My favorite is her recording of Alfie which was used in a movie by the same name. from the 60;s. Her Deja Vu album from the early 80;s is grea.t She teamed up with Barry Manilow and her producer and had 2 great hits from that album. I Know I ;ll Never Love This Way Again and the song Deja Vu She had so many hits it is too many to mention,

@@stephenhowell5611 No it was Barry Manilow who produced her Deja Vu album. Look it up.

@@deborahscalise3215 ok. I don't think Dionne's Alfie was used in the movie, that was Cher I think, although Cilla recorded it first to promote it in the UK.

About the production: it can go either way. Sometimes there was a boom mic, sometimes they lip synced. In the case of this song, she sang it note for note like the studio recording. Some performers could do that, others would throw in something a little extra. I think the young Dionne looks more like a younger Angela Basset with a smidge of Teyanna Taylor.

Born Dionne Warrick; when she released her debut single in 1962, they misspelled her name on the record, she stuck with Warwick ever since.

Ok Dionne is Legend! Her voice is immediately identifiable-so smooth and her tone so unique and quite hard to replicate. Btw, this is the least popular song of hers I’ve heard. She has quite a catalog (one was featured in My Best Friend’s Wedding). If you enjoy her you might like Karen Carpenter-who also had a distinct, smooth, smiling voice. Her life was cut short at the age of 32 from Anorexia Nervosa but she still had quite the catalog with her brother Richard. She also played the drums. They were known as the “squares” of the time. But her voice!! ❤
