She's Just Another Navy Pilot: An Aviator's Sea Journal | Loree Draude | Talks at Google

Loree is the Head of AdWords Communities and Social Engagement here at Google. She’s also a pioneer in our midst - she was one of the US Navy's first female jet pilots in a combat squadron. In her book, She's Just Another Navy Pilot: An Aviator's Sea Journal, Loree describes the early opposition to women joining the previously male-only jet pilot community and the sometimes open hostility she encountered.

Hers is one of the better written Naval Aviation books out there. If you're a simulator nerd like I am, or a genuine pilot or enthusiast- this talk and her book are an excellent addition to the experience. It's a shame the difference in comments and views on this work, versus some of the more bland "there i was" books and talks making their rounds. I'm going to save the rest of this video for after I finish the book, which has been a real treat. Hopefully this gets more viewership and readership.

I absolutely love love love the fact that she’s not in uniform but still wears the medals.. that is so so cute, isn’t it! Who says women don’t know what’s right and wrong!

Impressive. She could be my wingman, or my lead anytime. I remember how difficult it was for women aviators at the time, and she seems to have survived very well. I would have been proud to have flown with her.

Why in the world would you wear your medals and wings in casual attire like that? It looks ridiculous.

Might be. But her service is not. It is actually prescribed wear for veterans (different military services authorize different combinations), and encouraged - particularly if one is proud to have served. If accurate and correct, "being ridiculous" is not 'on her", but on those who would not see the positives. Good on her.
