Installing custom solar power on our old catamaran sailboat to go sailing long distances off grid! Our family is about to leave suburbia and we need a reliable way to power our lives. In several previous videos we made modifications to our catamaran sailboat to allow for a massive solar array. In this video we turn the corner and all pieces come together!

The higher you install your GPS antenna, the more “Bounce 😮” or gps error. The lower you can install it to sea level the better. Most sailors just fit them somewhere on the deck , not in the way. I like your solar arch; looks well made and really strong. Good luck.👍

Thanks Andrew. So far we haven’t had any trouble. If we start to get errors I’ll know where to start troubleshooting! 😉 thanks! Corey

Well done, must have been exciting seeing those first few watts come flowing in 👍

Hi Martin, Yes!! We actually have all 4 of the aft solar panels up and we have seen over 1000 watts which is huge because it’s winter here and the sun is low in the sky. Hopefully we’ll see even more when we’re further south. Cheers buddy, Corey

It's alive!!!!! Ok... where is your to do list for leaving? I'm assuming that you will wander down the coast so you will have access to stores and don't need to be completely ready to go and provisioned for an ocean crossing. I am also assuming that your wandering will be an awesome shake out cruise so you are confident when you do leave the states. I'm feeling nervous excitement for you! You have accomplished so much!!! You are really doing it!!

Nice dinghy davit solar arch setup. If at some point you need more power ( perhaps the flexible panels don't produce as much power as you want) consider two slide out panels on the outboard sides of the solar arch. See fellow YTuber Sail Life Athena episode of about 1 yr ago for design. Two new 340w panels on these slide outs would only be extended while on mooring or anchor. Fair winds....

Good thought! We watch Mads, his arch / solar setup is impressive.

Well some solar is good. I hope you get out. My engine is shot so I won't be splashing tomorrow like I had hoped. A big disappointment.

Oh man, that’s terrible. I hope it’s something fixable. I just snapped off two bolts in my heat exchanger. (Didn’t film it) taking it to a machinist tomorrow to have them get these bolts out. Hope they don’t have to drill them…. I wish the PO had used some anti seize.

@@SaltyEscape Yeah same here...two bolts in the block that held my starter...three..well they aren't really bolts for my heat exchanger....also my transmission lever on the transmission housing was seized. Tried to move it and broke a portion of the casing off. The motor has been under water on my end I am fairly sure. I have only gotten a few of the smaller fasteners to cooperate. The big ones were not in bad enough shape to remove....I did get a NAnni diesel quote for less than 8k so I think I'll be ordering one.

Wow! That’s terrible. I wanted to do some other engine maintenance/ remove some parts and paint but I think I’m best to leave well enough alone. The crappy part for me is I was just trying to do some basic routine maintenance on the port heat exchanger. Clearly it hasn’t been done in a very long time.

@@SaltyEscape Yeah with marine engines it's always Russian roulette when doing anything with them. Look up Barnacle Buster it works pretty well on heat exchangers. You probably have some hope of getting the bolts out of yours. I'm going to try a lot of heat from a mapp gas torch and then weld a nut onto the end of mine that snapped off. Ive rebuilt so many engines, but this one has so much tough corrosion down in the threads...definitely underwater seepage. The sad thing is I don't think any of the water got into the block...it's just everything attached to it after sitting for a bit.

Completely agree! Map gas, see if they will loosen up. Welding a nut is a good plan b. Followed by trying your best to drill it out and re tap it. Good luck!
