In the montage, they legit had Amanda Bynes copying random guys walking around. The guys' reactions were genuine. Also, the props department had to make a special tampon to fit in Amanda's nose for this film. There are so many great quotes in this film. Easily in my top 5 favorites of ALL time.

HARD agree on how channing tatum acted in this movie like... i thought this was one of his most authentic acting 😭. it only seems silly cuz its a romcom, but he seriously needs to be known outside of magic mike.

This film is still genuinely hilarious. There are so many genius comedic moments. And I know it's obvious and basic but "chew like you have a secret" still absolutely kills me. Also, I'd put Zac Efron in with Channing Tatum as two "hot guys" who turned about to be really funny and great in comedic roles.

I saw this (along with Mean Girls) when I was 9, that time when you feel like you're watching something scandalous and inappropriate (which is pretty tame in retrospect). People are not talking bout that ICONIC restaurant scene enough. The line, the delivery (OO-GLAAAY), just *chef's kiss*... such a good time for teen comedies.

I miss Amanda Bynes, she was everywhere in the 2000's, though it's sad that she fizzled out too early. I hope that she's doing better out of the limelight now. She's stated that she stopped acting because she felt uncomfortable with how she looked as a guy, basically experiencing reverse gender dysphoria, of sorts.

I think Duke should've been bi, and implied to be caught between a crush on his bro and Olivia, like the Duke was implied to be in the play. In the play, when Viola confesses her love as the Page boy, the Duke is like... very conflicted, and even says subtly "yeah bro, ily, but- but- like, you're a man, a hot sexy loyal man who I would 100% marry in you were a girl, but you're not so-"

So if that's the case, this is the second movie in a row you've seen based on Shakespeare this month. My brother and I watched Motocrossed quite a bit as kids. Explains my gender a lot now lol. Both movies are based off of the Twelfth Night, which is my favorite Shakespeare play, definitely worth watching if you can find a recording of it. I watched Motocrossed again a couple years ago, I had forgotten how cringe/in your face the dad telling Andi that she couldn't do ANYTHING because she is a girl was. It's way worse than the whole debutante thing in She's the Man, imo.

@@killedbyrabbits right?? it's WILD and then that guy he gets to replace her??? yikesss it's just WILD that a character has the same first and middle names as me in something like that because wow i identified with her so hard as a kid, it really hits different when you see a character with the same name doing the things you want to do (cut hair short, start using a specific gender neutral nickname, all that) it was my formative childhood trans movie for sure i saw she's the man when i was like 20 so it wasn't so much part of my childhood as motocrossed was but i still love it too i know they're based on the same thing but they're kind of different in a lot of ways too they both definitely fit into the mulan "i'll make a man out of you" genre for trans mascs lol

They really need to make rom-coms like this again! I've heard so many actors mentioning that they would be up for a romance/rom-com movie yet the studios gives us nothing...

A movie I saw in the theater, 1991, that became a sleeper HIT that year is "Fried Green Tomatoes"....Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy. I Highly Recommend. Love transcends gay/bi/straight. It's a film about real life

Sophia Phan I relate to the not being into sports thing, except in my case "Field of dreams" and the remake of" Angels in the outfield" were the only two movies that made me give a fuck about baseball⚾🤣 One of these days I hope to see the original one.

Loved this movie!! If anyone wants to watch a similar movie, there’s one called Just One of the Guys, another romcom gender swap but from the 1980s! Its pretty good! The premise is the same where the main character pretends to be a boy at another high school to prove that she deserves to be recognized for her writing! Since her writing was snubbed at her other school because she was a girl! Also she looks SUPER cute and handsome as a guy! So these two movies are my fav! 🥰

One of my favourite comedies of all time! And I refuse to believe that CGI wasn't used here 15:35 because the way her mouth formed was straight cartoon stuff, it always gets me lol 🤣it's a shame that Amanda didn't have the support network she needed growing up, she was definitely one of the better child actors/comedic actress coming out at the time

I find it extremely unrealistic for the showers in a private school to be openly public. I doubt most people want to be naked in front of a bunch of other people. I think the dialogue got a bit cringe around the time fake-Sebastian tried to hook Duke up with Viola. During the reveal, I can kind of see Viola flashing her boobs like she did because throughout the movie, she doesn't come off as very womanly so she's probably like, "who cares, they're boobs, fuck it!"

Women always seem surprised that sensitive, funny, introspective, emotionally-available and insightful guys are out there, waiting to be engaged and connected with. They are certainly not the majority, of course, but they are more common than one might think…and they don’t always look like Tatum. My one real issue with this film (which I have only seen once ad it was 15 years ago, I admit) is the loss of focus and the homogeneity of the social dynamics. I guess that’s two issues. The plot is fun at times, no argument, mostly due to the comedy and timing of the leads. Bynes can be very funny and the subtle little asides during her conversations and interactions with the boys (and the girls) are fun to pick out, like little awkward Easter eggs. But what is this movie really ABOUT? Viola wants to play for the Tar Heels, ok, cool, good aspiration. But when her team gets cut (which, I’m sorry, took me out of the film almost immediately because the social backlash of such a decision would have proven WAY too scandalous for a school THAT wealthy, the exposure alone would have been undesirable for the schoolboard and many, MANY other budgetary issues would have come to light) the first decision the girls make is to join/integrate with the boys team. The FIRST decision, mind you. There’s No attempt to get more girls interested in the team, no rally or support from parents who have probably invested heavily in their daughters’ sports aspirations (from ANY of the other team members, mind you), nothing is really done to correct what is ostensibly a minor problem that could have been solved with an open draft (think Bring It On; they needed a cheerleader, they got a gymnast…the greater serves for the lesser). Essentially, they didn’t even try to work within the system to solve the problem. Instead, they tried to make the only remaining soccer team co-ed…and it backfires HARD. Now don’t mistake me, co-ed sports are definitely a future we should all prepare for, especially with sports that are inherently NOT full contact (soccer, baseball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, MULTIPLE Olympic events, etc). The divisive social topic of sexual identification notwithstanding, the point of sports is to compete, win and set records. Eventually, the maintenance of one’s sexual dimorphism is going to take a back seat to an athlete’s ability to remain competitive (even guys do it, steroids are a great idea until someone wants to have kids or live past 50, but at the time, ALL THAT MATTERS is maintaining the edge in competition). Should the coach have allowed the girls to play on the men’s team outright? No…but they should have been allowed to try-out, just like any team-sport where money or someone’s future career might be at stake. From that point on, the plot becomes as convoluted and quirky and emotionally silly as you might expect. The focus on proving that girls can compete with boys is all but lost…maybe that was the point, but if this was ever about proving Viola could do something just as well as her male counterparts, it was lost in the shower, baldness, tampon and public-breakup jokes. This in-and-of-itself is not bad writing, given the time-period and the company who produced the film, but level-of-engagement is somewhat lost again for one simple reason (for me, at least): the plight of pretty people just isn’t that interesting to me anymore. I played high school sports, football, soccer, track and field, and yes, there were a few hunks on the team…but most of us were fugly mooks who liked to hit things and have fun. 90% of us were NOT dating the poms or cheer girls, and what’s more, any girl who said “girls with a$$e$ like mine do not talk to guys with faces like yours” was NOT a girl…she would have been in her twenties, like the vast majority of the cast in this film. I get it, teen actors can be nightmare to work with…but don’t expect me not to know the difference. The could have set this in college…matter of fact, why didn’t they? They all LOOK young and desirable, which was the point of ½ the casting. The other half of the cast was wasted! Julie Hagerty, Vinnie Jones, David Cross, Lynda Boyd…SUPER under-utilized (and in the case of Cross…really just not that funny, but look what he had to work with). The kissing-booth bit was created to make normal people look ugly and desperate and socially undesirable, and to exploit that for comedic effect, while confirming what we already knew: the hot people will create emotional entanglements, sexual tension and eventually pair-off and fall for each other. Who saw that coming? 🙄 I get why this film was appealing to the people it appealed to. Perhaps as I approach 40 I am just not that easily drawn-in by this stuff anymore, but even in my early 20s, the draw of this film and others like it really fell short. Overall, this film strikes me as FINE: the cast is fine, the comedy is serviceable, the premise is week but already established as situational, the ending is predictable and the satisfaction derived from it is inoffensive at best. I’m glad it did what it did for those who enjoyed it...but It’s no “Bend it like Beckham” or “Little Giants”. Good review though! It’s fun to watch you get into these things and catch the cringe as it happens. What’s next? 😛
