We throw fits about lil stupid shit like this and dont put any energy into this that will have a long term effect on us. At this point We look like the racist now. I believe Carols daughter was bought out by L'Oréal but I don't recall any marketing campaigns which ignoredtheir base of African American women. Shawn Cox No Walmarts in my city. I'm old enough to remember the 60s, when the first wave of natural hair emerged. It wasn't sustainable because of lack of good products based on science and social/economic support. Now, Shea Moisture is out there on social media, the shelves, magazines, etc. But to grow, they've got to expand their market base. Plenty of kinky haired white people out there. And if they make a product line (to add to the dozens they already have out) for finer textured hair, I'm not going to be mad, I'm going to buy their stock! Unfortunately, they didn’t catch this ad. I bet they will be more vigilant from now on.

Please black ladies, start making your own hair care products and boycott all of these companies, including shea moisture. The CEO doesn't care about black women, no more than Loreal, Revlon or any other corporate brand. Furthermore, if you go to linkedin and search the various corporate positions at Shea Moisture, you will find that the black CEO's entire Sr. Leadership and Marketing team are white (besides 2-3 black/mixed race people). This explains why shea moisture thought it was perfectly acceptable to exclude black women. Also, despite what they say, the actual products have changed. We all know that our hair needs are very different than caucasian hair. Our hair is dry and needs ample oils and moisture, while their hair is very oily (which explains why they must wash their hair daily). This one size fits all simply doesn't work. Many of their products have been watered down to ensure that white women, asians and mixed women with loose curly hair can comfortably use their products. Black women need to stop feeling obliged to support companies who participate in our clear erasure. There are so many beautiful dark women with a variety of hair textures, and we need to learn how to embrace ourselves, first and foremost within our own platforms and forums. Biracials and other non black women should not be allowed to hijack OUR natural hair movement. I will not support Shea Moisture... and I won't be supporting the other corporate hair companies as well. I will be making my own natural products at home, and saving a lot of money. If you want to learn how to make your own natural hair products, do a search on youtube and you will find a variety of different videos. Instead of wasting money on these companies ladies, let's take that money and add it towards our 401K and Roth IRA contributions. We need to be smart, savvy brown foxes, in this Western jungle!

Annica Powell, surely there are better ways of getting your point across. As black women, we have to learn to do better, by showing a greater level of respect for other people's opinions. It's fine to have your opinion, but it's not good when you show blatant disrespect. For the record, I do not harbor any negative feelings toward biracial or multi-racial women. I simply wish that we as black women, had more positive representations of ourselves, and I also wish that instead of Ads repeatedly show-casing racially ambiguous women (as the "black" representation), that we were able to see a greater variety of actual black women (which encompasses dark, brown, caramel and light skin represented in a positive manner together, demonstrating true sisterhood).

1-these questions from the panelists did not get to the core of what the backlash is about 2-Shea moisture chose to alienate the very demographic that literally marketed and promoted their products -BLACK WOMEN 3-Shea sold part of their company to Bain Capital (Mitt Romney) and from that business decision they planned to X out Black women to become more marketable to ALL. With that push to be more 'diverse' they allowed their company & product to be integrated 3-Shea became a multi-million $ brand with the help of Black women because they were a unique brand unlike all the hundreds of hair products on the shelves that cater to white women's hair. Now to mass appeal you totally erase the Black women who are the majority of your base. 4-it is disingenuous to say for 20+ years you had Black women in mind and then expect us to stand right along beside you after you brush us off now that you want to appeal to all. 5-there are literally 100s of shampoos, conditioners, lotions that are exclusively made for non-Black women....you've now became a brand that is like all the others 6- there is a diff in expansion for a company vs selling out

Comparing those struggles to someone who doesn't know how to style it is ridiculous. Many Black women have grown up not knowing how to wash their own natural hair because we've spent so much time trying to chemically alter it or hide it, not for styling purposes but for survival. stop pandering.

White women have no reason to build an attachment to any product and they are not excluded in any... however you excluded blk images from your commercial. Usually I never comment on any social media, but this issue will always be an exception to me. I'm a black woman that lives in South Africa ,and I've joined the natural hair community for a little over 3 years now. It is literally impossible walking into any local store and find a product that caters for my type of hair. Every hair Isle in every shop has rows and shelves of Caucasian hair products that cater for every type of their hair you can think of and then you have two little shelves with hair products for black women that does everything else except cater for the hair in it's natural state. we still don't have the luxury of walking into a local beauty supplier store and finding natural hair products, because they simply just haven't reached our shelves yet. You speak of expanding your horizons and the first thing that comes to mind is Caucasian women how about getting your products beyond the shores and boarder lines of first world countries who have women in dire need of these products than those society's always revered their hair regardless of the products they use.

Nope. This isn't SheaMoisture's first mistake. They have been making a series of mistakes within recent years. Each time, the audience would "give them another chance". This mistake was just the one "that broke the camels back". SheaMoisture CEO Richelieu Dennis is always "issuing we're sorry we got caught apologizes" to their core audience every few months. Prior to this past weeks incident, he issued another apology earlier this month concerning another incident (that luckily didn't hit the fan). This backlash has been in the making for a long time. All of SheaMoisture's incident stem from the company trying to erase their core audience and having a "Take the money and run" and "We're outta here" mentality. As result, they are fed up and taking their money elsewhere. People are finally seeing the light that SheaMoisture wasn't really made for them. These people have the right to move on and support other black owned businesses (or not). This situation is at SheaMoisture's own doing. No one is obligated to support SheaMoisture. People need to get out of the mindset that ALL Black Owned Businesses need to be supported "just because they're black". NO. Like other businesses around the world, you need to bring more to the table other than being black. Bad businesses need to fall and good businesses need to thrive, no matter what race. We need to only support only GOOD BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES. SheaMoisture isn't one of them anymore. I mean come on, SheaMoisture's corporate staff is predominately Caucasian now. The company use to be majority of black employees. It makes you wonder how many talented black people were either laid off or left SheaMoisture because of their multiple shifts in course. There are so many excellent back owned business out there now (especially with the access of e-commerce and the Internet). There's 13 other black owned haircare companies that sit right next to SheaMoisture in Traget, Sally Beauty Supply, and Wal-Mart etc. And, I'm not talking about Cantu, As I Am or African Pride because they are not black owned. I wish people would stop perpetuating stereotypes about black women / men, stop making comments on situations they don't know about, and do some research to make a valid and factual comments.

Do you really expect me to give this brother a pass. He signed off on this ad campaign. He knew exactly what he was doing. Shea Moisture needs to respect their target audience, which are Melanoid women. Shea Moisture's first mistake was accepting the investment from Bain Capital. As a business owner, I'm aware of growing ones' business, but this is bigger than that. The natural hair care movement will allow Black businesses to take back what's rightfully ours. We need to be unapologetically Black and stop looking for approval from white people. Shea Moisture needs to focus on growing their global audience. The natural hair care industry throughout Europe and Africa (especially Northern Africa) is an open market.

I spend twice what caucasian women, will ever spend for hair care. Now as a CEO, of a supposed black owned company, you expect ethnic women to understand their struggles, NOT! We put your company in the mainstream, and made you wealthy. You need to remember, where you came from! Once ethnic women are betrayed, by greed it's going to be hard to move forward. I have a hard time believing that Mr. Rich or the people around him did not see the first roll-out. It's so unfortunate this happened. I am a huge fan of SM. If this type of thing happened rarely, I could quickly forgive the misstep, but this happens consistently with black owned business that are trying to expand. The models start to look more European and less like their base. The quality of the product even changes, which I have been reluctant to believe, but I have noticed some difference in the SM products I use. Maybe they could have explained in the add that the "natural hair movement" has inspired others to live their hair truth and go from there. Maybe they could add a line for naturally straight and wavy hair ladies rather than change the product to suit multiple hair textures. I just don't see why this needed to happen the way it did. Unfortunate.

Sundial bought a minority share of the Shea Moisture brand. So from the beginning Sundial's intention was to market to the White Dollar. Now the Black Shea Moisture CEO claims in his apology that the SEQUENCE of the series of commercials "SLIPPED" by them. The truth in a nutshell is if they had rolled out the first commercial with the sister's with dark skin and kinky hair it would have forever solidified to White America that Shea Moisture was a "Black" or "Ethnic" product (you only get one chance to maker a first impression). So the sequence of the commercial was NO ACCIDENT. See, the black woman with dark skin and kinky hair commercial was to come later, much later as if she too was included when the truth is the kinky haired dark skinned black woman built the Shea Moisture Empire. I do not fault these people for wanting to expand their business, but in doing so they have revealed their true selves and what and how they really feel about the people who made them who they are. I AM DONE.

My family has been in the black hair care business for over 3 generations.and in the 1980s black beauty supply stores, businesses, etc all went out of business and it was largely because black hair care businesses were not able to complete with multinational businesses..We literally had over 10 black beauty supply stores and all got shut down..and we tried very hard to get black people to understand what was happening in the 80s and the 90s and the customer and the businesses refused to expand how we did business.. Now they are all gone..

I don't think it's about the "black owned" I think the issue is that black women's hair has struggles that have not been catered to and when a company comes and says "hey we're providing a product for you" and we respond and bring up the company, it really feels weird that they come and say sorry we're catering to another audience. I'm sure if women finally got their white hair struggles catered to after largely being ignored and then suddenly the company switches to black audience then they would have backlash as well

Real Truth No matter how harsh and nasty you want to be, I'm actually in agreement with your point that "there are more Black people like me out there who are tired of the white and Non-Black POC racism and Anti-Blackness and genuinely want to put money into the hands of people who look like me and want to actively invest in our GROUP FUTURE." I'm not arguing with this point at all. I'm saying that there a people perhaps NOT you that will boycott this brand than run to buy Pantene (for example) as they just launched a campaign targeting WOC. I'm stating this because this is a fact, why do they do this perhaps they are insecure? This may not be the issue at hand but in a way, it is because at least we can say that this brand has supported the black community. Nowhere did I say that I want to include EVERYONE because that's actually far from the truth. Dumbass. I am simply questioning the behavior because the black people that are boycotting this brand will go and support brands that have ZERO interest in them and their community. And won't even support ANY black owned brands.

+MIMI232 *We can't be racist*. It is impossible with the economic disparities, the wealth gap that exists and all of the shit that happened to Black people on a national and on a global scale. Europeans know it. YOU know it. I definitely know it. We don't have the fucking structure, we don't have the same social and economic guarantees, the same long trail of blood rooted in ethnic hatred and wickedness of the many genocides they've caused not just of black people but other groups as well. We don't have the same history of abusing people based on COLOR, passing laws to "suppress the human rights of whites" and we haven't done shit to these white people who don't to STOP ABUSING EVERYONE. Asking white women if they actually use this product isn't racist, it's a genuine question. Asking them why the fuck they always feel the need to be the face of everything, always be the center of attention, always be the overseer in black culture, always drive a wedge, always make it a point that what's theirs is theirs but what's ours is theirs too. Confronting the blatant unrelenting racism is BRAVERY.

+Real Truth Well alright!! What you've said has many truths to it & I agree on many levels, however I honestly just wanted to know if they in fact do use the product...because I can't understand why a company that initially started in order to cater to black individuals found it important to now change, in order to reach a wider market. I mean, hey I have no problem with any ethnic group using a product, I meant it's not my right to say no Caucasian woman can use this product. However, I fail to understand why Shea Moisture not too long ago had a campaign regarding 'our' products being in the ethnic isle & wanted to break down the walls....now finds it imperative to now cater those who were blocking us to begin with. I'm just confused, I don't know why minorities always feel like having Caucasian acceptance is imperative, when they don't feel the same. Anywhoo, I said all that to say I'm just wondering if all this breaking down barriers, is all worth it, if white woman are not even using the product to begin with & now he's alienated his original target group for more acceptance of others. This has really backfired more than they even know!

+MIMI232 Oh and stop calling us "minorities" when the government only did that to deliberately NOT have to focus solely on the same former chattel populace they forced to build their economy. Anybody can be a fucking minority. White people are a "minority" in South Africa and always have been. White women are classified as a minority group here in the U.S., were deliberately classified as that to steal Affirmative Action benefits they knew were meant for attempting to make up for the legacy of chattel slavery since their men refused to enforce the 1866 treaty and the Special Order No. 15 and pay up compensations for the communities their men destroyed in their racist riots.. Stop calling us minorities when it is wrong and UNCONSTITUTIONAL to compare the Black Experience to other groups of color and the white women, all of whom did NOT fight in every war, did NOT suffer like Black people have, have been beneficiaries of Civil Rights legislation waaay more than Blacks, and that includes the profits accrued from chattel slavery. Stop calling us minorities when BLACK is an entirely different realm, classification, feeling, experience, and has legal, really old constructs (Bill of Rights, Civil War Amendments,. etc) and social and economic problems tied to what it means to be "BLACK". Black is not the fucking same as White women, Non Black LGBT, Hispanics (born above the border or born coming from below it), Arabs who are still enslaving and slaughtering Blacks, Asians and these Native American Mongoloids who also participated in Black genocide and enslavement who the Asians are genetically linked to. ... the BLACK experience also can't be compared to the so called "model minorities" like Hispanics and Asians who OUTNUMBER us, are majorities due to illegal immigration and high birth rates (unfair economic competition), and white women who have everything while Black people are a deprived and a truly afflicted group. We need to be stressing and emphasizing our exceptionality as a group and separating our selves Constitutionally because it's the law and historical reality. No other group was classified as three fifths human, denied the right to read and write, experienced their churches being bombed with little girls in them or being brutalized in their streets and denied reparations... Hispanics, Asians, White Women, Native Americans and every other asshole who has helped oppress Black people did NOT build America . It wasn't off of their backs why the U.S. even became an economic superpower. This very damaged and war torn "house" we're in, is still standing all because of the fact that Black people have been there at every pivotal moment. *BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT ONE IN THE SAME WITH ANYBODY ELSE. Don't you think the commercial was really saying the people of all hair types can hate their hair? I am a white woman who uses shea moisture products and love their products for my hair type. I don't think they were really trying to make it a racial thing more so as come try out product and finally love your hair no matter what type of hair you have.

Exactly, I have really dry hair and shea moisture really works for me but them saying that white women don't have issues with their hair is silly. The ad was clearly just trying to be more inclusive to more people with different hair types.

Carols Daughter did this same thing. It is called expansion of business. I know that a lot of black women made SM more widely known, but it is a product line that everyone used. Most got drawn in from the story on the back of the bottle. Unfortunately, there is just a disillusionment because of the ad. They felt like it was an exclusive black business, for black women. Clearly it is not.

Shea is trying to grow their brand. You GROW your business by appealing to NEW clients. One ad to white women does not constitute abandoning Black Women. I fear they are in a lose lose situation because of the victimhood mentality of too many black people. A simple fact black women commenting on this issue fail to realize is that while an individual black woman might spend more on hair care than an individual white woman, there are at least 5 times as many white women in America. it's sad to see the vast majority of our people always seeking an opportunity to cast themselves as victims. I guess the phrase "strong black woman " is really an oxymoron.

So to review: some people are pissed because a company is trying to expand their customer base? As brought up in the clip. If you feel that way of Shea, why not trip about the other companies only pushing out ads to get your coins ?

Jay Robin I don't think people are pissed about expanding but a lot of complaints about change in the product (which he is denying) also the things the women are saying in the commercial are FOS!

+Karismo O NO. The entire premise is wrong and minimizes the experience Black women go through with their hair on a global scale. I remember growing up my sisters dealing with the white and Latino racism in Arizona and then also the Black boys and their hair remarks, some of whom I had to fight because of their disrespect... It makes no sense to include women at all who don't know what this life is about, a problem their ancestors helped to create with their Eurocentric beauty standards in the first fucking place.

Basically what he said was, even though we've been skyrocketing our prices, we need more money to bring more product. Then you should have said that direct not subliminally through a damn national commercial

I love my Black people but we have a bad habit of protesting, boycotting, and being angry over simple things way too damn much. Every person who is upset about these ads needs to have purchased at least 3 bottles of theor products before getting in y'all feelings. Boycott him if he wasn't hiring Black people or if he never intended to sell to Black people. Other than that, leave this man alone and let him make money.

Sherman Dudley The black women speaking out are natural and have spent hundreds if not thousands on SM products over the years. The ladies with perms are just as confused as you are about the issue. Fun facts: the majority of folks he employs are white when women, Mitt Romney's Bain Capitol owns 49% of the company, and the formulas have changed to the point where a lot of the original customer base has stopped using SM hair products all together. Plus there are other natural hair lines available at supermarkets and drugstores that are 100% owned without the watered down white woman ingredients.

Funny you mention hiring Black people..his upper management in branding/marketing is mostly White. They started taking down their photos after people circulated the original pics. The company is full of White women.

May be I am an optimist, naive, stupid even....but what would be the benefit of discrediting Shea Moisture the company. How would it benefit the mainstream to take out a company that is demonstrating such massive growth amongst a consumer that has the highest purchasing power? Hmmm?

No need for any backlash... but this guy is trying to expand his coins and to let other ethnicities know that they too can use these products. I have seen a couple of all black shea moisture ads so I don't think he was trying to exclude black women in this ad but trying to find away to grasp the attention of other ethnic groups customers just like for years white owned hair care companies has became rich off many ethnic groups including black men and women.

Even though he meant it as a series..........THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST. The first AD you put out just marked your fate and rubbed people the wrong way. If you were really genuine about this, the first AD could have been released a lot later. The point is the front runner should have the black woman who has experienced the most hair hate!!!!!!!!

There were two major mistakes made here. Shea Moisture should not have released this snippet first! How could they have not anticipated the reaction? The second major mistake was using 3 white women in one snippet. Why not mix the races and hair textures up?. Have 1 white woman in each snippet if you want to add diversity but to not include any dark skinned women and or women with coarse hair was a bad decision. I refuse to believe that they weren't pressured to do so by white decision makers within the company. Very unfortunate.
