Our family has a house just up the road in Port Dufferin, and even smaller town; Sheet harbor is the "big town" we go to for all out needs. Rural communities are so important in a society. Sheet Harbour and Port Dufferin are delightful communities. Whenever we get there for the few weeks we stay everyone always asks us, "When did you get home." ; i.e. back to Port Dufferin. It is so beautiful, peaceful, and friendly!

I moved back home to Sheet Harbour 12 years ago. Unfortunately, in those 12 years, the Government has taken away lots of core services this small town needs to survive! I have seen the regression of this area because of that. We have lost our weekly court service, DFO office, and most recently our Community Services Dept. office just to name a few. It is sad to say, that this area is dying a slow death because of the lack of Government support, and because of the work force heading out West to look for work! This is a GREAT place if you are looking to buy cheap property to retire! But if you need to support your self with employment, then I am sorry to say, this is not the place for you....................

In 2021 I bought a little house in Liscomb, about 45 minutes away, I built 3 decks and bought all my materials from the home hardware in Sheet Harbour. very great owners and staff there…unfortunately there just wasn’t enough businesses to make it worth the drive for groceries etc for me.made more sense to drive the extra 10 minutes to Antigonish for groceries

Sheet Harbour Yes, a very beautiful part of the very beautiful Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia! Sadly, my parents are in their 70's and 80's and the region had more to offer during their time. A thriving hunting and fishing destination. Jobs at every corner which could support a family. More social activities than can be counted. While it is somewhat depressing to reminisce of what was, sadly we seem to be living in the sunset years of the baby boom. While it would be great if the eastern shore would see an economic resurgence, realistically I think we will be doing very well if we can keep our sole industry operating, that being health care! On the bright side, we have Taylor's Head beach! One the the best beaches in eastern Canada, and one of the few where you can be assured an empty beach on the nicest of weekends, although the frigid water temperatures may contribute to that. But hey, every few years the warm currents allow swimming all summer long! Not to mention the BEST coastal trails in Nova Scotia. Sheet Harbour is also the gateway to the archipelago! 100 of the most beautiful scenic island seascapes that can be found. Now if only we could make a good living from the coastal beauty that sits on our door step, we would all be set for life! Cheers.

If small towns lamenting stagnating economy/wages and/or loss of population want to change that trend, some sacrifices have to be made. Often small towns want all that good stuff but are unwilling to see the community change. If New York insisted on being the small trading post it was, it will never be the city it is today. Think about why one would go there? Is Sheet Harbour willing to open up to some development? Is it willing to live with substantial population influx? Or, dare I say, allow minorities or immigrants to come in to the community? Those can be real game changers, if the community has the resolve to handle the controversy and objection.

@@sfbluestar I can't believe your response! Why would a beautiful rural community want to be ANYTHING LIKE NEW YORK CITY!

great video, but what happened to the library , the gym. the C@p site , the discount store , Il Porto, the ice cream shack, Wilson's gas,,,,etc,,,,love Gammon's hardware, but we should be showing some of the other businesses here, that make life here so great! And the Port and inside the new nursing home, we have so much to enjoy. Let's show what we have, rather than dwell on what we don't have.

This is fan-fucking-tastic. It's all there. Everything we all need to remember about how we make Canada work. Stone Cold Steve Harper should have to look at this every day before he goes to work. But then it would only work if he had a heart and a brain--two things he proves he has not got every day he goes to work. But we count more than her does and this video shows us all exactly why. Congrats all around.
