After grabbing all three points in the Premier League on the weekend against Crystal Palace - the winning goal coming from John David Lundstram for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield side. We looked at how the Englishmen has set his side up and used overlapping centre backs effectively.
Sheffield United appointed Chris Wilder as their manager back in 2016 after sacking Nigel Adkins for finishing 11th in League One. Wilder took both League One and the Championship by storm, setting up in a 3-4-1-2.
Wilder and his coaching staff found the system needed a way to create overloads against opponents who sit in a deep block. The most common way to create an overload is through overlaps. Overlapping in a traditional sense takes place when you have two players on a flank - In a 4-4-2 the full back will run on on the outside of the winger, creating an overload and adding thrust into an attack.
Being on already four points in their first two Premier League games, Sheffield United have had a great start to the season. What will be interesting to see is how effective Chris Wilder’s back three system can be against the likes of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and the rest of the top six sides.
