Basically the sequel to our Do you NEED a Board Game Table!? video, because one of our friends bought the new and improved version of the Duchess called the Jasper! Made by BoardGameTables, they've accounted for the most popular features requested from board gamers when designing this table. There's a tabletop playmat surface for board game nights, and a topper made from 4 sections to transform into a normal table! Plus, there's removable cup holders so you don't spill drinks all over your favorite cards and board game pieces! The Jasper is also cheaper than the Wyrmwood Prophecy, but does that come at the cost of quality? Sort of, because there's definitely sidegrade features and not just pure upgrades going on. Still, it's designed specifically with us board game geeks in mind, so let's go over what we think!

I ended up going with a Wyrmwood MGT and one of the lucky ones to already have it. Seeing that wobble and the vault sticking up really has me appreciating their level of QA. It was also really easy to out together and everything was really snug. Their rail system is magnetic, so the cup holders and other accessories slot into the rail and can be taken out wherever. Still have to have a place to store them, buy I have a few Ikea kallax's near by storing boardgames so that's pretty easy. The two biggest downsides are that unless your going with their cheapest wood (maple) you'll easily be paying 2x or 3x the price, if not even more. They also are way behind in delivering to KS backers. If you pre order one now it might be like 2 years before they actually get through their backlog. Idk maybe they'll speed up production, but you'll still be waiting a while.

Oh man, 2 years! That's steep. I've been eyeing wyrmwood tables for a long long time, but really need to save up here ahaha. Their tabletop tiles really got me loving the magnets + wood combination. Cheers! -Ashton

How much did it cost you? I've looked at Wyrmwood before and it seems like even their cheapest version is in the 1,000s.

@@virtualworldaddict301 for their Modular Game Table, it really depends on the wood choice and the number of accessories and size. Mine is a medium sized table in cherry and was just over $3k for the table and all the accessories. Going for just a maple table with no accessories would have been $1k. So not cheap, but definitely less than their Prophecy table line that starts at $7k and quickly hits "new car" prices

I have the Origins Game Table…absolutely love it. Deep four inch recess for the gaming area means I can keep my games out with the topper over it and return to them undisturbed. Got mine from BBO Poker Tables and the customer service was amazing.

I have a 5'x3' dining room table from a furniture store. I ordered a neoprene mat from Board game tables in the same size. (Off of Amazon) Not the same as a board game table but I have had no complaints and I got my table, chairs and bench for $1000. And the mat was like $60.

I have a duchess as well……but I bought a Game Topper and now it sits on top of the Duchess…so I never play on it. My complaints for my duchess were (1) Neoprene mat did not fit (slightly too long) (2) table was banged up a little during mailing infact the package was darn near open whe I got it and there was visible knicks. (3) Topper is in two leaves and requires two people to remove (4) Yep cub holders are janky AF. Overall, I was happy with it but my game topper beats it in every category except for two. The well is deeper in the Duchess which I do like. My game topper sits on top of my duchess without the two leaves and it seems a tad bit high. I wish it was just a skoosh lower, but hey, you can’t always get what you want. Excellent review by Shelfside. You rock my friend.

Nice! My topper was a little dinged up, but I got a refund for it, so that w3sa awesome! The topper is so hard to remove, totally agree, and yep the cupholders are hilarious janky and you hear the jangle every time you move them. Will keep my eye out for game toppers it seems -Ashton

Great review! Is the double sided playmat purchased from BoardGameTables ? The ones listed in their site currently seem to be single sided and they seem to have their logo on them.

I'm very confused about the intended color of the dark walnut Jasper table. If you Google it you'll see pictures of everything from light brown to black. I know folks with the dark walnut Jasper, and it's espresso brown. Mine is straight-up black. The wood texture is also rougher than the smooth iterations I've seen in-person.... anyone else have experience with the Jasper 3.0? I agree with a 6.5/10 for the Jasper 3.0, which kind of hurts for $1600 including the topper.

Good review. I think for the price you get a perfectly decent table. You will need to spend WAYYYYYY more if you want better build and fit/finish.

The wood sliding on wood thing is fine. They are using a dove tail (trapezoid shape) joint to create a mounting system. Dove tail joints are very strong and used in quality cabinetry. Pro tip, rub a little wax onto the dovetail and it will slide much nicer.

That’s so strange. I have a jasper in the same finish and mine literally has no problems. The instructions were online which I preferred, and I built the whole table in less that 30 minutes. Not sure what was going on with this table but I love mine. Worth every single penny. Also, if your table is wobbly, try tightening up the bolts that secure the legs to the main frame. That fixes mine whenever it starts to wobble but I’m not sure if the Duchess is different.

Gotcha! Yeah I'm gonna turn the duchess facedown and tighten everything. My friend's customer service seems to be going well, so I think the end product won't be bad for him either. Just finished a game of Unfathomable on his table and thought it worked way better than my duchess overall. Cheers! -Ashton

Jasper took me 4.5 hrs to build. 1 hr trip to hard are store for new screws bc the domed ones are trash, and 3.5 hrs bc >80% of the predrilled holes didnt align properly. Printed Instructions are garbage.

Food crumbs can get through mine even when tight, so I cant imagine it would be immune to liquid.

I am more and more convinced that you gotta save up for the higher tier, like 2k-3k+. But then that's so so expensive, and maybe you could make your own! That being said, I have an absolute blast playing on my friend's jasper here, we just played Unfathomable over the weekend and it was so conveniently sized. -Ashton

I have a dutchess with a warped bottom under the neoprene mat. What didyou do to fix yours? How was that 3d printed piece used?

Ours is still extremely warped too, my friends' jasper seems to not have this problem as of yet because of the plywood being put in differently. I'm likely going to buy some new plywood at lowes/home depot, cut it to size, and also find a more secure way of screwing them into the frame. -Ashton

I really like the jasper table. Very hard durable wood too. I purchased mine Feb 2021. I had instructions to assemble. There was a minor defect in one of the accessories. I sent an email and they sent a quality replacement quickly with no questions asked. One thing I absolutely hate is the wine glass holder accessory. It’s extremely unsafe! Not worth using even once and I bought 3😨. Extremely frustrating as any child could even figure out the safety issues in about 2 seconds. The wine glass stem is designed to dangle in the holder right where your legs are moving about. If you adjust in your chair you can very easily knock into the stem and slice your leg wide open. Also a huge hazard if you have kids crawling around or pets that may bonk their head and break the glass. Honestly I liked everything except the wine glass holders that I’m 100% sure they know is an extreme safety issue. I’ll probably never buy anything from them again due to their lack of care/cash grab on the wine glass holders.

Just got around to looking at it! Looks pretty sweet, especially for the price. Those LEDS look very inticing ahaha.Only thing I didn't really like is the width of the border around the table- I think its slightly too big, and would get in the way of some of my games (Ahem TI4) I would strongly consider backing if I didn't already have a table! I would especially use the component/cup/phone holders, I hope you backed the package with those :) -Ashton

So uhh, my friend refuses to do a spillage test for some reason. But there is rubber inside the connections that really do look like they will prevent minor spills from going to the arena underneath -Ashton

just found your video, tip for stripped holes use some toothpicks and wood glue to fill the hole then re screw the hole

Other options is to purchase larger screws that can bite into the hole. Recommend a flat head so it doesn't stick above the plywood surface and cause a bump under the mat. That would cause a princess-and-the-pea situation!

I'm sorry about your quality issues. some of which is unacceptable at that price. However your friend will appreciate the 3 lids, leave crap on top, play on half, shove instruction manuals, stray meeples, under the covered end of the table. I have mentioned on another clip that i DIY'ed my game table. I spent big on materials, $2,000 AUS so that's about..... .$50 US. :P no cup holders. it's not a bloody car! There will be tables provided to put your drinks and bullshit on at my place. Get some PC gaming chairs, adjustable see, and can sleep through opponents turns!

The multiple lids are gonna be mad useful for him. I remember you talking about your table, man that's such a good deal. We're gonna be working on another similar vid in the future... but our other friend is bulding his own table!!! Wil be much fun. And I've been thinking about getting side tables for drinks/wallets as well, but that's because the cupholders fill up so fast! They kinda seem cheesy but are super useful for those crazy big games. Lumber isnt cheap, so even making your own will be costly (especially if you lack all the tools). But yea still way cheaper bc these tables are insane. But for anyone without a lot of woodworking and table building skills, the and result will be janky af guaranteed. The problem though is after spending $1300 it is still janky. Mine has seams 3 out of 4 corners on table, non-matching colored topper, and the predrilled holes were utterly worthless. So maybe I shouldve built my own.

Some games require a 6 by 3 play area ( Star Wars armada). Would these tables work for those kinds of games?

If I recall correctly, this is 5 feet by 3 feet, so it should work just fine. The arena may have it be a little hard to do some calculations, but then you can always put the topper on for a raised playing surface. For games like infinity, which I believe is bigger than 3 feet on one side, I've had some friends buy some wood to place on top of the table (which is kind of a pain, but does work). cheers! -Ashton

What price does the MGT start at? The Prophecy starts at a staggering $8500 and goes all the way up to $31,500.

I handmade a 59"x59" table that has a 2.5" deep railing that is 5.5" in width. And since the railing frames the entire playing surface, the cupholders are built directly into the railing. I used 4mm thick neoprene for the play surface which is 4ftx4ft. In all cost me about $300 and could easily be sold for $3000 if they are charging $1300+ for the Duchess lol.

as Evin said above, seems like the way to do it for cost efficiency is to build it yourself. But as long as the table fits your game, its all good! Everyting else like the cupholders is total bling -Ashton
