Thank you for explaining how opposing nuts take out backlash! Your demonstration of this was perfect and your camera work was awesome! I watched the Sherline factory video on this and read the factory instructions but couldn’t understand what was going on. Now I see what’s happening and understand how to adjust the system.

Wear and tear over time causes backlash, but I also think a lot of manufacturers are more concerned with getting products out the door as fast as they can ($$$), rather than spending a little more time machining items to fit. Mass production is only good to a certain extent. Wondering what the cost/time difference would be to machine ball screw threads as opposed to regular threads ?

These vids are fantastic. You mentioned last year that you were hoping to come out with more content. Any ETA on them (I know producing videos of this quality is a lot of work)? A video on Lathe QCTP would be nice. I have one and need to make a plate to distribute the forces across my cross slide.

The bushes inside the saddle are a (tightish) slip fit. A BBQ skewer is sufficient to push them out, though you might need a gentle tap to get past the face of the saddle.

Good video! Have you made one which explains adding DRO to one's lathe? I have them supplied on my used machine & did have instructions at one time . Can't seem to find them though. Thanks in advance. Keith Harrison.

I had about .0015 backlash on the X & Y axis when I first got my machines. Now it seems to be up to about .003. I suspect there's some wearing in going on, so will take some of that out. However the Z Axis on the mill is more like .005. I'm still learning just what I need to do if I want to lower the head a specific amount.

+James Thornton Thank you James for the details, I know I had more backlash then what was showing, but the grease I'd loaded on the lead screw was hiding it in the video. I made a quick tip video that might help you on lowering the head very specific amounts, not sure if it is exactly what you are needing or not... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNSDoNxzmrXLkXU.html

Your video above and the Sherline manual and videos show how to reduce backlash in the lathe slide (X axis) but not how to reduce it for the Y axis (for the 24" metric leadscrew). How do you reduce it for the long Y axis? Following their video on handwheel installation, I adjusted the handwheel control for the main leadscrew shaft (basically re-tightening the control on the post) as you would for an older frequently used machine, but this machine is new so it made no difference (did not work loose in the first place). Technically, the end play comes out to be .008 mm (8 increments) which is at the end range of acceptable for Sherline so I didnt want to get with the company yet assuming they will say to just live with it. Any info will be greatly appreciated...
