This film reversed the almost century-old film revision of Watson as a bumbler/comedic relief (originally popularized by Nigel Bruce's portrayal) into a competent assistant to Holmes like he is in the Conan Doyle novels.

@HQ he isn’t an idiot, he just doesn’t take extra information which is unlikely for him to use like solar system or one other topic, he believes that mind doesn’t have elastic mind which can store infinite amounts of information and that every extra information will replace the already present memory in his mind…but u see he is an expert in things which would be important for him like study of poisons, chemistry, different types for cigarettes, different types of soil, physics, politics, self defense I.e boxing, sword fight etc etc…

It’s implied that since Blackwood performed all the rituals perfectly, that there really was a supernatural force he was summoning or doing the rituals to. And that the devil got his due by causing a perfect chain of events that would ultimately claim Blackwood’s life as he was owed his soul

Though I love what Nigel Bruce did for Watson back the 1940's Sherlock Holmes film series, he ultimately changed the trajectory for the character for almost a century until this movie returned the character to his more novel-authentic roots. Watson was basically a bumbler and comedic relief instead of a useful assistant to Holmes.

@@shaonbiswas7644 If you read my comment you'd know that I was saying in the novels he's quite competent. It's only in the 1940's Basil Rathbone series of films that he was portrayed as a bumbler. This personality stayed consistent until the 2009 film finally broke the status and returned the character closer to his novel roots.

This has to be one of the best opening sequences I have seen in any movie. It wastes no time in setting up the main characters, including the villain, and it provides some great action while showing what this take on Sherlock can do.

SPOILER (AS IN ABSOLUTELY DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU'VE WATCHED THE FULL MOVIE): My guess with this woman and the other women who were killed rather than Black Magic was an effect of drugging and hypnotism, her grabbing the dagger might be a build-in suggestion over months or just from him repeating his chants over and over again till she'd do just about anything. We never got an explanation for it, but looking back on it in light of Holmes's later explanations behind Blackwoods work, that seems the most logical explanation. As Holmes so, "there was never any magic, only conjuring tricks", and hypnotism and hallucinatory drugs count as conjuring tricks.

According to actual hypnotists you can't make an individual do something they don't want to do. So if it was hypnosis the girl must have had suicidal tendencies for it to work, which ofc could be possible. Then again hypnosis is seldom portrayed accurately in movies.

Its a wonderful dynamic, the majority of the world views Watson as the more impressive. A decorated soldier and medical doctor, but Watson understands that Holmes is the brilliant one.

The Custodian Helmet is the headgear traditionally worn by male police constables and sergeants while on foot patrol in England and Wales. Officers of all ranks in most forces are also issued a flat, peaked cap that is worn on mobile patrol in a vehicle. Ranks above sergeant wear the peaked cap only. However, some Inspectors wear the Custodian Helmet, but with two silver bands around the base (to match the two pips worn as rank insignia) to denote their position. Claimed by some sources to have been based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army, it was first adopted by the London Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the "stovepipe" top hat worn since 1829. In 1863, the Metropolitan Police replaced the previous uniform of white trousers, swallow-tailed coat and top hat in favour of very dark blue trousers, a more modern button up tunic and the early type of helmet which had an upturned brim at the front and a raised spine at the back, running from the bottom to the top of the helmet, which became known as the "cockscomb".

A glass spike, very fragile as Sherlock demonstrated, but also wickedly sharp. Blackwood was going to stab him through the eye with it, and it would have looked like another of his 'magic' tricks.

Fun fact: the idea that Holmes and Watson were a team is actually a film creation and was never in the books. In the original stories, Watson actually ran a medical practice and only occasionally accompanied Holmes on his cases.
