Blackwood was his Lex Luthor and Moriarty was his General Zod. One representing his inverse, and the other his natural abilities used for evil purpose. Blackwood showed him the complicated world of superstition, magic and mysticism, things that Holmes naturally considers untrue until he uses the very same method to unravel the plan. Moriarty on the other hand played the same game but showed Holmes what happens when someone uses their kind of genius for personal gain at the expense of quite literally everything else

This is my favorite trope. The protagonist willingly jumps into the deep end without a lifeline. Basically, with their friends, family, etc completely cut out they have no distractions and are more determined. Thus going into going into a dark place, risking their life and sanity to get the job done.

The best part, he says in the movie that playing a certain set of notes creates order out of chaos for a the flies making them fly in a synchronous pattern that can be predicted. That looks like an amazing drug trip. Sherlock Holmes was a cocaine addict so nothing is out of possibility. They sure as hell didn't keep that part in the movie though because I doubt people would like seeing Robert Downey Jr. doing Coke

Holmes was never an addict. He only used "artificial stimulants" when he had no cases to work on and no problems to solve to the point when life became dull. When the world gave him the mental stimulation he needed, he was able to dispense with his morphine and cocaine immediately.

Something a lot of people dont realize is how alike tony stark as a character and RDJ's portrayal of both men are similiar. THey use every tool at their dispoasle as a resource every thing. Even here holmes is playing his reversed chromatic scale that he used originally to create order out of the seeming random chaos of the flies flight pattern, and now hes using it to try and create order out of the entire case
