The line is great, but I think it's still partly wrong. They are very much gay, sure, but (at least) Sherlock is also asexual. Great video!

And don't forget, Holmes' and Watson's relationship has been interpreted romantically and sexually for almost as long as the stories have been in print (as have Holmes and Moriarty). Some of the Sherlock Holmes pastiches of the 20's-50's are good examples of gay subtext sneaking past censorship.

"Very different was the reward of the true love of Achilles towards his lover Patroclus-his lover and not his love (the notion that Patroclus was the beloved one is a foolish error into which Aeschylus has fallen, for Achilles was surely the fairer of the two, fairer also than all the other heroes; and, as Homer informs us, he was still beardless, and younger far)." -Plato's Symposium. The Iliad is the closest to canon of all the Tumblr slash magnets you list. Plato agrees.

Yasmine Djenaoui no sherlock is hella queerbaiting--actually it teases relationships between sherlock and multiple characters to engage the audience, but that doesn't change the fact the queer subtext is cynical pandering with no promise of a resolution (going on what moffat and others have said).
@fatimagic13658 жыл бұрын
+Scorpia161 i completely agree with this comment. as much as i love johnlock, i know enough to admit that sherlock isn't a "gay" show, it's queerbaiting and it knows it. the show panders to it's slash enthusiast fanbase the same way supernatural does--by pointing the 'haha look they're soooo gay but not!11!!!' card and expecting pats on the back for legitimate representation.

the last thing you said says it all. Sherlock is a very good show. I started to ship Johnlock in 3x02 and I was already obsessed with the tvshow at that point, even when I saw them as friends, very odd friends but friends, but people keep believing every fan watches the bloody show because of the gay subtext. Great video! I definitely don't have a problem with your identification of Irene as a lesbian; she clearly self-identifies as gay, and her conversation with John at Battersea which is essentially "I'm not gay" "Well, I am gay, and we're both in love with a guy so" is so important because it shows the fluidity of sexuality. If anyone is interested in this topic, check out TJLC Explained, which focuses in depth on Johnlock and why the writers of Sherlock decided to make the choices they have.

I believe Sherlock's Pansexual, so I'm not oppose to the idea of Sherlock liking John. Sherlock just likes who he likes. Irene Adler was a dominatrix to show a new side of power. Sherlock's afraid of sex, Irene being a dominatrix shows her power and control over sex and Sherlock's fear. Irene Adler shows control over Sherlock in every way, she beat him both intellectually and physically. This is what attracts her to him. As for her being a lesbian who falls in love with a man, I think it shows the grey area of sexuality. In the scene where Irene and John are talking, John says he's not gay, Irene says she is. Irene then says " Look at us both" I interpreted his as her saying "Neither of us usually like men, but we're both in love with Sherlock" From what I can tell, Sherlock is in love with John and Irene (Pressure point list)

I'm not going to pretend that women are handled well in Sherlock because most of the time they are not. BUT netiher are the men. Say what you want about Lestrade or Mycroft or Moriarty but at the end of the day, the only two characters this show really cares about are John and Sherlock. Everyone else is secondary and are often written as mirrors for the central duo. Ash Moffat and Gatiss have said numerous times: it's the Sherlock and John show.

@belpop9 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I think SPN is VERY slashy for sure, but Sherlock and John are surrounded with every romantic trope in the book. Of course, I believe that BBC Sherlock is going to actually canonize Johnlock. Like, I think they actually are building toward that after S3. SPN is just queerbaiting.
@jomoody7989 жыл бұрын
Kelli Pope The thing for me with spn is that it is slashiest not in purpose, but because the actors... misha and jensen, jensen and jared, jared and misha, but especially jensen and misha just... u know but sherlock is slashy on purpose
@belpop9 жыл бұрын
I think they're both slashy on purpose. Spn creators have admitted to teasing the destiel thing because a lot of people like it. But they obviously won't go anywhere with it. As for sherlock, the creators SAY that johnlock won't happen. However, they're liars. And the big difference there is that while the SPN people admit to playing with the chemistry between Dean and Cas on purpose, the Sherlock creators deny its even there. Which is just completely ridiculous and an obvious lie. Which makes me think that their denial of future canon johnlock is also a lie. At this point, the series doesn't even make sense without johnlock, the same can't be said for SPN. The slash is there, but the narrative itself still makes sense without it. At this point, BBC Sherlock has essentially become these two men separated and pining over each other. The level of angst makes no sense outside of a romantic story. It's a classic romantic trope.

I have only a vague memory of them but I think even some of the stories had tints of that. Now it might just be looking at old literature through the lens of the modern world but there did seem to be something of that and I can recall, even when I was in middle school, the topic coming up with some older kids (no idea why). Half them were convinced that Sherlock and Watson were secretly gay lovers the other not. I honestly have no idea why that even came up given this was the mid to late 80's (give or take).

I completely agree about Mary. Amanda does an awesome job for sure, but Mary is completely set up to be a villain. This show was never made to be some happy triad. It's about John and Sherlock. Everyone and everything else is secondary. Though I do wonder how they will resolve the baby issue. I mean it was clearly brought in as a plot device to keep John with Mary after she tried to kill Sherlock, but going forward...it's my headcanon that the baby is David's.
@ameliemileva64599 жыл бұрын
Kelli Pope So a friend and I had this theory that Mary is the real "Sebastian Moran". There were several signs and the most obvious is of course that she wasn't that surprised when Moriarty came back. Since Moriarty x Moran is, in our Fandom, a totally legit ship...I bet Johnny would sacrifice her to whatever is going to happen if the baby was little Moriarty. So either she is going to lose the baby, she dies with it or it's not Johns. But I'm sure Sherlock and John did find out things about here in the time before the Christmas scenes. I hope they will show it. I hope there will be Johnlock. I'm a bit too optimistic there I guess xD
@fatimagic13658 жыл бұрын
Hi, Rantasmo. I love your show, but this is actually one of the episodes I disagree with you on. To be clear, I love Sherlock, and Johnlock is one of my otps. That said, I think they're a clear example of queer baiting. The show basically runs on the idea of John and Sherlock's relationship being "gay but not", and their sexualities (including Irene's) being the punch line of a gag or joke. The writers have made it very clear that Johnlock will never be involved in a sexual relationship in canon, and as a shipper, I've accepted that. But by saying it will never happen and continuing to make jokes about it, the writers are being quite disrespectful to a fanbase that doesn't get a lot of representation as it is. The head writers saying that Johnlock will never happen off-screen does not negate how they are being presented on-screen, in a jokingly queer context. That, and John and Sherlock's canonical relationship has caused a lot of sexism towards characters like Irene and Mary in the fandom, which is never okay. That said, I've always headacanoned Sherlock as gay, John as bi, and Irene as a biromantic lesbian. So I totally get your point about her. Keep up the great analysis! :)

Actually I had a somehow silmilar realtionship with my best friend, like John and Sherlock have. You know.. deepest friendship ever and sometimes it gets a bit..strange. A friend can become something like a partner. A friend can be the most important person in your life and you can love him more than anything, beyond friendship, but without loving that person in a romantic way. I would have done anything for her, like John does for Sherlock. Our friendship was still very similar to a real relationship and thats why we actually had a break up... I think it's kind of the same with "Johnlock"

What I don't understand, for all those stating that the show is queerbaiting, is why an openly gay man (Mark Gatiss) would entertain such a thing. It makes no sense, and why waste so much of the show doing it? Wouldn't that just cause the show to lose viewership eventually, because, let's face it, a large percentage of BBC Sherlock fans watch it on the chance that Sherlock and John will eventually bang (yes, even if it's off-screen).
@JeiFaeKlubs8 жыл бұрын
+C Carter I don't think it's queerbating at all. Sherlock (to me and another kind of large part of the fandom) is 100% asexual and potentially aromantic. John... not sure. Maybe he's bi but can't accept that. What they have is a very deep friendship, and one we don't often see in TV shows. You could call their relationship "queerplatonic". They love each other, but in no romantic or sexual way. I'm usually all for shipping characters, but in this case I'd hate the writers if they turned an asexual character into a sexual one.
@Tarotiste8 жыл бұрын
+JeiFaeKlubs The thing is, they've never said that Sherlock is asexual. The only thing we know for sure is what we are shown onscreen. Mrrs Moffat and Gatiss have repeatedly stated that they will occasionally lie in interviews when it suits them because otherwise it would ruin the suspense of the show, so their statements cannot be taken as fact. In fact, they have often said things that completely contradict previous statements. We do know that Sherlock is not straight- he says he's not into women. He doesn't get more specific than that. He could be asexual, demiromantic, gay but not actively dating because it messes with "the work"... we don't know. I think the show has made it pretty clear over the last couple of episodes that he is some sort of variety of gay, and maybe he's even having trouble dealing with it (he spends quite a bit of time fantasizing during his drug trip of Moriarty doing very sexual things- which could be disturbing or could just be his mind trying to process it.) What I like about the show either way is that they are slowly growing this relationship within the bounds of the overall plot of the show- it's not an incidental silly thing that "oh they're gay" and they're screwing in episode one... with very little actual thought given to their character arc... like most heterosexual couples would get. If they do get together, this will be ground breaking... for a worldwide hit to choose to have Sherlock and John be a gay couple? That would truly be huge. I hope they do, it's time that more young people can look at heroes in the media and say.. I can identify with them... and they're actually a HERO not just an incidental character thrown in who really doesn't even matter.
@cc35798 жыл бұрын
+Tarotiste I couldn't have said this better myself, and I completely agree. Moffat did say in an interview once that Sherlock is not asexual, he just abstains from sex. Of course he follows that up with he likes women, but all the evidence points to 'yeeeeah, how about no.' Whatever they do, though, I think that they will lie about it until the very moment it happens, so we can't be sure what the endgame is here. Though, I sincerely hope that they weren't just fucking around this whole time focusing complete episodes around this relationship arc. That would be terribly... terrible. Sorry, I actually forgot what I was going to put there lol.
@neuralmute8 жыл бұрын
+C Carter There's also the option that when Moffat said that Sherlock likes women, he simply refrained from mentioning that he also likes men just as much. Let's not forget about bisexuality, pansexuality, and everything else out there!
@cc35798 жыл бұрын
+neuralmute Of course! Great point, and one I think is being overlooked. I would think that Sherlock would refrain from conforming to any kind of label. Also, Moffat is a master of giving ambiguous answers to straightforward questions.

Adler is not 'a lesbian in love with a man'. She's not 'homosexual'. Adler is bisexual: she's introduced as having had affairs with both men and women and she refers several times to having male clients (and knowing what they like). My guess is that when John says says he's not gay and Adler replies 'Well, I am', it's a) because bisexuality isn't acknowledged on TV and b) because she's being ironic - because she's saying 'Well, I AM attracted to my own gender... and Sherlock, so who cares if you're not gay?' (It's also the case that people who identify as bi *frequently* call themselves gay or let other people round up. Corrections and explanations are sometimes too much work.) I love you, Rantasmo, but bisexual erasure - please don't enforce it.
@rantasmo9 жыл бұрын
I would argue that Adler having sex with men doesn't necessitate that she be sexually attracted to men, and that sexual identity is (in most cases) best judged by the way people self-identify as opposed to their observable behavior. And if Adler is gay (which is the only term used in the script to describe her orientation), that does not even necessarily preclude her from being romantically or sexually attracted to men (see also kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJtohpt5u8ion4U.html).
@thegabrielhyde9 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's certainly true that her identifying herself (or being identified) as gay/lesbian doesn't preclude attraction to men - but in that case, the 'Lesbians don't fall in love with men' argument falls apart.
@rantasmo9 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't feel that depicting a lesbian falling in love with a man is automatically a problem, so long as the story handles it with the proper nuance, and I think it's debatable whether or not Sherlock does so.

***** Irene Adler said herself she's gay. I think what she was meaning is that sexual orientation is not that delimited and that anything can happen.

+Alex Gabriel Steven Moffat doesn't think too much about the bisexual community. His poor treatment of the character of Jane in his show Coupling has proven that and he has openly stated that "bisexuals are too busy having sex to watch TV" so they don't need representation, according to him. Needless to say, I have a tricky relationship with Mr. Moffat.

In my opinion Sherlock needs more A... You know... Asexuality... A lot of the world needs more A. Yeah... Just saying, the character of Sherlock Holmes is one of the very few, actually decent and interesting characters who is, by Word of God, asexual (at least according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes). So whenever I personally see people take the character of Sherlock Holmes in all of his ace glory and make him straight... It slightly upsets me... Him being gay I suppose bums me out a little less, though I don't exactly know why... In any case... The ace community... We need some cool characters to represent us... Please? Can we at least have Sherlock... Please?

I wouldn't necessarily argue that Irene Adler is "nothing like the book counterpart". I'd say she fits very well into Gatiss and Moffat's modern retelling of the stories. Keep in mind, the original Irene Adler is notable for 3 things: 1) She had a reputation as "an adventuress" so scandalous that being in a picture with her would spell certain disaster for your career and social life. These days... there are only two types of shared pictures that could be scandalous (proof of collusion and proof of sexual deviance), and only one gives her the equivalent personal agency of "an adventuress". 2) She was "the woman who beat Sherlock Holmes", if only because she was clever enough to know when to get out of Dodge while keeping what she wanted away from Holmes. According to "The Five Orange Pips", Holmes had only ever been outsmarted by 3 men and 1 woman; the fact that ANY woman defeated him intellectually is the only reason why A Scandal in Bohemia is memorable for many. 3) Sherlock refers to her only as "THE Woman" as a sign of mutual respect - which is exactly the reason so many people have shipped them over the years. The Conan Doyle version of Sherlock was kinda sexist in general in many stories, noting several unflattering qualities as exactly the reason why he could never find them distracting... so the fact the he found ONE distracting is noteworthy (at least, back in the time when discussion of homosexuality ranged from "unmentionable" to "punishable by law"). The Conan Doyle original version of Sherlock was not as overtly antisocial as the Moffat/Gatiss version (although he still had several moments of throwing shade), so Irene would need to lose an equal amount of subtlety in order to gain and retain that level of respect. Yes, she's overtly sexualized but... that's kinda the *point*. She's explicitly referred to as a professional Dominatrix - she doesn't simply sleep around or show "tasteful" cleavage for the camera, she literally makes it her day job to use her body to get what she wants from people. She is *very* upfront about what she does and enjoys, and weaponizes the fact that it makes people uncomfortable just as much as she uses it for titillation.

Rantasmo needs to redo this video to include the disappointment of the last series. There’s something insulting about feeding off your fan base’s slash moment, but never fulfilling anything. A tease for tease’s sake

i tried to research that part about slash being prohibited in china and I come up empty. can someone refer me to where rantasmo gets this from? I haven't found any chinese law against homosexuality per se
@fairuzachan10 жыл бұрын
Yes I was wondering about that too. Source please? :) In China, homosexual sex isn't illegal since 1997 but homosexuality was dropped from the list of mental illnesses only in 2001. (info is part of a paper I wrote for uni, fyi)

sídhe wen MintoBastet Homosexuality itself is legal, but gay erotica authors can and have been arrested for "spreading obscene material." www.pinknews.co.uk/2011/03/21/32-chinese-women-arrested-for-writing-gay-erotica/

Do you think that it is mostly queerbaiting or playing up the gay as a joke? Or do you think it can be read as a legitimate part of the character development?
@Nectarisa10 жыл бұрын
I think it's just a part of the characters portraying actual love for each other. Though it may not be sexual in nature, it is an intense bond, and such an intense bond could be so easily seen in other lights.

"From the Avengers, to Harry Potter, to the freaking Illiad-" have... have you ever read the Illiad. Not that I blame anyone who doesn't realize how much gay stuff went on in it, since history has tried its DARNDEST to straight-wash it and erase all the homosexuality out. Ever seen a Troy-themed movie with Achilles and his ""close friend/cousin"" Patrocles? They were not close friends/cousins.

The fact that Alexander the great was obsessed with it should actually tip some people off the fact that it's fairly gay.
