We need another LONG video where you have many alpaca, llama, and/or sheep to shear. You're just too quick and it's over before we know it. lolol I'll bet those animals just love the breeze on their skin once the fleece is off of them. Until next time, stay safe and well to both of you.

@dotcassilles1488

Usually sheep are shorn once a year. Some farmers like to get their sheep shorn every 6 months. I guess it just depends on what breed of sheep you have and what the wool is going to be used to make once it's off the sheep. Wool can be different strengths depending on length, thickness of each individual fibre and how many crimps (waves or zigzags) there are in it. Look up "Merino" breed of sheep to find information on what fleece is used to make most clothes (socks, scarves, jumpers, thermals). If you want to see a freaky picture look up "the big merino, Goulburn" its a large sculpture of a Merino ram that contains a shop that sells everything made from Merino wool including soft toys, blankets and doonas/comforters. The statue was originally designed to celebrate how much of the surrounding area was financially successful due to being ideal growing conditions to make superfine Merino wool.

Thank you for mentioning why belly wool gets discarded. I nevr really knew why and just supposed it was because it was extra dirty/mussed from being laid on all the time, but that seemed like a weird reason since wool gets cleaned so I figured there had to be something else involved. Now I know!

Its like when my cat leads me to things he wants. XD Also now that I bought a fleece straight from the sheep I understand a little bit of what you're saying. So those teeny tussocks I keep throwing out are second cuts, and the extremely coarse bits I'm turning into rug yarn are from the belly. They are light grey, and the fleece slowly turns from light grey at the bottom to grey, to black with some sun lightened brown tips at the top. I didn't throw away what I could salvage of the coarse bits because they looked like they could take the coreopsis flower dye I was working with. And I was right. The sheep also has SOME locks in its fleece whoever he or she was. I didn't know that you needed to find out if the fleece was skirted or not and had to do that messy bit by hand. Its pouring outside right now though, and I have a tar beach roof, so I laid out the remaining unwashed fleece to get a rinsing in the rain.

Neps! I’m not sure what other regions call those little balls if short fiber. Slubs are fiber that doesn’t draft out. Usually I blame vm for it. Shetland is my absolute favorite sheep breed.
