The Rising of the Shield Hero is the next big isekai anime to start off 2019! But is it truly setting the bar high for trapped in another world stories or is it just riding the train to its inevitable derailment?

I have to say, that your video was very clearly made with huge effort. It's easy to look at and entertaining from beginning to end. The use of different pictures from Isekai anime and explanation of what they are generally about is useful to understand what they are like for those who haven't watched them or to make it clear to those who haven't thought about their nature before. Your criticism seems objective and trustworthy. Although your criticism of Isekai using the same tropes over and over again is sound, it can be made for any genre. There are a lot of tropes that are completely overused. But it's difficult to create something that hasn't been there before, since entertainment exists since the dawn of time. Furthermore The problem with creating something new is very risky. Anime and Manga are created to earn profit. So, as long as the majority of customers are not visibly fed up by the overuse of themes (and this has to show itself in the numbers, otherwise it's irrelevant), this trend of using the same old tropes will continue. So, I'm of the same opinion as you generally, but I also see, why reality is not as it should be (being on topic here lol). Your criticism is still relevant and I believe that, if enough people see videos like this, they might have second thoughts in supporting this trend. PS: the only thing I could criticize about you video itself in a "bad" way is, that you should speak a bit more clearly. I myself could understand you, since I'm very used and good at English, but I believe that other non-native English speakers would appreciate the change. Everything else is top notch. On your question at the end of the video: I'm right there with you on Konosuba being an exceptionally good show. Unfortunately, it, together with Re:Zero, were the only Isekai I've enjoyed without frustration.

As an Isekai nut, I can certainly say plenty of what you mentioned in this video is actually pretty accurate to the more boring isekai’s and it seems like some at least are starting to stray from the video game concept, although I will also note that Re:Zero does also keep away from the video game mechanics mostly with the only real exception being Return by Death itself and I do feel it does come off as more unique in many of its places (still medieval inspired but not all that generic either.) Mishoku Tensei (or Jobless Reincarnation) also does well to avoid a lot of isekai tropes even to the point that while Rudeus is certainly a shift and complication to the world, the world doesn’t focus around him. I would also recommend that series for a good unique Isekai. I’ve always claimed you can do an OP MC under the right circumstances, but you really need to get the idea right usually by keeping a goal from them or doing something more like How Not to Summon a Demon Lord and be more of a comedy show. (Yea it’s not a “great” show but I enjoy it mostly because it’s mostly dumb fun.) Here’s to hoping that we can get some more unique Isekai characters like Subaru, Naofumi, Kasuma and Rudeus from Mishoku Tensei.

This video is great. This really explains why I'm so tired of isekai :/ the lack of originality. You can watch/read 3 isekai genre stories and you can practically predict the plot of other isekai stories out there.

3:47 You don't get Kirito. 6:47 I mean you really don't get Kirito. 9:32 Because it didn't do anything meaningful or worthwhile with that premise. 13:17 REEEEEEEEEEEAALLY don't get Kirito. At all.

From what i've heard, Kirito in LN had much more substancel and character, but everything waa cut out in anime.

Maybe he's more well developed in the LN, I don't know for sure! I haven't personally read it so I am just judging anime Kirito and in my opinion, he is thinly written.
