I've been using an Alfine 11 for 18,000km (2 years) in all weather, primarily as a commuter. I would have replaced 4-5 cassettes, 4-5 chains and 2 chainrings, in that period, but have only just changed the rear cog ($6), used two chains and 2 chainrings, in the same period. Yes, it would be a little heavy for a road racer, where lifespan is sacrificed for weight saving. Don't forget that there is also one less shifter, cable, derauler and chainring. No rear derauler to damage on a MTB.

After many years without a single problem having used the 8-speed hub on my bike, since a year use the 11-gear Shimano Alfine, together with disk brakes and belt. Actually is perfect altogether, very convenient, clean and really durable. Another excellent job Shimano🚲👍👌

Olá Coloquei na minha Dahon Speed TR - 2009., o Shimano Nexus 8, que pretendo usar no Caminho de Santiago no ano que vem e mais alguns países da Europa. Excelente, pois com apenas 8 marchas, resolve o que se precisa em uma viagem de cicloturísmo. É claro que não é para MB ( ainda, porque o Nexus 14, dizem os experts que será ). E resolve o maior problema de cicloturista, ou seja, proteger o câmbio traseiro, pois como é embutido no cubo, fica completamente protegido. Um abraço

Yes indeed, if you take care of the bike almost after every ride then you only need about 10 mins each time, dust needs to stay longer in order to make damage, if you get rid of it fast then there is no damage. My road bike has about 25k km in almost 2 years and it performs like brand new.

i have an alfine8 and pretty happy. rode it throughout the whole winter with snow n salt.. about 3000km are on it now. and still no service needed. it shifts still fine.. cheap normal gearsets have half the lifespan of an Alfine8 in our conditions here. Maybe ill add a crank mounted Schlumpf gears system with two speeds later.

You can have both. Check out the Zerode G1 frame. It uses an Alfine hub as a gearbox to get an ultra high pivot and to reduce unsprung weight.

Aqui na minha cidade o de 3 marchas custa 250 reais, o de 8 custa 800 e o de 11 eu não sei. Mas são câmbios para bikes de cidade, não são para estrada ou mountainbike.

O mais curioso era que esse tipo de cambio trocava as marchas ao girar uns dez gráus (10º) aos pedais para traz. Caso ouvesse eroo se quebrava o mecanismo interno. Era uma especie de "embreagem" sendo acionada.

it's basically the same principle that drills have when you switch from high speed to high torque... it engages or skips from one satelital set to the next... that's all the magic.

A única vantagem que eu vejo é a durabilidade do sistema que por ficar selado não sofre agressão por partícula de sujeira, mas imagino que seja mais pesado que o sistema convencional. Penso que seja bom para bicicletas motorizadas ou motonetas.

Even if you only value your time at $10/hour and spend 3 hours a week taking care of your chain, you would have been better off replacing the chain each week. Bikes that need less maintenance are really important.

Actually the Alfine 11 is considered pretty reliable. Maybe not Speedhub or Nuvinci reliable, or even SA 3-spd, but better than, say, an SA 8-speed or Nexus 7.

Sturmey Archer used to make these in England over 40 years ago, they had a small chain to select one of three gears and were unreliable, as kids we used to strip and rebuild them for people all the time. The drive pawls were notorious for chipping the points off and the pawl springs would break resulting in crushed nuts for the rider when it slipped gears. This version should result in more serious testicle injuries as the rider will be able to travel much faster on this version. LOL

actually it is in production for years. probably it is not for racing or for mountain bikes, more for a commuter.

I'm an all season commuter, who knows how to maintain a bike, but doesn't have the time and doesn't want to put up with problems like cassettes clogged with packed snow. I'm afraid that derauler systems, have discouraged a lot of people from using bicycles. I had assumed by "clean" that you actually cleaned with solvent, rather than just wipe the grit off, as I do. I agree, that an IGH, like the Alfine, isn't suitable for a road racing bike, where light weight trumps service life.

4-5 cassettes and the same amount of chains plus chainrings for only 18k kilometers? This means that you never lubed or cleaned your chain. I ride a road one with over 24km for 2 years and have only changed my chain once.But i clean and lube almost 3-6 times a week. Cleaning your bike is really important.
