I like that Nocturne is hard, but the main BS is the stuff outside of battles - having to walk through the same big areas over and over because not all save points let you teleport, unskippable teleport/save/ladder scenes (they get super old super fast), lack of skill tooltips in all menus, lack of indication of level requirements for magatama skills, etc. SMT4/4A might not have the great battles of Nocturne, but damn, it feels better to play because you can focus on fighting the demons, not also fighting the UI/camera/unknown.

getting ambushed by random battle then got mahamaon / mamudoon on first turn by the enemy still traumatized me to this day.

SMT changed my life. There's no true good or evil just perspective.

I started with P5 last December and the combat got me hooked it was so much fun being able to actually exploit an enemy’s weakness and then do the same for me. I get P5 is one of, if not the easiest in the franchise and I see how it was, but that has me excited for some form of a challenge in nocturne when it gets localized,

Got into Persona last year in August, finally on my way to mainline with the SMT III Remaster. Just got to Ikebukuro and this is my thoughts exactly- this game has BS difficulty sometimes, but the BS goes both ways, and that's amazing. You can make the enemies CRY in Nocturne, and it's hilarious, but you're forever humbled in it. Plus it's got the PS2-era JAMS, I don't know what it is about Nocturne, but it makes me feel like I'm playing a JRPG version of Symphony of the Night, with its beautiful OST and all.

SMT games are pretty fair with their difficulty. Sometimes there's BS in Nocturne, but most of its difficulty has a rhyme and a reason. It's part of why I love this series, and find it difficult to go back to any Final Fantasy games. I can carve my own way through the game while playing by its rules, and end battles quickly depending on my efficiency rather than dealing with slow, boring tedium. It's also more mature than those other JRPG's. No good or evil. Just what you make of the different alignments. It's for the player to decide the lesser of many evils.

Great video! Nocturne's combat is definitely a gold standard for the genre, but one of the most underrated things about it, imo, is it's story. It isn't as character or plot focused as Persona or Final Fantasy. But it isn't trying to be. Nocturne is more about mood and philosophical questioning. Honestly, it's kind of like Shadow of the Colossus in that way. Obviously, if you come in expecting Persona style character development and social links, or a high-action plot like Chrono Trigger, you'll be disappointed. But if you come in with an open mind, the game is so powerful. It's honestly one of my favorite stories in the genre.

Matador still kicks the 💩outta me. Every single time I always underestimate him like "He's not even that good in Persona" and then he proceeds to annihilate me over and over while I try to build accuracy buff demons and grind lvls.

Imo Nocturnes actual difficulty comes from how people underestimate buffs in every other game. Nocturne is my favorite despite the fact that 4 and 4a arguably have much better combat Honestly the PS2 era megaten games are the only ones I truely love despite the rest still being good games.

I was hoping you'd actually talk about the encounter system a bit when you mentioned it in the transition to how Press Turn worked. The random encounter system in Nocturne and by extension Strange Journey is easily the best I've ever seen. The fact that you actually get some forewarning of when a fight will happen alone helps so much but also making it take 3 dings to get an encounter created (in my opinion) the perfect encounter rate. Given how wary most people below a certain age are about random encounters I imagine this would probably be a pretty effective way to convince people to at least give Nocturne a try. Certainly a far cry from SMT1 giving you double or triple encounters every few steps. Great video overall!

I’d consider myself a Persona fanboy, and I’m hella excited for SMT 3 and if I enjoy SMT 3 when I get it then I’m definitely gonna get SMT 5.

My new hope is that the Digital Devil Saga duology will get an HD remaster as well. They were (I believe) the first games post nocturne to have the Demi-fiend take his rightful place as multi-dimensional mega-boss. Who WILL sometimes just fuck you over with Gaea's Rage to one shot your party. And you BEST believe he's summoning Grimikimala

Great video, SMT Nocturne is one of the most unique JRPGs out there. So it makes it hard for me to tell my friends to play SMT or even the newest SMT game. But I love this series so much and you put it in such a beautiful and easily explainable way

Everything that Atlus did after this game except maybe original Persona 3, has been straying further and further from the press turn system, and battle symmetry. Once you say its symmetrical, but... thats when you messed up. I was happy to see in Persona 3 Reload that the boss fight with two enemy persona users could use baton pass, on your party, but it only happened the one time, and since lots of the boss fights in that game are 2 Arcana at the same time, its such a missed opportunity. Even worse all Atlus difficulties seem to me to be based off multipliers now. You like merciless cool, you do .5 damage now. No one likes meat shields. No one. That is why I hate FF's stagger systems.

The first time I ever saw Nocturne was thanks to a friend from my brother. He was into JRPGs and presented to us Persona 3 and Nocturne. Since then I NEVER forgot about it and was always eager to want to know more about it. To this day I'm trying to finish it, going after the TDE as well for the full experience. It's SO punitive, since the RNG won't forgive you for small mistakes. But I learned that the trick is work a way around your mistake to make it work or hurt less. I love the gameplay, the themes, the art style. I love EVERYTHING about Nocturne. It's my favorite JRPG and was my gateway to SMT in general. First I was into Persona, and now I'm want to try the OG series. From Nocturne I will try P4 and then I see what I do from there. Maybe check Raidou's games. The gameplay seems interesting from my first glimpse.

I hate how Nocturne vanilla sold poorly that made Cozy leave the company, making the stories get worse. I hate how Maniax was the start of re-releases ruining the original vision of the game. I hate how DDS/Raidou/Strange Journey tried to capture the magic of early Megaten but fails at it. I hate how Strange Journey not being a successful title made Kaneko conviced it's time to let the new generation to take over the series now depsite still being pretty young. I hate how Persona 1-2 are forgotten, nobody wants to discuss the lore or the new iceberg for it. We are at the fucking POINT where Mother 1 + 2 are more well known than them. I kinda like and hate how Persona 3-5 made the series be the main series now while SMT is considered to be the sister series now.

I started the megaten franchise in 2019 with Persona 5, and from then played a lot of SMTV, Soul Hackers, Devil Survivors, a bit of SMT4 and some hours of Persona 4. Now I finally started from less than a week SMT3 on the PS4 and holy cow, even when I tried to far a couple of levels to fuse a lv19 Demon, and died like 10 times in a row completely random oneshotted by an angel while I was going to save my 25 minutes farming (and again, not 25 minutes, but 25 minutes 10+ times), I (almost) never got frustrated. Yes they are BS death, yes they make no sense, yes this is crap. But I wanted to keep on playing, and I can't wait to continue it tomorrow and face the Matador with the party I made just 'cause I think it's the best strat!

The difficulty is not bad IF you’re more of a thinking man. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of really stupid people out there....and yes, they will give up. I started gaming in 1980 at age 6. I stayed away from turn based games mostly, including Final Fantasy, forever. Then I bought a launch day Vita. I needed games, and was convinced to try Persona 4 Golden. After 32 years of gaming, it instantly became my favorite game ever, alongside Eternal Darkness. I played Persona 3 portable (still pray everyday for a remake/remaster.) afterward. I loved Catherine, as I dove more into Atlus games. Then, I decided to check out SMT 4 and Holy Shit, what a great game. Then Devil Summoner, etc. But this will be the first time I actually play Nocturne coming soon. Psyched! Also dying for SMT 5 and still need to play 4-Apocalypse. Of course, since I also played Persona 5 at launch and that and Bloodborne are my favorites of all time as of these days. SMT, Persona, and Resident Evil are the best franchises in gaming in MY humble opinion. I’ve played 3 Persona games, 5 SMT games (main and spinoffs total) and 13 Resident Evil total (including spinoffs obviously). It’s hard to get the necessary time for everything when you still play games from PS3, ps2, WiiU, 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Switch, Vita, AND 3DS. I own too many damn games.

SMT 3 Nocturne is on sale right now on PSN, 55 percent off. It’s been on my wanted list for awhile. I think I’d like it but I fear it may be too obtuse and cryptic for me. I dig JRPGs, I’ve beaten FF 3, 7, 8, 9 and Chrono Trigger but I’ve never played an SMT or Persona game, or really any recently released JRPG (though Dragon Quest XI is on my list too). Should I buy it? Great video! I’m currently “researching” lol and trying to decide if I should pick up Nocturne or not. This video is well made, informative and entertaining. Big Ups and thank you!

Nocturne is still my favorite JRPG of all time. Its a fun challenge, and not impossible and pretentious like the Souls games. The graphics and music is flawless.

algo threw the video to me so here's my comment my 1st megaten game was persona 3 portable on the psp, when i got a 3ds on 2010 oh boy did i enjoy all the titles i can get. Devil Survivor, devil summoner and SMT4 were so so good. I love the mainline smt games cause of how it doesnt restrict me to trying to date and relive high school like persona, just inflicts pain and suffering to players. After my 100% of smt 5 vengeance im considering getting nocturne and this video was informative.

Great vid man. Personally I like nocturne but passing on random skills whe fusing really turns me off, specially coming fron newer titles like smt4, and it doesn't seem like they're gonna change it. I've played hardtype and will probably find it had to go back to vanilla, even if it's in HD. Been hearing rumors about an eventual Steam port, so I might hold off until that and see how the modding community fixes things, assuming they do.
