There is a little more to this than a simple cover. Shinedown's original guitarist, Jasin Todd, was married to Melody Van Zant, the late great Ronnie Van Zant's daughter. They had known each other for many years as both Shinedown and Skynyrd were from Jacksonville. Also, Shinedown were given their first break at a venue in Jacksonville, where they played regularly, called "Freebird Live". That venue was owned by Judy Van Zant, Ronnie's widow. Shinedown used to play this song back then as a tribute to Ronnie and a thank you to Judy. Just a little interesting fact about this video - there is a little girl holding a picture - the picture is of Ronnie and the little girl is his grand-daughter. Best comment I've heard about all this was "People, not even most Shinedown fans, realise are that Shinedown are Lynyrd Skynyrd's family".

There is a version where the band plays as well so it's not just that version of this cover. I think the other version with the bandmates is better. It's very soulful.
