I still say "Raven" for the shipname as a) callback to Seven's backstory and b) ravens are known to befriend wolves, and Fenris(as in Fenris Rangers) is a wolf.

That romance between Seven and Chakotay just seemed very forced. There was no build up like there was between Chakotay and Janeway.

If they hadn’t hinted at a romantic relationship be Janeway and Chakotay, I would been very comfortable with them just being platonic close friends… but I feel like they crossed over that into setting up the relationship… and then just were like nah… hard left turn right to Seven.

It was decided out of nowhere, once Chakotay and Janeway wouldn't be a thing, that he was the closest the Voyager had to a Kirk. Let us not forget the "TIMELESS" alternate timeline where the entire crew dies using slipstream tech with the exception of Chakotay and Kim. Then years later the two of them risk everything to reset the timeline and are joined by Tessa Omond, his ridiculously attractive twentysomething paramore who is willing to possibly die, get captured, or even be erased from the timeline if they are successful just to make Chakotay happy. They revive the Doctor who doesn't understand who she is, and Kim has to point blank tell him that Chakotay is having sex with her for the doctor to get it. 100% Kirk energy.

I've watched Voyager in it's entirety at least three times and I still had to make a quick trip to Memory Alpha because I was SURE Samantha had been killed off and you were mistaken. THAT'S how hard the writers ignored her character.
@flyq7470
@flyq7470 2 жыл бұрын
I thought so too, I was like why would they set up nelix and seven as surrogate parents for Naomi if her moms still around, turns out that's exactly what they did. Feels kinda like they wasted two writing opportunities. Like Naomi doesn't have to come to terms with her moms death cuz she's fine she's just off screen, but they also just forget Samantha exists...for some reason. Instead of touching on what it's like being a single parent in deep space, millions of light-years from the spouse you thought you would be raising this child with. I'm sad now cuz that would have been a good story.

To be fair, her last appearance (not including a time travel bit in the past), was in the episode where she may die and the main conflict was how to break the news the Naomi. I think it was also the episode where Flotter appeared (and temporarily died by evaporation). So really, I think the only reason she didn't outright die might have been because having 'the main kid character lose her mom' was too dark an idea for the execs.

Early in Seven's run, she did clearly state that she was not beholden to sexual mores, monogamy, etc. *at all*. It was a throwaway line that was actually quite effective, and between that and her perspectives on doing things for pleasure and enjoyment, it actually set up her sexuality in a way that was surprisingly effective for the show. But the subtext that's *always* lurking with Seven, even with her appearances in Picard to date, is that being assimilated is a deeply personal assault akin to long-term sexual assault. We never learn whether some body horror elements of assimilation include that as well (and we never should), but the conversation with Picard about regaining their humanity is so strongly tied to that it is impossible to ignore. Combined with her being assimilated at a young age, and for one I'm glad that they largely avoided putting Seven into a couple-I don't think the writers in the early 2000s would have been able to tell that story with respect and gravitas, to be honest.

Doing literally anything with Samantha Wildman would have been good. I remember when the character first appeared that I thought it was good that characters started to get pregnant on the ship, given how long they expected to be gone. I think one of the notes Ronald D. Moore had for the show, that he talked about in his post-mortem essay was that there should have even been an order from the captain to start working on a replacement crew, since they at least expected to be a generation ship. Of course, given the nature of that order, it would be a pretty separate issue from what kinds of romantic relationships would be on the ship, especially since the idea of just one or two parents kind of goes by the wayside. It's a village raising all the kids. Therefore, a Seven/Samantha Wildman ship would be a fine suggestion.

You do realize that 'Seven of Nine' was named after the character "Rhoda" portrayed by Julie Newmar in the 1964 sitcom "My Living Doll" in which her role was that of a top secret Air Force project, a humanoid android robot, designated "AF-709". I was only seven years old. It was the very first time I saw Julie Newmar and I was completely smitten. The fact that she spent the entire first episode wearing nothing more than a towel clearly marked "AF-709" didn't hurt either. It was also the very first time I heard the term 'android' or 'computer' (she also originated the phrase "That does not compute"). I asked my dad what a computer was. He told me it was like a huge adding machine, but a whole lot more complicated. Almost a 'thinking machine.' But real computers are as big as a room. If she has one inside of her it must be almost impossibly small. I've been fascinated with computers ever since and just had to rush out and buy a Raspberry Pi as soon as it was released. The rest of the series was pretty silly, following the common sitcom formula of the day where our hero has a 'roommate' who's not a genie or a witch or a Martian but an actual robot! A few years later we finally got a Big antenna and could watch 'BatMan' like all the other kids, and there was my Julie Newmar again as CatWoman! Oh, fun fact: When the producers told her what they had in mind for her costume, she told them she had the purrfect material--she brought them the material to make the catsuit! Oh, Eartha Kitt was perrfectly excellent in the role as well, but my heart will always belong to Julie.

Intentional comment BEFORE watching: When 7of9 joined Voyager, i was strictly opposed that. She seemed a desperate executive attempt of "sex sells" in my beloved trek universe. But writers and actress both proved me wrong. Voyager as a whole is a mess compared to, lets say ds9 and tng; but 7of9s story arcs are some of the best that voyager has to offer. Some of them are surprisingly deep and, dare i say it, great! I did not watch any spoilers to season2 of picard yet, but i enjoyed her addition to season 1. I would hope for more talking and less fighting in season 2, if it was up to me. edit: damn language barrier. i was not aware of the term shipping, it seems.

Yeah, in Anime the Term shipping is much better known. According to your name your First language is German, so I can relate to that. I wasnt aware of the Term either, when suddenly shipping wars in a certain Anime broke out and the term became present everywhere. When I first watched Voyager I was too young to really realize her curves but I was all into the Story, a former enemy with a complete different View of existence. When I became older, her character was already established so I didnt care about it. Grüße aus Deutschland :)

Sex always sold when it comes to star trek, I wasn’t old enough when this was all live on tv to care, but bringing 7 online in hind sight seems to have balanced out voyager with all the other series. Kirk was constantly at it, tng was extremely sexy, and ds9 had Jadzia AND Kira... cough cough mirror universe ;) oh and don’t forget about Tipal however her name is spelled, but she is probably following 7’s formula.

13:00 - How about this for interpersonal conflict, sexual tension, AND getting a little different about it: Seven and the Doctor are an item, and one of the things they get off on most is them becoming one person like in Body and Soul (only with a lot more mutually understood boundaries for their shared body). Some of the crew don't approve, some don't care, and some get REALLY uncomfortable when the two-in-one start looking for someone to join them when they're together. It can be like Tuvix only Janeway gets waaaaay more uncomfortable talking to them about how she needs both of them doing their jobs separately. 16:00 - The Janeway holonovel thing can go sideways when Seven goes through the entire thing, isn't very interested, and then drags Janeway through her own holonovel - being a Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01 so Janeway can learn what it was like for Seven while Seven learns human behavior from Janeway.

Honestly, I always thought that it would make sense for Seven to join Tom and B'elanna as a throuple. As a person with Borg implants she would have the strength and regenerative abilities to withstand anrgy, half-Klingon sex and give Tom some chance for his bruises and bones to set. And also, someone who he can cry in the arms of with only a minimum of contempt from, as Seven might think this is all normal.

I always found the idea of Seven hooking up with anyone a bit of an ethical quandary. She went into the Collective when she was like, 8 years old, iirc? When she’s first liberated, a huge part of her arc is that she obviously lacks any of that emotional development of someone her biological age. She seems to be an example of the “born sexy yesterday” trope, to an extent. Is she really able to give full sexual consent? As time goes on and she develops that emotional maturity, a sexual relationship seems more ethical, but where is the point that it became okay?

I guess it really comes down to just how much personality and experience a borg drone has after disconnection from the collective. If they remember everything from the hivemind up till that point, including others perspectives, id say theres a case for being more mature from the offset. But if its just their individual experience retained, then itd result in being much less mature
@davidl6558
@davidl6558 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think Seven is an example of the "born sexy yesterday" trope. While the show does give some attention to educating and acclimating Seven, it's mostly in the context of exiting the Collective and not catching her up in terms of age. Pairing her up with anyone within the show's run and especially anyone with positions of authority seems like a bad idea.

I don't feel that her portrayal was anywhere close to an developmentally stunted individual. Inexperienced yes, but not deficient. To me it was no different than someone from a restrictive family going away to college and experiencing things directly that they had only read about before. From this line of thinking, the Doctor was even younger. If you don't think he's sexy you obviously haven't seen him as a naked cowboy. ;)

What's kinda cool is that shipping, Fanzines and Fanfiction started with the Star Trek Fandom in the late 60's. Kirk and Spock are the OG's in that department, AND in the sense of being (probably?) the first instance of two heterosexual men being shipped together. All of this stuff STARTED with Trek, and then just branched out into fandom as a whole years later.
@Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox 2 жыл бұрын
100% with you that modern fandom - including the current version of fanfic, fanzines, etc, started with the women who really enjoyed TOS and wanted to write there own stuff within that universe, some of them started writing romance and only really had three fully developed characters to play with there, and one of them was Bones who... Yeah, doesn't really work as well with either Kirk or Spock than Spock and Kirk do together. Because as much as TOS rightfully gets credit for having more representation than most shows of the time... The show only really fully developed Kirk, Spock and McCoy, and I am not saying the rest of this to dismiss how much modern fandom owes to the women in early Trek fandom. But I'd argue fanfic - and to a lesser extent shipping (and the example I'm going to use actually demonstrates both) - is a return to how we, as humans, have traditionally engaged with stories in the era of copyright. After all, originally, Maid Marion and Robin Hood were from entirely separate bits of folklore that eventually people started intertwining together and it's that intermingled version where Robin and Marion get together that's survived - In modern terminology, a crossover slash fic of the original two folklore figures. (Before we get onto Shakespeare and how much of his plays are reworkings and retellings - fanfic, in other words - of older stories, or Disney and how many of their films could be considered fanfic of traditional fairytales. Or how The Divine Comedy is blatantly Dante's self insert Bible fanfic)

The first instance of two heterosexual men being shipped together, that I know was Sherlock Holmes and Jhon Watson, back in the days of the original publications. It was a short series of tales, from a "erotic" penny dreadfull magazine. They investigate a series of murders, related to a book of "romantic poetry between gentlemen". While reading that book, for clues, they start to have "awakening emotions"... They don't go all the way with one another, but them both admit to themselves about theyr feelings, and become saddened for not beying able to tell each other about it, and decide to continue beying professional partners, and keeping theyr feelings hidden. It ends, with them both thinking "if only I could muster the strenght to tell him...." The best part is that the way the tales were written does not disturb the continuity of the books (the originals). It is just a short case that takes a week or so to solve, and they mention facts from other books. Also, they went back to the "will they, wont they" after the fact. The question that I have is: DOES IT MAKES IT CANNON?

Seven/Samantha has been written in a complete four-part story covering season four through seven and is amazing. it partially tackles a lot of episodes, tackles the issue of how the borg episodes really made the borg a badly-written villain that got dumber with each appearance and making it literal canon in the story... and also includes reference to some comic adventures including a crossover with Doctor Who, where the borg teamed up with the Cybermen or something and the latter left a virus behind because the cybermen dont want the borg, trek's version of the cybermen, to win.

I really love Seven and Janeway as characters separately. It annoyed me the show kept trying to hook them up with the most boring character on the show. Brannon Braga once said he purposely made Chakotay underdeveloped/underwritten because the actor annoyed him. It was weird they kept trying to put him with the two female characters the show cared the most about.

My ship for Seven would be Vorik... the Vulcan that tried to get it on with B'elanna. Seven had limited emotional range and got along with Tuvok because she had an appreciation for his unemotional style. Vorik was a Vulcan who could share some of that with her. But he was actually more open to human stuff than Tuvok. He socialized with the humans of the crew w/o being forced like Tuvok. So he's a nice in between Vulcan detachment but more accepting of humanity. By the time the show ends, Vorik is about three years away from his next pon farr. For his first one, he waited until the last minute to make his move on B'elanna. Logic would dictate that he starts making plans a lot earlier for his next one. He could have been trying to lock Seven down during the last two seasons. When his next Pon Farr rolled around he'd be ready.

Growing up, I wanted to see a relationship between Kim & Seven develop, partially because I could see so much of myself in him. I assume you're aware that George Bernard Shaw, who wrote the play that My Fair Lady is based on, never wanted Eliza and Higgins to end up together, and in his original version of the play, they do not, for exactly the reasons you state. But theaters kept staging the play with a "happy ending" that Shaw never wrote. He hated it, but audiences ate it up, and that's the version that got adapted into the musical.

The added imaginary legal minutiae is brilliant; & makes sense in universe. For the last one, I think some tragedy is need, enter the Dominion and that's how Samantha and her husband's marriage would end; literally have him be killed in the Dominion War. I say this, because I feel like emotions stemming from loose rather than anger could serve the potential story to be told better. Seven lost her parents in a violent manner, so it could help them connect, having a similar, but different loose occur for Samantha (BUT do NOT hurt Naomi - plus we need someone to get it going).
@arklestudios

If I remember right it's canon that Samantha's husband had a shop on the promenade on DS9, so he could've died as part of the Resistance when the Dominion occupied the station in early Season 6.
@RedXlV
@RedXlV Жыл бұрын
@@arklestudios As far as I know, canon doesn't specify the circumstances behind Greskrendtregk being on DS9, just that Janeway met him there once. It's possible he was just there to see his wife off before her deployment. Though if he lives there, that actually does make a lot more sense because nobody actually expected Voyager to be on a years-long deployment. From their perspective, they'd expect to Samantha to be able to just come see him again whenever her next leave comes up, so Greskrendtregk taking a trip to DS9 to see her off (instead of just doing so when she got on a shuttle to leave Earth, Ktaris, or whichever colony they might have their home on) would've been pretty extravagant. So bottom line, it's very plausible for Greskrendtregk to have still been on DS9 when the Dominion occupation rolled in, and also plausible for the husband of a Starfleet officer to aid the resistance rather than just sitting back and taking it.

My alternative Seven relationship: Tom and B'Elanna. During the episode where aliens are doing invisible experiments on the crew and B'Elanna and Tom are going at it like rabbits, an orgy breaks out and the couple are introduced to the commanding yet tender styles of an ex-Borg. Afterwards B'Elanna realizes that, although she loves Tom she finds his lovemaking nice but ultimately unsatisfying and broaches the subject to him. He isn't sure, but agrees to a trial if Seven is amenable. Seven, for her part, hs been feeling awkward after the experience, not knowing how to reconcile the event with continuing to treat Tom and B'Elanna as mere crewmates. The relationship between the three grows beyond sex with each complementing the others. Seven feels like she can be more open with B'Elanna than anyone has been and they have long talks together. Tom and Seven's relationship is less close, though they both do love each other and are seen consoling each other when B'Elanna is missing on the crashed Delta Flier. The Unimatrix story arc gets a bit rough at times with Seven's feelings for her ex returning, but the three of them talk it over and B'Ellana still volunteers to be assimilated because she wants to help Seven. Tom is more accepting of this reasoning than he is in the real episode. The Borg didn't have any use for reproductive organs so Seven can never get pregnant, even so, she is ecstatic when B'Elanna gets pregnant. Seven is better able to talk B'Elanna out of genetically altering the fetus. Happily ever after. Or something, I dunno, I don't think I could be a romance writer.

So glad I'm not the only person who was confused by the fact that none of Voyager's former-Maquis crew members seemed to face any legal consequences when they reached Earth. I've always thought the series finale should've been a quieter, more dramatic episode finally resolving THAT conflict (and promoting Harry!), but I guess I shouldn't have expected anything better or more nuanced than what we actually got. Same goes for the whole "Sevantha" idea, which would've been great.

With the war on, and the rest of the Maquis dead or already locked up, id imagine it wasnt worth the effort to try the what, dozen or so Maquis that made it back, espically if they were willing to stay "in starfleet". More bodies to fight the Dominion is better than comitting the resources to lock them up after all. Heck, Chakotay may have wound up with a Miranda class and a wing of fighters crewed by all the Maquis that stsrfleet had already locked up by the end of the war.

Actually, I believe that in US (and likely Federation) law, a divorce can be filed due to estrangement. Such as one spouse being stuck on the other side of the Galaxy for YEARS with no contact. Heck, he could have just assumed she was dead long before then and moved on without the need for divorce due to her being presumed dead. Which I believe many people assumed of the Voyager crew after their disappearance.
