This is also called Bluff waterfalls and is located across the Kaveri or Cauvery river.
Off late, it has been raining heavily at Karnataka. Hence a trip to some waterfalls goes without saying.
I chose to visit Shivanasamudra, which has two popular waterfalls on river Kaveri, located in the Chamarajanagar district. It is about 130 kms from Bangalore city.
We started from Bangalore at about 5:30am, took the Kanakapura Road and later Kollegal road and were at entrance of Bharachukki Falls by around 8:20am
Shivanasamudra, is basically an island town, where river Kaveri is naturally split into western and eastern branches. The western branch results in the twin waterfall of Gaganachukki, whereas the eastern branch results in the Bharachukki waterfalls.
Entry to Bharachukki falls is controlled by the Karnataka Forest Department and gates open at 9:00 am.
Made use of my waiting time to have breakfast which I was carrying from home.
As I parked my car and walked a little ahead, I got first glimpse of the majestic Bharachukki Waterfalls.
The entire falls was full of water creating a majestic fog as it was hitting the base.
Also, the roar made while water gushing out from this falls will definitely give you goose bumps.
Well maintained viewing deck is available to witness this falls.
Even as I stood at the edge of the viewing point, I could feel splashes of water hitting my face which was truly an awesome experience.
River water dropping off tall rock cliffs, with lush green forests all around ensures a mesmerizing view and photographer’s delight.
Though part of the same Cauvery river, the viewpoints to observe Gaganachukki and Bharachukki are about 15 kms apart. My next destination was the Gaganachukki waterfalls.
On the way to Gaganachukki, made a brief stop to see the ancient bridge.
This bridge is the oldest heritage stone bridge, built in the erstwhile princely State of Mysore during the year 1818 across River Cauvery.
The 400-metre bridge is called the Wellesley Bridge by the locals.
But historical references say that while initially the bridge was named after colonial administrator Lord Richard Colley Wellesley, it was renamed as Lushington Bridge in 1835.
Also, this bridge is famous, as many movie scenes have been shot at this place.
Gaganachukki is another magnificent falls tucked in the lap of nature..
As the river was in full spate, it was an exhilarating experience to feel the water drops falling on skin, as the falls came crashing down thunderously into a cloud of foaming spray.
Sir Vishveshwarya Hydro Electric Plant which is India's first hydro-electric power station is located at the waterfall and is still functional.
This station was commissioned by the Diwan of Mysore, Sir K Seshadri Iyer.
The power generated here was initially used in the Kolar Gold Fields.
At Gaganachukki, there are some local vendors selling tea, coffee, biscuits, coconut water, snacks etc.
You can also carry your own lunch as well and find some spot to eat.
However, beware of Monkeys. They do look for food.
I have seen many waterfalls in my life, but that of Shivasamudraa waterfalls just during monsoons was totally unique experience.
For me, the learning that the island is one of three islands formed by the River Kaveri was enlightening!
