Tips for soldering: Keep your metals clean! Solder does not like dirty metals. That is why flux is used; it keeps the metal clean whilst soldering, as heat makes the surface oxidise. Also, flux is not the healthiest stuff, so solder in a well ventilated area. You don't need a lot of flux and you don't need a lot of solder. I don't know the pasty kind of flux, but I wouldn't normally heat up flux before applying the solder (I use liquid flux). Heat the entire piece of jewellery up very well (with the "big flame" on the torch, aka. the outer most part of the flame), and when everything is really hot, move closer to the solder with the "small flame", where the flame is blue-ish. My guess as yo why the solder didn't work the first time was because the ring itself wasn't heated properly, but I'm not sure. Happy you made it work in the end, though. The rings look awesome!

Thank you Charlie!! I hope people who try soldering their rings read this first!:):
@claravannieuwerburgh2280
@claravannieuwerburgh2280 3 жыл бұрын
Correct! ring needs to be heated first with a larger softer red flame. Flux prevents oxidation, you don’t need a lot of it, but too much doesn’t do any harm either (well, If u use a liquid one, the piece you’re trying to solder won’t hold in place as it’s slipping). Then, after placing bezel and solder, heat locally with a sharper and shorter blue flame. You want to keep a distance not too close, not too far from the tip of your flame. Also, there are three types of solder (soft, medium, hard) depending on what you want to do. And voilà 😊
@looncroon
@looncroon 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shmoxd oh ya, something else too is if you quench your metal (dunk it in water) right after it's heated, the quick temp change can snap off whatever joint you solder, so I recommend letting it cool down on its own on gravel-y stuff :) PS: this is one of my fave vids of yours, it's really cool how you did the two methods, it's super accessible & I liked the silly voice over comments behind the voiceover

Ever see where they take the spoon place objects (crystals,gems, charms whatever) then resin is poured over top . It can then be worn ad a necklace. I have one i got from a Friend its the coolest thing!!
@sheenahope3586
@sheenahope3586 3 жыл бұрын
You can use the spoon ends to make large pendants for necklaces or soldier pins on the backs to make brooches. People will fill the concave side with stones, polymer clay, silver clay, beads, gold leaf, dried flowers, dead insects, small skulls, shells, small pictures, tiny keepsakes, teeth, fingerprints, lock of hair, etc then fill with resin. You can pigment the resin or leave clear. The sky is the limit. You can even simply paint a design on the spoon and cover with resin. If you have a kiln, you can even do enameling or silver clay or both. When you cut the heads off the spoons, leave some handle attached so you can make a hook that curls over for the attachment to a necklace. Fret not because you can also, of course, drill holes to put in a pretty clasp on the ones you cut too close! Waste not, want not. 😁

The white block is simply a polishing compound :) at work we use red rouge, green rouge, blue picasso, tripoli, platinum 4000 and platinum 8000. Different grit in the compounds will leave a coarser or finer finish on the metal. Very cool video! Glad I watched.

hey! quick tip, i’ve really gotten into making rings (i saw a video about this i just don’t remember her name) and for your tools with teeth, if you get this thing called “plasti dip” and dip your tools into it, i dip my needle nose pliers and just my regular pliers, it makes a rubbery coating so there won’t be any chips or marks in your metal!!! you can just redip every time it gets worn down :))

For stones that shine like diamonds you should polish the interior of the housing of the stone. It really helps with the end result, you should also invest in a ultrasonic cleaner, they cost like 60-70 $ and they will make your life much easier. They are a bit loud but still worth it. I was a jeweler apprentice so if you want more advice you can ask for it. The results are really cool. Keep it going
