What's happening, folks! I'm back with another Smiths reaction as we continue to go through their 1984 self-titled debut album, and this time we listen to "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle." As you'll see, I wasn't able to piece together the lyrics too well (despite understanding the origin of the title phrase to a certain degree), but it's another example of the band's dreamy sonics and Morrissey's amazing voice. So join me as e listen to some more Smiths! Cheers!

i always seen this as a song about protecting an orphan motherless child. the lyrics are great but musically i prefer when they are less monotonous. still a beautiful song. and i can't just hear the words: "mother i can feel the soil falling over my head"......oh.....wow (you will get to that song at some point :)

Moz writes the lyrics and Marr the music.

Love being able to reexperience the smiths for the first time vicariously through you :) I have to say, watching their live performances and seeing their look (and Morrissey's dancing) is also a big component of their appeal in my opinion. I wonder if you would be able to start watching their videos as part of your reactions? If you link/mention the video that you react to then viewers at home could just sink up videos from separate tabs if overlaying videos is too complicated to edit.

Now that's an interesting idea! Indeed, I've mentioned a few times that I'm not super tech-savvy, which is why I don't currently react to videos. But I would like to react to videos, not only music videos, but also excerpts from movies, maybe even do comedy-riffs, etc. I have a friend who wants to help me improve my set-up/video abilities, but he lives far away and we haven't been able to sync a workable time yet. However, the idea you raise---of doing a reaction (presumably in headphones) while others cue up the actual video in a separate tab could be done with the setup I have now, though I'd have to toy with it and see how to make it work. Bottom line, I do plan on reacting to the Smiths' live performances at some point (as well as videos from other bands I've been deep-diving through), so cheers for that suggestion! Will keep people apprised of the situation either way. :)

The meaning of this song isn't really known. People thought it was about child abuse, but Morrissey said that it wasn't. He didn't go in to what it was actually about though. Perhaps it is about a lonely child who can see his mom is being abused, but can't understand it properly, and is putting the pieces together years after the fact.

I actually always thought it's from perspective of someone who killed the child's mother

Oh damn, I see. Will have to re-listen with that interpretation in mind.

@@mattsnider2667 Hahah it's probably just my imagination going crazy, I only think that because of "there'll be blood on a cleaver tonight" and "your mother... (...) I did my best for her" . Another possibility is that it's not so gruesome, it's just someone trying to protect motherless child :)

The song isn't autobiographical. It's left to the listener to figure out. An incredibly beautiful track, it turns extremely suspicious when speaking of having a child. Morrissey never gave a solid explanation, but one might come to the conclusion that a "religious figure" is involved here. Yeah...

I can't catch the meaning but from the first listening i thought it was about a molestation cause Morrissey frequently got this creepy overtone to me
