What's up, people! I'm back with another Smiths reaction, and this time we listen to another song from their 1986 album The Queen Is Dead, "There Is a Light that Never Goes Out." I was able to follow the lyrics a little bit better in this one than in some others, though I'm still not entirely sure if I was thinking of the lines correctly. Either way, the sonics in this one felt familiar yet expanded (and Morrissey's vocals are great as well), so join me as we listen to another top track from the Smiths. Cheers!

I cannot put into words how great this song is. Everything from the lyrics, the bass, to the synths is just perfection. Hope you continue with the Smiths and then Morrissey! Always look forward to your reactions

You are correct, sir. This was the era that Johnny started dabbling with synths. His precursor to Electronic (with Neil Tennant).

Nice, I've reacted to a few Electronic tunes already, though I sort of put them on hold while I finish going through the Smiths catalog.

That said, I think Marr's main collaborator in Electronic is Bernard Sumner of Joy Division and New Order. Of course, people explained to me that Neil Tennant worked with them on several tracks, and I've even reacted to one of those already. Great stuff!

Another highlight on a great album - just a fantastic track, full stop. Heavy use of synths add to the Morrissey/Smiths trademark elements and really lift the song.

Lovely lovely love song. Probably about missed opportunities, but a stoic message of devotion. (Is the t shirt a Seinfeld reference? George at his finest)

Haha, yes! I am a big Seinfeld fan and it is indeed a reference to George's fake company, LOL. Good catch!

@@mattsnider2667 also a big fan of Seinfeld, find myself deploying ‘SERENITY NOW!’ at times of stress. Not that it works.

Hahaha, hilarious. Yeah, I'm a historian/tutor by day, so these are the kinds of references that come to the fore.

Such a great song, one for the romantics. With a dash of black humour of course. Yes it's about being so in love with someone that even dying with them doesn't scare them, they would welcome it. I don't think they are looking to die, it's just a romantic notion that expresses how much they love them. Morrissey was very influenced by 60's female singers and particularly Twinkle who wrote Terry, a teen death song, much like The Shangri-a's Leader of the Pack. So that's where the inspiration comes from I think. It's synth strings on the track, but what a gorgeous melody. One a personal note, the guy I was pining over with the songs on Meat Is Murder was my boyfriend by the time Queen Is Dead and we would play this as I drove him around. Happy days :) He's married now (to a woman, it was the 80's, what can I say!) but we are still good friends.

Cheers, appreciate the lyrical insight, and I love hearing that personal bit. I do remember you mentioning that story in the previous reaction. And it is such a nice post-script that you remain friends to this day. Great stuff, thanks as always for your contributions, Mark.

I remember being disappointed when I first heard this song. I believe I heard it on The John Peel radio show prior to the album's release. The album release was delayed due to wranglings between certain parties. I find the track a little over produced and I don't particularly like the chord progression. It was the first time that I felt that The Smiths had moved away from the familiar (but oh so special) territory and were making a grab at the mainstream. Although after saying that, Morrisseys lyrics are ridiculously idiosyncratic as ever. Much prefer The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, though. That's the highlight for me.
