I think Ryan is ready to apply his new skills. He was just being daunted by the magnitude of looking at the WHOLE house, but Nick has taught him to tackle one task at a time. That chops it down to size, and gives the satisfaction of seeing something completed before taking up the next job. Ryan has always had the enthusiasm and drive to do it, he just needed the confidence.🖤🇨🇦

@@user-vb6gl6nf7c I agree, most people do better working with someone else, but he has wanted to do this project mostly on his own. In part, to prove he CAN, as much to himself as others. I think we will see Nick when Ryan hits a snag, and needs a little more guidance, but Nick has his farm and family, and can’t commit to being there every weekend. In helping Ryan take the house apart, he can now see how to put it back together. He will take pride in doing the bulk of the project, and being able to show others what he has accomplished.🖤🇨🇦

About 25 years or so ago, I bought a house and had it gutted to the studs. Most everything ended up costing more than originally thought. There was one month where a new surprise popped up every day. On average, each new surprise cost about $1,000 to deal with. An extra thousand a day for a month was a real budget killer.

You only need pressure treated when there is a possibilty of it getting wet. Doing proper maintenance on the exterior of the house will make that a non issue in the future. Also, since that house is over 200 years old, the floors were carrying that much weight with the dirt, it's impressive that the beams lasted that long.

The dirt floors provided a great deal of noise absorption so you wouldn’t hear every word spoken or every step taken. The dirt also held heat and cool. Many old buildings had dense materials put between the joists. This home may be unlivable without it.

As for Louis, he will be very much missed by Ed as well as by the viewers. Such a handsome charming amusing fellow (and a hard worker). I wish Louis success with his hat shop regardless. For you, it is not a matter of restoring an old house to what it was when it was built. When it was new, it was not very good, perhaps lousy. What you need to do is build a new house from within the exterior walls. This is the only way you will have confidence in the end result. Essentially, you need to make the house BETTER than when it was new.

@@ctaylorluce Oh yes, it would make great video to be sure, and one can always dream. There are just a lot of people that keep saying thanks (on behalf of Ryan), for the help Nick has given him, as if he is not capable of being adult enough to do it himself. Lots of viewers seem also to think he can’t do this kind of work himself, and sometimes it cuts his confidence in himself. I think he really needs to show himself, as well as Billy and Nick that he isn’t just the class clown. He did kind of set himself up in that role on Billy’s channel, but he seems to want to be seen as both funny and capable. I said the same to several people who were asking Nick to stay, because Ryan needed him to keep him motivated and on track. I have seen Ryan react in a hurt way to some comments in the past, and I know people didn’t mean to have that effect, but what he really needs now is people to have confidence in him, and encourage him to to go for it. Thank you for wearing gloves. I know the "marshmallows" is bad news but, well, better to deal with it now and you'll get through it. How can you not? You have such good friends who know so many things and, as Nick said, "it's doable" and "the bones of her are good." Hugs and take care. Oh, and you'll need "noggins" for your joists 😀Oh, and does this mean the ceiling in the basement can be a little higher?

@@samsmom1491 I think they mean that due to the thickness of the layer of ashes on the floor of the basement, if it were dug out, the ceiling would indeed be higher. That's great news. Worth the work that would be involved.

I’m one of those who always expects the worst when it comes to renovations so I’m rarely disappointed 😂 but really it’s best to get in there and find all the bad stuff so you can make plans. It’s going to be a lovely house when finished and well worth the costs. So glad you’ve had Nick to help out, now get on with the work.❤❤

Ryan, if you look at the Bordeaux video of their new apartment building, they did a total gut, stripped from its plaster all the way back to the original stone wall. I believe you are going to be doing just that and tear down all walls as well. I got a feeling the kitchen/tea floor may need to come up as well. Don't despair, you will get it done just right and it will last many more years to come!

Good morning Ryan and Nick. Thank you Nick for being there for Ryan and sharing your knowledge to help him in renovating his home. Ryan you have gained confidence in the start of this renovation and I pray you keep that positive attitude as you progress along the way to getting your home in the most fantastic property. I know it’s going to be challenging but I have faith in your abilities and guidance along the way from Nick or whoever will help you , you will get it done. Don’t give up… you will succeed. I would suggest cleaning out the basement first while all the floors are out, as I don’t see an exit to the outside in that basement. And looks like you’ll need a better set of stairs too. Bottom to Top… one level at a time. Good luck Ryan. Stay safe and know you are loved.

Interesting about the basement and all the ash. That will be an amzing area to make. With the tunnel a focus point. The brick work is beautiful. That will be a ton of work to clear out but as you say well worth the work. But one step at a time. Enjoyed watching today. The plan for your house is so clearer now. Have fun with your jurney .

Oh gosh, I’ve just started watching and my heart’s in my throat! I’m hoping this first level floor is OK, but sadly, it’s not good news. Well, on the bright side it guarantees that the house will be perfect once you get to the reconstruction phase. All new and most importantly, safe! At least with new joists you shouldn’t suffer from squeaky floors! Small mercy I know. Sorry you’ve had this sad surprise Ryan.❤️❤️❤️

Ryan, you'll probably purchase treated floor joists and I've seen carpenters paint the ends with a water repellant paint and also put into the joist wall pockets either a dry or wet lime plaster mix into those pockets to alleviate moisture accumulation and allows the stone to breathe. Nick is right about the render on both sides of the exterior walls has locked the moisture in the stonework, not allowing the walls to breathe and dry out properly. For safety's sake, use a hard hat, goggles and a dust mask, or PPEs.

Hey Ryan, You’re doing the right thing. Know there is extra expense and work, but the peace of mind, safety and security, plus getting not just a room, but entire structure modernized and up to code will improve the livability and worth of the structure. They always say location, location. Location and look at yours. Worth $15,000 for that alone. Glad Nick went through it all with you. You two have done a complete, thorough job of assessing. 👏 Wishing you the best!👍
