Spot on Robert. We've known each other virtually for a long time now and I have equal respect for you. You are a deer killing machine most years. I agree that it comes down to what makes you happy. As you mention, I am passionate about hunting. I don't miss many days in a season, but I also love shooting target archery. For me that means different bows and setups to be able to compete at the level I want to shoot at. I hunting with a D style longbow and wood arrows all this season. I made several self bows this year, and I shoot barebow in competition. I've shoot all the classes - longbow, primitive, Trad, and Barebow, but I compete best with barebow so that's where I stay. If you ask me what I enjoy shooting most, it's my longbow and wood arrows. That gives me the greatest satisfaction. Love your authenticity, my friend. My very best to you.

Robert, you hit the nail on the head. I used to be a very good shot, but then I started reading a traditional archery forum and they said I was doing everything wrong. I wasn't at anchor long enough for example. Lately, I've returned to my personal style and am shooting well again, thank god.

I did the exact same thing, except I don't shoot much anymore.

Well said! I've found that most bowhunters with enough experience come to the conclusion that there is really no comparison between shooting targets and animals.

I’m the same as you. I’m a hunter. Shooting a 3D tournament would be horrible for my target panic.

Hey Mr. Carter, thank you for clarifying the difference between the two. I'm an Archery Instructor in South Africa. The same question came up in my last lesson. This is exactly how I explained it, however you 5alk from so much experience. Thank you

I think we all struggle with target panic sooner or later shooting targets and hunting is so different. I’ve taken several animals with a bow but was never a good target shooter. Well said great video !!!!

Tournament archery is like golf. First you need to do the mini waggle before you can do the maxi waggle, before the full swing.

Hey Mr.Carter i asked this question to Jason samkowiak, and interested in your input as well . I also hunt hogs on public in Georgia and was curious what your methodology when it comes to finding hogs/ hog sign . Are there certain terrain features you are looking for habitat etc ? From what I can find it seems like it’s just a game of how many miles you can cover before you get on them. Might be an interesting video topic.

I cover ground. When I find sign or hogs in certain kind of terrain I look in those same type of spots on the other places I hunt.

When I was a new bowman back in '71 I read all I could find on Howard Hill and Bob Swinehart. I had and may still have Mr. Swinehart's book Sagittarius. It suffers from all the misuse of moving multiple times and tough the book (hardback) is still intact the paper cover is a mess. I think I will dig around and see if I can find it.

Mr. Carter that is great information. I am a hunting archer. In hunting situations one is not always able to shoot from a target archers stance. I find myself shooting from kneeling, sitting and crouched over situations while shooting around, under and over limbs, bushes and trees most of the time. It is almost impossibe to shoot using perfect target archers form all the time. I should say most of the time. I do shoot a lot of 3D targets, but mostly I shoot kneeling, sitting or crouched over. Our group of shooters don't even take score cards. I am 71 and there are only 2 younger than me out of 6 regular shooters. Most of us can't even stand up in perfect form, at least for long. At 15 to 20 yards our group will hit the vitals of a deer 90 to 95 % of the time. What I am finding is getting up from these positions is the hard part. Please keep these great videos coming.

I couldn't agree more ,it's really about if you can make a lethal kill shot not about hitting a 12 ring on a 3D target. Your videos are always fun to watch and you are a true sportsmen . I love watching the traditional bow hunting videos on youtube so much better than the guys on sportsmen or outdoor channel , it's real hunting . I'm pushing 63 and have been into trad about 5 years now and have hunted the past 3 years with traditional equpment and I'm still looking for my first deer harvest ,got close this past season but just a bit too far to shoot , hopefully I'll get it done this year God willing. Thanks for bring us your honest videos it's much appreciated . Good hunting to you Robert be safe.

I self-taught myself to shoot when I was 14 years old. I guess I learned the Quick Way because im 60 now and man that went quick! I still shoot the same,..draw,aim,shoot. If i put any thought into the process, I'll be off a freckle but still be in the kill zone. Enjoy life while we can. Thanks for your topic of the day... good thinkin fuel.

I totally get where you are coming from Robert. I think I've read the same FB posts and watched the same videos. The weird thing about target panic is that it seems to become a problem when a fella (me) really desires to excel at shooting the bow. Tournaments can sometimes be harmful when the competitive urges become too strong. Hunting should simply be a personal challenge with no competition. Glad you are blessed with the time to enjoy your bow and hunt in a way that fulfills your desires.

Very true words. Be a decent shot and a better outdoorsman. I don’t even shoot well at 20 yards. But I am a hunter and plan to get close. My tree stands are set up in cover for close shots under 15 yards. My last buck was 12 yards, before that 8 yards. Shoot often to build muscle memory and hunt close!

Blessed to have enjoyed both tournaments and hunting. No longer do tournaments but stay fairly busy answering “challenges” here in back yard which in most cases, I’m teaching someone interested in traditional.

I have shot just about everything and every style but have always come back to Trad because of the pure simplicity of the stick and string. I am a hunter first, a meat hunter at that. My objection is after years of making it harder on myself, it to make the killing shot and these days, preferably under 15 yards, closer to 6 or 7. I know where I need to hit and make a good clean kill and I plan to take advantage of whatever opportunity I am given. Yes, sometimes the window is small and quick but having the confidence to seal the deal is what it is about. The biggest thing for me, has been realizing that most of my misses have been from not aiming low enough for the deer's drop. Aim low and keep your shots within reason. practicing like you plan to hunt, still hunting or sitting or both. Another awesome video Brother

Since I've found your videos, I don't miss one. I own a compound. Don't feel right. I own a cross bow, like carrying a howitzer into the woods. I learned to shoot from 2 guys who carried .longbows, shot wooden arrows, and shot everything from grasshoppers, to rabbits, to squirrels, to ground hogs, to deer, and they were successful. There's just something about an old longbow. It just feels right in your hand and it's honest. Like your style sir.

I guess I missed this video, when you first put it up. I tend to agree with you. Lately, I have been shooting only my longbow. I am not a pinpoint shooter, although I do make some really good shot at small targets, sometimes. But if I can hit a killing shot (minute of deer) very consistently, for about any position, and reasonable range, I am happy. I am going to shoot some 3D this year, since I have found out about a trad only 3D range. But I am not worried about being in the ten-ring, I just want to make a killing shot. And I am not using light arrows either, just fairly heavy hunting weight arrows.

Robert, love your videos and this one really helped me put things in perspective. My primary goal is hunting, but the season is short around here and I do find myself at the range from time to time. I can often nail that first arrow, but can't consistently group at the longer target distances yet and I get a bit down shooting next to the compound guys who are upset when they won't get the X. But I have to remember, we're not doing the same thing, using the same equipment, or have the same end goals in mind. I know that if we were in the woods, I'd shoot circles around those guys when it would comes to small game. I have to remember that I'm training to become a bow hunter and target archery will always be second to that. I see you're on Nate Steens "SUNSET HILL LONGBOWS AND LEATHER" blog as well. Nate has a wealth of information and that blog is a treasure trove for us traditional guys!

I fall in the social 3d tournament shooters. I still don't see myself as being good enough to ethically kill game when I shoot. I look more to our hunter's score. 10 points in the kill and -10 out side the kill . I normally come up with a total of 0 which to me isn't consistent enough to hunt with a bow. Now I get out as often as I can hunting rabbits and ducks with my harris's hawk . which I find way more fun than any other style of hunting. Not as productive but way more fun.
