Shooting a Polished Japanese Foil Ball. Can Foil Stop a Bullet? FarmCraft101

What should I do with my polished foil ball? Shoot it! I don't have access to a cannon that can shoot it, but I can still shoot it. How many bullets can it stop? The results surprised me. This aluminum foil is surprisingly tough stuff!

Just a point of reference, the 'big canon's' touch-hole has not so much been 'capped' but 'spiked' - this was how muzzle loaders were temporarily disabled during the heat of battle to stop them being fired. Am sure the spike could be drilled out and the canon 'made able' again!

you know i think that would be a really cool display piece in a geologists collection. yes its a very refined metal but would still oddly fit... at least in mine, i also hope to have some stone weapons and a few swords eventually. (it goes through a lot before its actual aluminum, its actually from a rock and not a "metal" in nature)

Well, I'm a little late, but for the initial ball (before and after melting), it would be nice to non-destructively measure its density, which should match the aluminum number you found in the reference book. I guess that would account for a measure of the impurities and the size of the holes/pockets in the sphere. Good perseverance.

I think the bullets would go through if the ball was held stationary, but the force is reduced when the ball gives up ground it acts like 2 cars colliding, instead of a car vs a huge boulder. Both cars give each taking the impact, the boulder would have no give and the car takes all the energy.

After all you learned when making the original "foil ball"...you could quickly make another and shoot it with a single 270 round straight on...dead center to see what it can really take. Maybe make one 30% -40% smaller even. It wasn't a fair test starting with all the other rounds 1st & hitting it multiple times. The real test WAS the 270 round.

I wonder what the penetration would be with your compressed (not melted) ball. May not the voids serve to absorb some of the impact and thus actually make better armor? Perfect this and tanks get lighter.
@buckedupbuckeye
@buckedupbuckeye 4 жыл бұрын
I initially thought it would take a .270 but after multiple shots from each larger caliber I felt it was detrimental to further testing that would truly be honest to the .270 shot. If you was to shoot it with each caliber a single time, only turning it to a side that was not hit with each shot, I truly believe it could take a .270 without it being blown apart into multiple pieces. It most certainly would fuck it all up big time, but I don't think you would have to pick up multiple chunks off the ground after the .270. That was just my inference from when you initially asked what we thought would happen when shot once by each caliber. Nonetheless, even with the multiple shots and grazing on the sides, it still held up amazingly all the way thru. Although, if you were on target each time, from a fixed distanced that was determined fair for each caliber, I really believe the ball would have ended up still resembling a ball for the most part with only holes visible. This was a cool experiment though, it would be interesting to do this with different metals or different mixtures of metals like 65% one metal and 15% another and 20% of another just to see what may take place. Holy shit that's actually a good idea for a channel or this channel. That sure would keep me occupied on KZfaq lol

@dionlindsay2

Just wondering. The spherical shape makes it much more likely for the bullets to hit it a glancing blow, and so harder to say whether the ball would have stopped the bullets. But it would have been dangerous to make the ball stationary in some way, because the bullets would have been more likely to come back down the range than with the ball being free to roll and so not to directly oppose the flight of the bullet? I think that's what I mean, it's difficult to describe.
