Range testing some 8mm Mauser / 7.92x57mm hunting ammunition from Prvi Partizan. This load has a 139 grain soft point bullet. In this session I shoot for group size at 100 yards, as well as over the chronograph to check for velocity. The test rifle is an excellent condition German Kar98k Mauser from 1941.
Prvi Partizan is a Serbian manufacturer of ammunition and handloading components, based in Užice, Serbia.

I have noticed that PPU ammo has a consistency problem, some of their stuff shoots like match ammo and then it is like PPU stands for "Poor Performance Underpowered", I still buy their ammo, cost is the main reason and they make a wide selection of calibers that are hard to find. Dave

The company purposely under powers them. Modern 8mm is .323 diameter. While 8mm mauser before 1904 i think had a bore diameter of .318. So to keep those guys from blowing up there gun they knock em down to about 2100fps.

I've been mostly pleased with PPU ammo, this stuff was one of theit more disappointing products. A lot of us mil-surplus shooters would be in a tough spot if it were not for the array of odd stuff they supply.

I purchased a Yugo M48 several years ago, and the gun shop offered me some Prvi 8mm along with it. I had horrible accuracy like yourself and thought there was something wrong with my rifle. Since 8mm ammo isn’t common where I live, and wanting to give my rifle another chance, I searched for some 8mm reloading dies and some bullets to try a couple hand loads. HUGE difference, and I haven’t purchased any Prvi ammo since

What a beautiful rifle! I noticed tradeexcanada has 196 gr. PPU soft point at $27.95 right now. I'm a fan of PPU when I am trying to find obscure ammunition, and the price seems to be the most reasonable from this company. Thanks for the review.

It's just the way it goes sometimes. My 43 BNZ and Yugo M98 absolutely loves the German milsurp while my Ankara Mauser responds better to the cheap fed arm stuff. I am going to reload for this cartridge and hopefully find something they all respond to equally or relatively course. I might cast some 8mm bullets later on down the road, cheaper alternative.

I've tried this stuff out of a few rifles and so far none of them shot it well. I'm not especially concerned with that as the fired brass is worth what I paid for the ammo and it reloads very nicely. I shoot cast bullets a lot in the 8mm Mauser, the Lyman 323470 has proven an excellent bullet for the round.

Also with k98s, especially in the military configuration, the sights are for man sized targets. They were also made for the heavier bullet weights. My grandfather replaced the front and rear sights for sporter sights. Big difference in accuracy improvement. He favors the 150-170gr spirepoints

John Craig the battle sights of those rifles are made to be used with the milspec (pressure) ammo and not this weak low pressure stuff that is currently being offered commercially. Yeah I understand the bore diameter differences between the 1888 and 1898 contract rifles .318 and .323 diameters but a simple warning from the manufactures regarding this I would think would be sufficient. It's a shame as the 8mm Mauser round due to it's greater sectional density has great potential for use on medium to large antelope along with other large North American game. 196-198 gr fmjsp ammo loaded to 2700 fps velocities would be a great offering for this application.

PPU is much like Federal, Winchester, etc in that some of their loads perform well in some rifles and poorly in others. This 139 grain 8mm load is probably the worst performing PPU load I have used in this rifle, but other loads, like their 182 grain 7.62x54R has been an excellent performer in most of the rifles I have tried it in. In the end you have to try a particular load to see how it agrees with your particular rifle.

Short bearing surface probably didn't help, and as you said, low speed to boot. If I had a few more boxes, I'd be tempted to pull the bullets, and dump in some more powder to see if it helped any. Probably not, would be my guess.
@davidfriesen9512
@davidfriesen9512 3 жыл бұрын
Hi 314299. Maybe the powder charges weren't the same. And maybe the twist rate of the rifling is for heavier bullets. Maybe the bullets were .318 and not .323. Just speculating. If you do some hand loads I'm sure you can make an accurate and powerful loading. 😎👍

When I used Privi with a Hakim the round was way high but the reworked Russian from Canada ammo was on target. I had to turn my gas up to get the surplus to eject. I actually think the Privi was hotter just the the rifle felt when fired.

That stuff is definitely loaded under pressure. Not something at all that I would ever consider for hunting. Thus far the best commercial offering that I've seen is the Sellior & Bellot 196-198 gr offerings. These seem to be loaded at fairly close to milspec pressures. Most commercial 8mm loadings are loaded at low pressures I'm told to avoid civil liability If the .323 bore ammo is accidently loaded in the older .318 bore 1888 contract rifles. This may cause a dangerous pressure spike causing catastrophic failure. Sadly though this practice has made for ammo that performs at ANEMIC 30-30 levels and really underserves and does no justice to the 8mm Mauser 1898 contract rifles with the .323 bore. The 8mm Mauser remains a popular hunting rifle in Europe it's truly a shame that American ammo manufactures cannot seem to come to grips with issuing a warning about the dangers of using .323 diameter ammo in the .318 bore rifles and thus give us some decent offerings in 8mm Mauser ammo rather than the ANEMIC, WEAK crap that they currently offer.

These would probably be OK for hunting small deer, and I suspect that's what they were loaded for. These are certainly not PPU's best load, they do offer several other 8mm Mauser/7.9x57 loads that have much more powder.

PPU purposely underpowers their round. Modern 8mm has a bore diameter of .323, whereas the Gewehr 88 had a bore diameter of .318, so to help keep them from blowing their guns up because they dont know what they are doing.
@314299
@314299 4 жыл бұрын
That's a popular theory, however PPU also loads 8x57mm with 175, 185, 196, 198 and 250 bullets. All of these loads use .323" bullets and all are quite a lot more powerful than this light 139 grain load. I think this 139 grain load was made for European hunters who are after smaller breeds of deer where the full power is not required and would be unpleasant in a light sporting rifle.

Why is loaded 8x57 factory loaded ammo so abysmal? Handloading brings out it's best attributes. It is certainly an equal if not a better of a 30-06. Problem is the confusion on the J, JS and whatever subspecies and factories loading the the LCD. Killed lots of game and Tommies.

Lots of good full power loads for the 8x57 from the European companies, this PPU load is an odd example of a weak one. I suspect north American made 8mm Mauser was loaded down because 8x57 will fit and chamber in a 30/06.
