Forgotten Weapons

6 жыл бұрын

We have looked at a couple different Madsen light machine guns previously, but until today I have not had the chance to do any shooting with a fully automatic example of one. So I am taking this 1924 Bulgarian contract example out to the range wth some ammo!
The Madsen is a really interesting gun for several reasons, both historically and mechanically. It was the first light machine gun actually put into real combat use, seeing service in the Russo-Japanese War. It would go on to be used in World War One, World War Two, and too many smaller conflicts to count, right through to staying in service with Brazilian police units into the 1990s if not 2000s. A service life that long would be impressive for any machine gun, but particularly so for such an early an unusual design.
Mechanically, the Madsen is best described as a short recoil falling block action. It uses a top-mounted magazine which is offset to the left, and which has no feed lips (they are machined into the receiver instead). Cartridges are pushed laterally into the action by a rotary block below the magazine, and then rammed into the chamber by a long swinging arm (definitely take a look at my previous video on the Madsen disassembly to see how this works in detail). The breechblock pivots at the rear and drops down to lock behind the cartridge when firing. It does fire from an open bolt, although the semiautomatic conversions available in th eUS are converted to closed-bolt operation.
Firing the Madsen, it is clear that one is working with an early design. The grip is not nearly as comfortable and intuitive as later guns, and the trigger pull is rather heavy. It remains a durable and effective weapon, however, with its unique eccentricities standing in for the polish that would come with later guns like the ZB-26.

The Madsen light machine gun is what the AK-47 is to assault riffles. It developed a completely new weapons group and military doctrine and strategies. The Madsen was so successful, that it can still be seen used in small numbers by terrorist groups and pirates today. The last force to officially use the Madsen, is the Brazilian police, bc they like it's intimidating shooting sound and reliability, though have been used to lesser of an extent for the last couple of years. Let's see if AK-47 is still in official use by any force in 2067, then it will also have had a service life of 120 years. The Madsen LMG is the longest serving riffle in history.

Never knew the Madsen was lefty-friendly, I always had problems shooting the SA80 because I'm a lefty, so I had to teach myself how to operate and fire it all right-handed. If they'd made a GPMG belt-fed variant of the Madsen I would bet a testicle that they'd still be used today.

Ingolf Leibølle Actually, it’s still in service with Brazilian police as of May 2020. It’s a workhorse, and it does have its advantages for its cost of manufacture. It has a really short receiver, it’s easy to change barrels and calibers, it’s lefty friendly despite being a system with a top-mounted magazine, they seem sturdy and durable, and mags should be inexpensive because they don’t need feed lips. If you can accept the trade-offs, there are legitimate reasons to still use this thing. Not bad for what’s essentially the grandfather of the LMG.

The same's true for both British and American English, so don't think I'm being a bigot here - more of an equal opportunity critic. I'm all for culture, but also PURPOSE. And there is no PURPOSE for unpronounced letters. Let's not forget that it was the French elitist oppressor class who corrupted their language with unpronounced letters. I wouldn't be surprised if the same ilk of aristocratic parasites were responsible for that same phenomenon across all languages and cultures. *Note:* Ian, being a Frankaboo, could probably corroborate on the fact that it was their oppressor class who ruined their language.

It's kinda crazy to think that Polícia Civil do Estado do Rio de Janeiro are still using Madsens (albeit ones rechambered in 7.62x51 NATO) to this day in the street fighting of Rio de Janeiro. And a lot of people might think, "Well, they're just making do with relics because they have to." No, no. They actually want the Madsens, believe it or not. Back in 2008 there was an attempt to phase out the entirety of the old Madsens that they had and the Rio police weren't having it. They WANTED to keep the old MGs because they were extremely reliable and apparently Rio criminals get scared because they associate Madsen muzzle reports with police tactical units and they know that the police are coming and mean business. So you'll still see video footage from even just a few years back in 2018 of guys taking this into the street and using them in combat. To think, those guns have been used by multiple generations of Rio police now. For nearly a century (the Madsens started getting used sometime in the 1930s, but the guns are definitely older than that and were Brazilian army surplus). And they're still going strong and even the guys using them which probably could get access to much more expensive and newer weaponry don't want to replace it.

First Geography Now! uploads their episode on Japan, now this? Oh happy morning. Also, BOPE in Brazil still use these, with a jerry-rigged fore-grip stuck under the barrel for firing on the move. lol An off-set magazine on top makes so much sense to me that I wonder why more designs didn't incorporate it.

Madsen was sold to a number of different countries. These different versions differed very little, usually only in terms of the type of ammunition they used. In addition to Denmark and Russia, Madsen was bought by France, Germany and Austria-Hungary during the First World War. Rexer Edit The Rexer Arms Company in London was licensed to manufacture Madsen's weapons in the United Kingdom and Canada. When Rexer did not follow the agreement but also tried to sell the weapons to other countries, it was terminated and weapons and machines were withdrawn. However, Madsen was often called "Rexer" in Britain.

Denmark did not sell these guns during the 1. World war. The combattents used their eksistent pre war stock. Danish neutrality prevented any sales !

They are still being used by some policemen in the rio the janeiro. Some months ago I saw a picture of a member of a "special" Task force from rio leaning against a wall and aiming down sights with a madsen that had its barrel cutted to shorten it.

What an intimidating weapon. To think it fires 30-06 makes it that much more intense. Made back when firepower and bullet size determined who was a stronger military.

Well, it really didn’t, but generals of the era didn’t understand that really until World War 1 and even World War 2 gave the doctrines of the day a real trial by fire.

like you said in one of your other madsen videos, the "d" is silent in madsen (which you were pretty much spot on pronouncing in the other video)

Perfect rate of fire if you ask me. Not too fast that you burn though ammunition but fast enough to where you can cover an area in lead effectively.

I guess I thought they looked a bit flimsy because the stamping is pretty simple, no reinforcing ribs anything on the magazine. Thicker material would make up for that.

Astounding this didn't get picked up by a bigger Military, can you imagine if you had this, in substantial numbers, at the beginning of World War I in the hands of the French for example?

germany and russia had them when WW1 began. But the danish goverment stoped all export of the gun to germany and russia when the war began. Due to the danish policy of neutrality during the war Germany and Russia used their guns untill they where worn out and fell apart.
