We're starting a new series this week with effects artist Frank Ippolito: Shop Tips! Frank shares his favorite tools, techniques, and processes that he's acquired over the years running his own effects and fabrication shop. This week, we kick off with a seemingly simple task: pouring liquid material out of one gallon and five gallon containers. Here's the smart way to do it.
Have a shop tip of your own? Share it in the comments below!

Oh my gosh, thank you so much!!! I just wasted a whole bunch trying to pour some in a bottle, it was everywhere, all over the counter, in the sink and on my clothes. You are a lifesaver, honestly, you should get an award, REALLY. God bless you so big. Love, Jude from Kentucky ✝️🥀🐎

Thank you for the tip on how to pour fluids out of containers. I was that one who was pouring it the wrong way. One thing I use are the containers that have lunch meats in them. They are sealed in a plastic bag inside of the tub. The tubs are good for small pieces you want to keep. Have a great day !

The two part finish I use on guitars comes in "paint can" style containers and since I'm typically using 10oz or less at a shot, I use a larger medical syringe. No can tipping required and I can accurately control how much I pull out for mixing. Obviously you want to get a bunch and dedicate/label one for each product you use, as well as make sure whatever it is won't eat the plastic or rubber parts.

Years ago I was dumpster diving and found some wire double level racks for retail like you might use on a point of sale. We used as shoe racks for 15 plus years. When I retired them they sat around for 3 years and I noticed they might make good side saddle rack on my tool boxes. So I put one on a tool box but it sat at a 10 degree angle off the box due to some locking tabs so I grabbed the Dremel and cut them off now they fit nice and flat each will hold 8 cans of spray paint and many other cans or bottles. The point is there is a lot of good usefulness left in scrap retail just like with Adam's aircraft beverage cart glue station or the many diy sort-a- more. Also if anyone uses a into polisher Wal-mart has a brand of cat litter that is ground corn cob half the price of corn cob at a hardware store.

Man I WISH I had a garage shop. I have a kitchen table covered in newspaper with a really old cutting board, and a tiny patio (also covered in newspaper) for anything with any kind of smell or splatter. Spray painting wooden dowels outside while it's windy isn't exactly fun. I have some friends who only have their living room/bedroom floor, or one friend used a tiny secondhand coffee table and a blue tarp on his balcony to make his wood working shop. Apartment life is fun.

Is useful even for juice in tetrapack :)
@HeyJD123
@HeyJD123 8 жыл бұрын
+MrSerrrg88 It's not that useful for light containers. With light things like UHT milk, you can just pour it normally and control the tilt just fine. The reason why it's good for those big heavy containers is because it's very hard to control the tilt with all that weight behind it.
@Hugh.Manatee
@Hugh.Manatee 8 жыл бұрын
+HeyJD -With those juice tetrapacks it's the fact that air can freely move over the poured liquid to repressurize the carton. It sloshes less if you pour from the top.
@HeyJD123
@HeyJD123 8 жыл бұрын
AdenineMonkey Yeah nah. The diameter of the hole stays the same size no matter which way you pour it. The only thing that changes is that angle of the tilt before the liquid comes out. It becomes easier to control the tilt (for heavy containers) when you turn the container around. But that doesn't allow more airflow or liquid to go through automatically. It's completely useless to try and get more tilt control for something as light as a tetra pack. It makes no difference. In fact, because of the height difference when turning the tetra pack on its side, it could produce more spills than just pouring it normally.

Before putting the lid back on superglue, tap the bottle on a hard surface. This breaks the surface tension in the nozzle so it doesn't then dry out and block the tip the next time you use it.

I'm ~40 and it is not that many years ago i suddenly figured this out. It just never enters your mind, i actually noticed it first with full oversized juice and milk cartons. Years of sloshing liquids all over the place. My dad doesn't do it either, no one i knows knows this little trick. Seems so obvious. BTW; in the top position, the surface can slosh very violently, when it's "upside down", spout down, you are taking liquid from the bottom where there are no waves... Those surface waves can easily spurt a 2m long squirt, or slosh acetone on your face, those fast waves die fast so after tipping, wait few seconds.... ;)

Use the free paint sticks from Home Cheapo for mixing 2-part stuff like epoxies, molding and casting, bondo, tartar sauce, what have you. Tape the shop vac to the output of your sander for superclean sanding. Wrap hardwood with painter's tape before crosscutting to prevent splintering. Stroke a magnet several times with your screwdriver to magnetize it. Or any steel tool. When you pour motor oil into the engine, hold the container with the spout at the top and you can get closer and lower to the engine. OR, for a pro tip: hold your thumb over the opening of the spout, turn it upside down and let it go when the spout is IN the access hole. Not a drop will spill. Now, wash your hands. Wet sand coats of paint on metal with 800 or higher grit between light coats. Clean glass with 000 steel wool and glass cleaner. Sew, glue or tape a magnet to the back of your glove to hold screws or small metal parts.
