An amazing tour of an amazing shop. In this episode we will visit with Walter Clements of Belvedere, TN and tour his operational machine shop collection of machines from ranging from the 1850's through 1920's. Walter has a shop full of beautifully restored machines that are all operational and all in actual use. You will not want to miss this one!

The best part about this shop is that he still does real work in it. Its easy after being around modern machines to not take old equipment like this seriously, but it worked back when it was new, and still does today.

He has to have a maid! Not only was it ordered, neat and clean, everything was dust free and polished!!!! Lovely lovely place, and what a great guy. My only downside comment would be, since he is nearly 80, I hope to heaven he has some plan for the safety and well being of his shop and gear for the future. It would be a sorrow of immense depth if that stuff was not maintained and loved! Nicely done video Keith, you knew just when to prod him and when to listen.

The funny thing is that Walter told me he spend a week cleaning up the shop getting ready for me to come and do the video! Walter does have a plan for where most of the machines will end up going. The collection will probably not stay intact but the machines will go to where they need to go to in order to properly be preserved.

That's good to hear. In this day and age you would't expect that collection to stay together. But some of those items, particularly that pre-civil war lathe, need to be preserved!

Keith was in a museum, just privately owned and not advertised to the public. There are many more of them around. I know of at least two in my area. If you hang around with people who love old machines you will get invitations to shops with beautiful old equipment, much of it operational and regularly used, which beats most public museums. You can often get a private tour. Be sure to support them any way you can...

A man and shop from a time when every man had to think, a university that really trained there students. As a retired heavy equipment mechanic I have growled many times at engineers who had no idea how there designs would interact with others, making repairs more difficult than needed.
@jasonwood7340
@jasonwood7340 2 жыл бұрын
You, and damn near everyone that's ever used a wrench on a car have all had "what were they thinking" go through their minds. It's funny how you can tell when a mechanic actually designed something, like the retaining lock on the serpentine tensioner pulley on my truck. Pull on the belt (hard) and push on the lock tab and the tensioning pulley locks untensioned. No weird combination of wrenches or breaker bars and busted knuckles!!

Mr. Clements is a remarkable gentleman ! I fell in love with line-shaft shops when I was picking up some belt dressing for my Barber-Coleman surface grinder . I walked up the steps to the second-floor of an old warehouse and was immediately met by the smell of tanned leather and the clickity-clack of a dozen leather belt hinges of the leather belts being broken-in and tested from the overhead line-shafts at the belt shop . I'll never forget that experience and the sensory images .

Beautifully done! Thank your for this! I took drawing in my first semester back in '81. Not every college has abandoned good education. When I attended LeTourneau in the late 80's earning my electronics degree, I had to work Machine Tools and cross-trained in Welding engineering and mechanical engineering as well. They still require that as I understand. Well rounded curriculum.

Keith, I was all set to ask you what all of those rings were for when Walter finally explained what they were for. It's truly amazing how clever and innovative people were during the industrial revolution. It never ceases to amaze me when I see machines this old that can easily compete with all of our modern technology. I guess that with the exception of speed, these old boys can do anything a new machine can. Superb video and Walter is a natural. I bet he was one hell of a teacher! Regards, Rich

What an amazing shop and tour, I so enjoy hearing the history of all these wonderful old machines, its serious Americana. Walter is a find gentleman and we should be grateful for those like him that are the keepers of these machines and their history.
