The local malls are home to 28-year-old Nicola and a spending habit gone wild. Nicola shops so often that even the window displays are familiar friends. Despite earning £30k a year, Nicola's compulsion to splash out has landed her in £20k worth of debt.

My mom and I used to go shopping together. I really enjoyed that time with her. When she passed away suddenly it really threw me into a depression and I went shopping all the time. Now I’m deep in debt and struggling to get out while still mourning my mother. So I can understand going shopping to escape. I’m now working on paying off my debt and becoming more minimal in my daily life and possessions.

Her severely disabled little brother was placed into foster care after her father passed away. What wasn't addressed was trauma from losing two loved ones.

It's also a way to cope with anxiety even when you feel happy with your relationships and your life in general. There are people who are anxious because of childhood trauma and they know exactly what the problem is, but shopping gives them a momentary distraction.

I would agree, some people live a very superficial life and can be shallow in certain ways but extremely compassionate and generous in others. Sometimes people just really don't see that the behavior of consumer culture is not healthy. That the life they are living through their superficial habits (expensive products, makeup, convenience, perfect or trendy appearance etc.) is not sustainable and can never lead to long term fulfillment or deep rooted joy, contentment and happiness. If the standard for fitting in and being welcomed is being up to date on every new trend, that's a miserable time. It isn't authentic human connection. The only way to fill our hearts with joy and to feel a sense of purpose, clarity, and direction... is authentic human connection. Expressing our emotions and perspective to others and having them listen and shows us they understand, they care and relate and that it doesn't make us weak. One of the most powerful ways for an individual to heal from a tragedy is to share their emotions with someone who understands or even gone through it themselves. If it werent for one choosing to be vulnerable, both miss out on a powerful opportunity to grow and heal through human connection. Also when someone asks "Whats your hobby", and you say shopping....then its kind of obvious there is a problem. You might go to the shop every once in a while to pick something up for your hobby but if your hobby is literally shopping... someone had to wake her up from the fantasy. Those two did it so gracefully and humbly, they were gentle when necessary and a bit more in her face when they felt she would be open to the message they were trying to send. I could see how they actually cared and listened, wonderful documentary. 5 stars, share it with your grandmother she will love this material.

I hate actual shopping, but I love window-shopping. Window-shopping lets me look at all kinds of new stuff, imagine in my head whether an item would benefit me or not, and then leave the store empty-handed without having wasted money on something I really didn't need and didn't have room for anyway. With online shopping, there's a certain satisfaction about the "add to cart" button and then the "empty cart" button. Yes, I have commitment issues.

I used to not leave the house without makeup for years and when I decided to go makeup free... it took getting used to... weeks in fact before I no longer felt mortified in public. But after that my skin settled down because it was getting cleansed gently, moisturised and not rubbed or coated with products. I wear and reapply sunscreen more often and now I have a nice healthy glow. I love that its ME and was surprised I ended up liking what I have naturally. I wear a little makeup a few times a week where I want to.. a little adjustments, a little colour is the prettiest thing you can wear, not a whole new face. Once you get used to not wearing makeup, you press reset and dont like the feeling and look of lots of it

There's a massive environmental impact on over consumption also. Mass produced landfill manufactured by unfortunate souls for our benefit. Skin care full of Palm oil, chemicals and micro beads, not to mention animal tested, plastic shopping bags, packaging.... the list goes on! And if it doesn't ultimately make you happy then at the end of the day what is the point? Sad really
@stevepassmore5566
@stevepassmore5566 4 жыл бұрын
The "Blood Sweat and..." tv series was a series that really opened my eyes to over consumption. There are many series now in the same vein. I think children should be shown them in school routinely. We can shop, spoil ourselves and have a good time but we need an awareness of how best to do it. I also think young generations need to be schooled on "global debt". It's far easier to have your debt wiped than it has ever been. Going "bankrupt" used to be something people actively avoided. I have watched a doco about young people having debt written off and their attitude was quite cavalier. Their philosophy was it was so much fun until it crashed down on me, I'll be inconvenienced for a time but I'm young and I'll recover. Not quite sure who they think is going to be responsible for the debt they didn't pay ?? Banks will just recoup by raising fees for everyone else. Teaching responsibility is key and kids need good role models in their life

My assistant who came with me could not understand why I didn't try on the whole store but I only needed one pair of black heels! Very touching seeing her and her mother talk about the feelings they have about her father's death. The feeling of being protected when he was there. Its is interesting because she mentions that she likes more under eye makeup to hide herself, as if literally wearing a mask as a barrier, and she also mentioned the clothing protecting her. I think she is a softy squishy heart needing to feel and heal. I think counseling long term would help a lot.

It's definitely helpful to be realistic and seeing things from the other persons point of view, not always putting them down or shooting down everything they consider buying for fear they will just impact your own spending habits... I've had a complicated relationship with budgeting and wanting to afford a life that I couldn't. My partner was helpful in showing me what was realisticly affordable and what wasn't, and I helped him to see what is 'normal and practical' spending that I shouldn't be scrutinized for as long as we're transparent with each other about our finances. It's helped me not to hide practical everyday purchases from him that i started being paranoid would agitate and upset him... he acknowledged that this was not a healthy way to treat our finances and we've both been able to be more honest and work on ourselves. We have a MUCH healthier and trusting relationship now. ❤️

This is my wife(figuratively speaking,) and she's 56. I'm retired and- encourage is a weak word- her to SAVE money for our retirement. But she'll go to Walmart/Sam's and spend $200-300 on junk, books she'll read one then trash, toys for the grandkids. We purchased a home a year ago which dipped deep into our savings; in a year we've managed to "save" about -$3000. No amount of nagging seems to make a difference. I'm at wits end. Pushing 57 she has at most 8 more years to work.

I think a lot of people shop just as a form of entertainment….. maybe if they really thought about it they could find something else to entertain themselves with that doesn’t cost a lot of money. Also using cash when you shop registers in your brain whereas using a credit card doesn’t seem to have the same effect…. That is a known fact.

It might be helpful for Nicola to use some of her shopping time to volunteer ...use her make up skills to help women recovering from cancer and needing a self-esteem boost....or reading to sick children. Like so many people who suffer from obsessive behavior they only think about themselves. How am I feeling, what do others think of me, how do I look....? Perhaps spending some time helping people with real, serious problems would help her to put hers into perspective.

Nicola, you are beautiful! I wish someone would have told me years ago.... It’s not how much money you make, it’s how much you keep that matters. A fool and their money easily part... that was me and that is why people who win the lottery often are broke again in three years. No but in all seriousness I get it, an addiction is a compulsion.... it begins to own us. It gives us a rush. Then we get to show it all off. I use to buy clothes constantly... always trying to dress so that I felt good about myself, and so that I’d somehow be more likeable. It’s all an illusion. I finally woke up and realized that some of the people I love the most don’t really put much time, money, or effort into their appearance. They were loving and fun to be around. Then one day, I realized I could have paid for a house already or at least halfway if I had not spent so much money on stuff, clothes, makeup, etc.. Now working from home, dressing up is a thing of the past as is buying fancy clothes. As a result, I’ve managed to save for a down payment for my next home. It feels so good!!! Now, I shop at thrift stores and I’m truly happy keeping rather spending my money. When the bank account balance rises, it really is exciting. I stopped shopping to fill a void and now have hobbies that keep me out of stores wasting my hard earned money. I wish I had learned this long long ago. Regrets... but I don’t regret finally giving up smoking or vaping as of 1 year. I never thought that was possible. You can do it too! I used hypnosis on my phone... listened to it over and over til it finally stuck.

You smoke and use anti-aging products. Smoking long enough will give you more wrinkles when you're older. So then you'll want botox, especially around the lips. Try to stop smoking. And start loving yourself a lot, Nicola. Exactly the way you are. That'll do the most for you.

I can’t believe this therapist keeps bringing up the mom in comparison as to “how” she grieves and release repressed anger. That would anger me if I had to hear someone compare my mom to me. Further, I wish he would have taken the “control” for “perfection” route. Compulsions arise when we feel powerless and are attempting to maintain control or a “put togetherness”. Shopping helps her feel that to minimize the areas where she is lacking control (I.e, father dying, family breaking apart, overspending, strained connection with boyfriend, one dimensional relationship with mom, etc). It’s a “safe” form of control even if there are negative consequences… those haven’t happened yet so they are out of sight and therefore out of mind. She will feel the anger later in life when the vices lack the spark but the key is to discharge the vice.

Funny how it never occurred to her that if she'd stop smoking her skin would look less wrinkly. She does look older because she smokes. She looked heaps better with LESS makeup. I'm sad no one told her not to try the smiling trick with the blush. You would put it on when you're unsmiling at the highest points of your cheeks.
