Michael and Laural don’t see eye-to-eye on anything - except they both agree they’re very deep in debt. Laural blames Michael’s huge student loan, but ignores the impact of her shopping addiction. Gail is going to teach them to stop pointing fingers at each other and start building a better life for their son.

I love to shop...at thrift stores...I have one pair of flip flops one pair of sneakers and one pair of boots. My guilty pleasure is swords...as in all swords of stuff 😆 I save on clothes but splurge on blades. I'm single...for that matter...unless I can find a knight ..doesn't have to be in shining armor or any armor at all. I demand a trial by combat..so that kinda trims the dating pool a bit to Renaissance fair people or dungeon and dragon role players 😆 Just don't roll a critical and blow your budget

As a young wife and mother with a strict budget I remember going to the grocery store with a list and a calculator! We bought our (very nice) clothes and most kids toys at Goodwill and donated them back when we were done with them. We never attempted to impress anybody or "keep up with the Jones". As a stay at home mother I had no car. We didn't pay for cable and had antenna t.v. We never went out to eat and a rare treat was picking up a pizza or carry out Chinese food. My husband had student loans that we paid off in 2 years BEFORE we had the kids. We didn't go on expensive vacations because camping was free, fishing was free, going to the park or the beach was free, the library was free. I'm now 60, my husband is retired, we built our dream home on 5 wooded acres and we don't have to worry about money. Yes, it IS still doable.

Complains about his debt but buys 25 pair of shoes for herself. Then threatens him with separation. I feel bad for him, he's been controlled far too much. This is why I reserve my respect for poor/low income households. No one I knew in poor/low income communities where I lived and purposely moved back to had debt like this. I couldn't imagine owing my friends even $2 let alone $5,000. What happened to people offering their spare time doing side jobs for friends etc. ? It happens here in the community I am from where it's not uncommon to see a man with no car but pushing a mower and knocking on doors to WORK. Also many of my neighbors have their cars already paid off. Not the newest but reliable. Many of my neighbors own homes. Learn to live low so you can do more faster.

Interesting yet true viewpoint. The individuals I know who don't make a lot wouldn't be approved for a credit card so they use cash or debit card. They save up for a newer (not new) car, if the house is paid for, they make arrangements to make sure the taxes are paid 2x a year. Their personal items are limited... things they have had for 20+ years in some cases (except for newer electronics which are cheap nowadays). They don't own multiples of these items, either. They do what they can to survive because income is sparse. So while people look down on their neighborhoods, talk about poor people and complain (in some cases) that they mooch off of the government; they AREN'T the ones holding large amounts of consumer debt and filing bankruptcy. It's likely the bigger reason why those making more money aren't willing to part with it to help others (donations or other programs)... their debt is EXCESSIVELY high!

If you are in debt, The first thing to get rid of is your credit card/s (cut them up, they are a crutch) and find a second job if necessary. Write down monthly expenses. Food transportation etc...Take out money from bank for the month. Do this a couple of months and you will notice your habits changing. Do not buy coffee at Second cup or anything that isn't a necessity!! You will also learn the difference between need and want pretty quickly. You need groceries and don't need another pair of shoes 😉

Really bugs me when she says she owes her parents $57,000 and smiles, tht they missed their condo fees lots of times and smiles. Wipe the smile off. These people worked as hard if not harder for their money and you mooch off them or just don't pay what you owe.

I think we have to take into consideration - sometimes we don't get it until we get. Money management is learned. Save money and than purchase should not be a foreign concept.

So he makes 46k while he makes 14k… she spends like their income is 100k+…she’s the primary problem and he’s a push over. I think the only reason they’re together is out of convenience of point of time when they settled for each other…she definitely doesn’t love him

Babies need diapers, carseat (law) and a onesie plus food (bottles or natural). Use kitchen towels secured with a clothespin or diaperpin from behind as bibs or buy a single wipe clean plastic bib. Toys can be minimal or made from household items like pots, spoons, cardboard boxes various sizes, etc Everything else is optional. Babies can sleep in dresser drawer or laundry basket and bathe in kitchen sink until older. Then put mattress on floor for safety. All this baby/toddler/kid gear are recent unnecessary inventions. Western parents spend too much money on unnecessary things!

I hope this couple makes it but I have doubts: there doesn't seem to be much spark between them. At the moment I don't think they could afford to divorce. I hope if they sell their condo that the use the proceeds to pay off their debt and pit the rest of the money away to earn interest so that they have a more sizeable down payment when they are ready to buy a house. Before that they need to have a greater sense that the relationship will last. It wouldn't surprise me that once they pay off the debts they spit up.

I hope they can move forward together in a positive way. I see love between them, but like so many couples financial strain tears them apart. I think they can make the changes necessary as long as they work together as a team and be romantically kind to each other. It's so awesome you starting an education fund for your son. Best wishes to both of you.

How do you have that much student debt and then think a line of credit is a good idea? I have student debt and it’s my only debt, the payments on that alone are enough to make me extremely strict when it comes to any other forms of credit.

Architectural technologist is a support position requiring skills in both area. They can be involved in all aspect of the project and can work for different entities including government. The average amount of money is around 60K depending on experience and other factors so 46K around 2005/6 appears reasonable. Hope he's making more now.
