When you visit Chiang Mai the same day the premiere Cactus & Succulent Fair is going on-you have to go, right? Well, I'm glad I did, because this was an opportunity to capture the late Chanin Thorut and my friend Home share their joy for cacti and succulents.
***
This episode is devoted to botanist, Chanin Thorut. Chanin started his love of plants in early childhood-and later become a pioneer in several plant groups, including Hoya, Bromeliaceae, orchids, and cacti and succulents. During his professional career, he imported many foreign species for propagation, along with writing articles about them in leading house or gardening magazines in Thailand.
Chanin also explored many remote forests and discovered several rare, undescribed species, including a brand new Bulbophyllum from Khao Luang National Park in Nakornsri Thammarat Province, and later named it after Dr. Tem Smitinand as Bulbophyllum smitinandii Seidenf. & Thorut 1996.
In term of Bromeliads, Chanin is well known and a leading authorities in Hybridizing Dyckia. He imported the first batch from many different places and creating new hybrids in his backyard. Some of his well known hybrids are Dyckia 'Charlot', Dyckia 'Pharaoh', Dyckia 'Cleopatra', and also named several sports from other's seedlings or offsets that look very special; for example D. 'Diamond Crown', D. 'Yakuza' , and D. 'Tsunami'.
Chainin joined us on our trip but didn't come up the mountain, as he wasn't feeling well. He was later rushed to the hospital in Chiang Mai during the hike and passed away hours later at the hospital from heart failure on October 29. Chanin always shared his collection and thoughts to beginners.
He co-authored the ‘Succulent’ Book with Pijaya Vachajitpan and Pavaphon Supanantananont. It was later translated into Japanese.

Hello, I,m from Thailand . I'm pretty sure that a lot of people have been missing him. It would be an honor to share your video to the Thai Cactus and succulent communities. Our groups are getting bigger and bigger these day. I would love to share this if you don't mind. Thank You so much.

Feel free to share. I would love that; and I think the community there will appreciate that. I am also getting the previous episode translated in Thai, which I think should help, but it's such a complex language-on top of the botanical nomenclature and botany terms, that it will take about two weeks for them to get the subtitles in. But feel free to share. Thank you.

What I appreciate about you, Summer, is your genuine desire to esteem others better than yourself. You bring so many of the world’s unknown wise and caring sentinels of our green cohabitants on this planet to the forefront. I truly enjoyed meeting Chanin and watching this very personal side of three individuals fellowshipping over their passion. So inspiring. You and all whose lives were touched by the gift of his presence are in my prayers. 💚

Thanks so much for your sentiments. I share with people that what gets me out of bed every morning is not what I know, but what I don't know, and that's one of the ways how we cultivate an engaging and inspirational life. I'm so pleased this channel can be a platform to share my and others passion; and pleased that We could... In some small way... Document Chanin's passion before he passed from this Earth.

I like to believe that when we pass and get to heaven. We're allowed to paint our own canvas. Kind of like the movie What Dreams May Come. Although I don't like the part about suicides. I believe if we are so tortured in life we may get a second chance at it. When you say in a better place I pray we get to enjoy the thing's we're truely passionate about in life. We're surrounded by those we love. May he be among all of the thing's and people that brought him so much joy and happiness. 🙏 🌵🌸🌿

I really love this video with Home and Dr. Chanin. They're cool to be with when you're scouring plant markets. I'm amazed at Dr. Chanin to identity these plants at a drop of a hat. It's such a shame that the plant world lost him too soon. Also, It's my first time to see so many kinds of euphorbia. The only ones I know are those huges ones that had been a rave years ago. They've become miniatured as i saw in your past videos. The Thais really are amazing when it comes to plants. I love watching videos of their fish market too and it also makes me think they really give importance to both agriculture and aquaculture to produce such amazing plants (and fishes). Thanks for this video. Looking forward for the next one.

My Ariocarpus were all ordered from Miles To Go in Arizona. I had them all planted in mineral soil (basically sand and granite dust) , sitting in bright sunlight for at least 4hrs. daily. Water only late May through end of September once a month. Fertilize 1/4 label directions wit synthetic only once or twice a growing season. Mine grew quickly! Patience is key!😉👍
