After a review several months ago of this Milwaukee M12 FUEL Right Angle Die Grinder model 2485, we wanted to take a moment to clear the air and explain some things. It's pretty typical that the Milwaukee M12 2485 die grinder gets used on a daily basis in our shop. After posting a quick social media video on doing some body repair, we noticed a common theme in some comments. People were complaining that they couldn't remove the bits from the collet.
They use a self-release collet on the Milwaukee 2485 M12 die grinder, and it does work a little differently. If you're used to typical collets on pneumatic die grinders, this can cause a little frustration. Take a deep breath and learn from our mistakes. We too had a rough time when we first received the 2485 Milwaukee.
Using a wrench, you break the collet-nut loose, like any typical collet, and the nut frees up...you can easily turn it with your fingers. However, the bit / shaft is still fastened tightly in the tool and collet. Don't hit it with a hammer or put it in the vice. Just continue loosening the nut, with your fingers, until it hits a tough spot again (probably 3 or 4 turns). Now, use the same wrench to loosen the nut again, the second time will completely free-up the bit from the collet. These self-release collets have been used for a few years in routers but we're just seeing it in our metal-working and automotive worlds.

It's not a pain to do it, it is the fact that Milwaukee did not explain how to remove it in the manual is what I have an issue with. I had the same problem when I bought it almost 2 years ago, always went with the corded because I did not feel like wasting time trying to remove the bit. This works, thanks. Milwaukee should compensate you or the very least personally thank you.

Not to be "that guy" but it isn't mentioned in the manual because if you buy this tool you're expected to know how to use it. I get that not everyone does, but if that's the case get an air angle grinder

@@gojiman1649If you can get that not everyone already knows how to use a tool before buying it, why can't you agree that the instruction manual is the best place to explain it? There aren't many features in this tool, and a single page with some basic IKEA-style illustrations would go a long way. They don't need to teach you how to grind down welds or cut off plastic flashing, sure, but what is the harm in writing a couple of sentences about a feature that clearly isn't obvious to everyone?

I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read kzfaq.infoUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.

Based on the title, I first thought this video would discuss the "cut-out under load" problem. After watching this video, it quickly dawned on me this is another issue entirely. Had to laugh out loud, though, because this "mystery" is exactly how the collets on both of my Makita Die Grinders work (GD0800C and 810C low rpm). At least Makita states this in their manual. Milwaukee just needs to highlight this in their manual. Thanks for the laughs!

THOSE COLLETS ARE WONDERFUL and a PROFESSIONAL feature common to the glorious 5196 Milwaukee beloved of the welding industry. That would be why Milwaukee didn't explain it because they just assumed. I carry two open end wrenches on a small carabiner in my abrasive bucket. I subscribed because you deserve support for mentioning it. Once broken free if the shaft of your attachment sticks tapping it towards the tool will become second nature. I maintained a fleet of the 5196 and bought two for myself (they're so tough I buy 5196 used). Those collect kick ass and are much better than a chuck. Check the part number as it may match 5196 parts worth knowing if you get one. Now if only Milwaukee would offer a cordless 5196...

The Milwaukee collet is actually a better design. Not unique to Milwaukee tools however. It's used in commercial NC tool holders for better grip and more importantly better concentricity to the tool spindle. The longer taper fingers don't let go even with taping cross ways (which is bad for precision spindles) so the positive extraction feature is needed. Sometimes faster is not better.

It's made this way because the collet is on a shallower angle for more grip which makes it stick so it has to be self releasing . This design also requires much less torque when tightening to grip enough. Most people still crank it down too much anyway, it only takes a little.

I thought surely Milwaukee must have put this info in the manual, so I checked. Unbelievably, they failed to put the accessory removal procedure in the manual! All it says is: "Reverse the procedure when removing the accessory." I just got mine and its apparently the only one ever made with a floppy paddle lever. In other words, it flops a good 1/2" away from the power switch instead of staying in contact with it like every other one I've ever seen. I think maybe the roll pin is too small and not creating enough friction. I'll see if I have one slightly bigger in diameter to punch in there.

You have to snap the collet in the nut before putting the collet in the die grinder. That’s the key.

I figured the collet out But the thing keeps shutting itself down to grind a little bit and it shuts off grade a little bit it shuts off what’s up with that

This is the price you pay for a superior "R" type collet. They grip like crazy with just a little torque, and won't vibrate loose.

My issue is that I can’t fit any 1/4” burr in mine. Chose the straight die grinder over a Snap On air die grinder and I can’t fit a got damn 1/4” shaft burr in it.

@@Jenuin well I gotta say I've been beatin the hell out of this thing using it on grinding metal, sanding off rust, cleaning car rims, and much more, and this thing is a beast. Strongly recommend it. It ain't gonna last more than 5 minutes unless u have a 6.0 or a 4.0 battery tho

I don't get why people use the die grinder for sanding. Ok, you can get the milwakee sander/polishing tool for using sand paper and brillo, then use the die grinder for burrs. Unless you want the extra RPM, IMO the polisher tool is 'beefier' for 'pushing'.

wow, it stuck. I don't know, why don't I just turn it more. Oh wow it worked. Why do people not try to turn it more before they say the tool is broken.

1/4" roloc stems get stuck in the collet for me, I have to use PB blaster and a mallet to tease them out

That should not happen. Next time, make sure your collet is embedded in the nut (as 1-piece rather than 2-pieces) before you put it back in the grinder. Thanks for watching.

Make sure u are using the right size collet. When i bought mine i had to swap it over to the 1/4 collet cause it had a smaller one in it.

I understand now after watching your video but what about how to release the collet if I installed it as 2 pieces and not 1? What is solution to fix this?? No one seems to have answered or addressed this issue.

My m12 die grinder keeps shutting off when I put it under any kind of load. Are you hearing other people experiencing this problem?.... At first I thought it was the battery but I tried several different fully charged batteries in it and it would do the same thing every time.

It depends on how much pressure you're applying. You can't really lean on it too hard. What type of jobs are you using it on? Thanks for watching.

Apparently there are a lot of die grinder users out there who have never operated a router. Router collets have worked that way forever.
