It’s July 6, 2024. You’ve done a delightful and comprehensive job. I am 12 hours into a 71-hour audiobook of Les Miserables and absolutely enchanted by it and your enthusiasm:)

He's known accross the world for Les Misérables but in France he's studied in school mostly for his poems, indeed, such as Les Contemplations, and his theatre plays like Hernani. When it comes to depicting French society and its social struggles in the second half of the19th century, teachers also often recommand to read Emile Zola's novels.

Nice to come across a fellow Victor Hugo fan! He and Edgar Allan Poe are my two favorite authors. Of all of Hugo's works, my favorite has to be his novel "The Man Who Laughs" ("L'Homme qui Rit"). It's set in England in the early 1700s and tells the story of a doomed romance between Gwynplaine, a disfigured clown, and Dea, a blind girl. And of course, it includes Hugo's classic themes of political intrigue and corruption, the people standing up for themselves, common spirituality vs. organized religion, love vs. lust, etc. I highly recommend it. I love it so much I've even written a play adaptation. In my opinion, it should be up there along with his more well-known works like "Notre Dame de Paris" and "Les Miserables". This was a great video. Thank you so much for sharing.
