Thumb releases are becoming more and more popular and I get a lot of questions on the best way to shoot them. There isn't one "right" way, so in this video I go over the three most popular methods people use to break a clean shot with one

Sounds like a healthy technique for executing a clean shot with a thumb. Always appreciate your perspective. It’s been key in my development.

Yes, it pulls it offline for me as well. This is solid advice with bows that don't have much sponge.

This was a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing! Trying to find the correct amount of back tension without pulling the bow all over the place was very frustrating. I simply could not achieve consistency pulling through the shot. I tried relieving some pressure on my index finger to rotate the release as a method. Worked some of the time but developed target panic and began jerking the release. Your method allows for a surprise release without commanding the shot or pulling my bow all over the target. Thank you!

Great explanation of this type of release. Good video! Keep your arm and head still until arrow hits target. One of the first things I learned and still practice a long time ago.

I shot thumb trigger releases since the late 1980’s until a couple of years ago when I had to switch to an index finger because of arthritis in my fingers. I have always commanded the trigger at the shot. Like you said, the only thing that should move at the shot is the trigger finger to keep from throwing the shot off.

Great video! I broke a few arrows when I started shooting a "Stan". Wish I had got to enjoy this video before I started the transition. I hope to get my confidence high enough to hunt with it.

Dude I'm so glad I seen this video today because I have been shooting aweful trying to pull thru my shot, I even missed the whole target yesterday..I've been shooting 35 years started using a thumb release about 3 years ago and was doing the making a fist kinda method and it was working good but I always am trying to get better and I heard about pulling thru the shot but I wondered what I was doing wrong and I believe it's exactly what you said about I'm already at full draw and I don't have any give in the draw cycle and when I pull thru it's moving my bow..I was really down in the dumps about it I'm glad you posted this thank you...

This video helped me a LOT! Index releases just weren't cutting it for me and I recently switched to a thumb release. I started out shooting it with back tension and that was a lot better than the index release but I still felt it could be improved. I tried the method of pulling back with the middle and ring finger and after taking a little while to get used to it, my accuracy and consistency improved noticeably. My practice bow is a mid-priced bow set to a 40 lb. draw weight and it has a very mushy wall with a wide valley and that was causing me problems using back tension. I'm not sure why but as soon as I started using this new method, I'm able to hold the pin on target much steadier.

This looks fantastic, I have felt I had a hard time with this pulling and sometimes I don't get punchy but maybe do this slightly. Definitely going to try this out as my release method. Sometimes I do feel trying to pull additional to get it to fire brings me off target. Thanks for this video!

This was great advice. I have been shooting a thumb button using the back tension method, and although I grouped well, it was always in a different spot than when I shot my back tension release. It has been frustrating me for ages as I just couldn't work out what I was doing wrong.. T his video cleared that all up for me and now finally I have the same POI for both styles of release. Thanks again

I use a Carter Wise Choice 99% of the time for several years now. I have a Stan extinction II. Both releases have the same POI out to 60 yards which is as far as I shoot. I learned years ago to NOT MOVE my index finger on the trigger at all, but lock it in place and just pull through the shot with back muscles. Same way I activate the thumb or a Carter Total Control hinge. It doesn't matter which release anyone uses you can learn to pull through which to me results in much more consistent shots.

Good to know im not the only one having that problem..what i did is..i touched tips of my thumb to the tips of my index..i locked it and squeeze my middle and ring finger.. locking thumb and index preventing me to punch the trigger.

I have an elite 32 and Stan onnex, the elite is a ROCK hard back wall which I love, I was having fits like you’re describing with my front arm pulling. Now push and pull similar to how your describing and it scared the shit outa me the first few shots when it released, now I’m stacking arrows on top of eachother.

I just switched to a thumb release and noticed I have been shooting constantly left & low. Draw length and peep height look ok. I wasn’t sure what was going on until watching this. I am absolutely pulling thru and pulling my bow left. Thanks for this video! Can’t wait to shoot again and see if I can correct this

I to shoot a Stan Perfex. Shooting methods #1 works for me as I have a real small spongy back wall. The number of folks that actually "thumb punch" this style of release is staggering. From average joes to TV personalities...it drives me crazy. To each their own I guess. With great shooting form and the proper setup of your particular thumb release, these can be accurate as hell.

Very very few people can control the " command " shot technique. To be a great shot it would require the ability to NEVER get into the DRIVEBY & FIRE technique. DRIVEBY will/can/does lead to target panic so easily. Learn to do it right from feel at like 10 feet from a backstop. Hundreds of shots! Don't start trying hit a spot at 20 yards because you will worry about hitting the spot rather than learning to execute.

Every time I try to jump in a thumb button, I start out great. I never can get the “pulling through” just right, it never was consistent…panic would creep in. I’ve tried all the other methods you mentioned, the second one seemed to work the better for me, but that trigger needed to be perfect, then some times it wouldn’t go off, panic would creep in. I’d get frustrated to the point I’d go back to my HBC, and all is good, coming back later to try again.

Would you compensate the hard back wall of modern bows with a greater push feeling with your bow hand?
@gibsonlife573
@gibsonlife573 2 жыл бұрын
Is also the freak Jesse Broadwater Broadwater you should see how he does it he kind of lets it slide through his hand and then the shot breaks so come in with a kind of gripped tight then relax everything and this keep pulling and let your hand relax and that's your hand relaxes that the relaxes that the release pulls forward therefore breaking the shot

I use method 2 cause of a firm back wall and i hate it that every trainer on the club sais i just punch the trigger and that what i am doing is wrong then when i try to explain why i do what i do and they just say that it is not the way.. but all trainers i know shot old bows and i shot them myself and they have a verrrryyy soft back wall and i let them shoot with my bow and they can't shoot the way they do with there own bow and do the same as me and still keep saying i do it wrong even though i know that what i am doing still gives me a surprise shot in a way so i just stoped listening to them and keep shooting the way i do I do kinda get why they get on it because my trigger is hella light and i am a pretty fast shooter so i have my thumb only on the barrel for around a second witch i know is pretty fast

Awesome explanation and I agree about the solid backwall and throwing off left arrows. With your method, are you squeezing the thumb at same time as pinky and middle or keeping thumb stationary while rotating pinky and middle? Thanks again for an awesome instructional!

When I upgraded to a high quality lifetime warranty thumb release something clicked in my head. My goal was to have something to more repeatable in my shot process. The release I have is a 3 finger but has a shelf on top for your pinkie. I never understood the phrase "pulling through your shot" but I knew that I needed back tension. When I got to full draw & anchored in the right position with good posture this is how I executed. I simply connected pinching my shoulder blades together with the concept of putting pressure on the release with my pinkie. I do have the Wartorn release training tool. Beginning in January I work on my equipment but I don't shoot my bow. It's like shutting down a computer for the month. I found a rubber & rather short stab. that fits in the Wartorn case. I also used some mesh on the handle to mimic my Prime's. My backup release is the Stan Longneck Blackout Perfex which I use with the Wartorn. When I get ready @ the end of my shutdown I start using my 3 finger release with the Wartorn. I'm usually worn out from hunting by the end of December & this has helped me over the last several years. It gives me a fresh start & I don't develop bad habits from fatigue. My preseason scouting is finishing up 2day which means I'm switching over to spring shooting & climbing 🌳 again with my saddle. The Perfex release became obsolete after I bought the rubber piece to attach to the side of my release that holds it on the string. I believe it's made by Total Peep. Might sell a Flagship bow package with a nice sight & include the Perfex in on the deal. Already had new strings & cables on a bow I only shot for 1 year. Take care & thanks for the great shot execution video👍.

Go on the Stan website, click on support at the top, click on download cutouts and you can then print off a life size version of the release. Then compare to your Fang 3. I have had other companies medium size releases, the Perfex I use a large.

There are more pros for a thumb vs an index. Last year was my first year of archery. Wrist strap with gloves and some stupidity cost me a bear. I switched to a Stan Sx3 and I smoked a massive bear at 27yds.

To me, Kyle Douglas is doing what has also been done in the precision rifle world. This notion that a shot should be a "surprise" is kind of a shallow way to teach new ppl to simply squeeze and learn the appropriate amount of tention needed to release a trigger. If we are acquiring muscle memory for other aspects of our shooting, then we should also have it in your release imo.
@EDHBowman
@EDHBowman 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, you can stack the back, even with a heavier trigger tension, and fire, almost on command, but it’s still a surprise and leaves anticipatory movement behind… Joel Turner, Shot IQ, has several videos explaining the difference, and covers rifle/gun trigger vs. surprise archery shot.
